A web-based programming learning environment to support cognitive development

web-based programming has become a popular and vital issue in recent years. The rapid growth of various applications not only demonstrates the importance of web-based programming, but also reveals the difficulty of training relevant skills. The difficulty is owing to the lack of facilities such as online coding, debugging and peer help to assist the students in promoting their cognitive development in web-based programming. To cope with these problems, in this paper. a web-based programming assisted system, "WPAS". is proposed, which is able to support five programming activities with various difficulty levels of cognition based on Bloom's cognitive taxonomy. WPAS provides online coding, debugging and annotation tools to conduct the training and peer assessment for web-based programming. Experimental results of 47 undergraduate students show that the innovative approach is helpful to the students in improving their cognitive development in web-based programming. In addition, according to the results of the questionnaire, most of the participants perceived the ease of use and usefulness of the proposed system. Therefore, this study suggests that teachers could design web-based programming activities supported by the WPAS system to improve students' cognitive development in web-based programming. Robots intrigue many people. Moreover, their development is quite complex and can involve different subjects of electrical engineering, as well as computer science. Therefore, robots are a very suitable basis to teach students different subjects of these disciplines. In this paper, we present the design of an educational robot platform. The platform, called Robonova, was used for practical sessions in undergraduate courses. The redesign was motivated by a lack of support for current technologies, such as the internet of things and cyber-physical systems. Moreover, the manufacturer no longer maintained it. To enable further usage we developed an up-to-date educational system based on the old robot platform. The redesign includes the control system, which is connected to all sensors and actuators, and a development environment, that is platform independent and includes predefined libraries. In first evaluations with students, the responses were very positive and the new platform enables higher connectivity, as well as solving tasks that are more complex.

MakeCode and CODAL: Intuitive and efficient embedded systems programming for education

Historically, embedded systems development has been a specialist skill, requiring knowledge of low-level programming languages, complex compilation toolchains, and specialist hardware, firmware, device drivers and applications. However, it has now become commonplace for a broader range of non-specialists to engage in the making (design and development) of embedded systems - including educators to motivate and excite their students in the classroom. This diversity brings its own set of unique requirements, and the complexities of existing embedded systems development platforms introduce insurmountable barriers to entry. In this paper we present the motivation, requirements, implementation, and evaluation of a new programming platform that enables novice users to create effective and efficient software for embedded systems. The platform has two major components: (1) Microsoft MakeCode (***), a web app that encapsulates an accessible IDE for microcontrollers;and (2) CODAL, an efficient component-oriented C++ runtime for microcontrollers. We show how MakeCode and CODAL combine to provide an accessible, cross-platform, installation-free, high level programming experience for embedded devices without sacrificing performance and efficiency.

Decision support for lean practitioners: A web-based adaptive assessment approach

A web-based decision support tool using adaptive assessment approach is developed in this research as a guiding tool throughout the journey to lean. In the past several decades, pioneers of lean manufacturing have developed numerous useful tools and techniques to realize the waste-elimination concept. With the abundant lean tools, applying the right tools at the right time on the right spot relies on extensive knowledge and experiences. Yet, such an expertise is not always accessible or affordable. This paper presents an adaptive lean assessment approach that provides an effective way to guide the lean implementation process. Using the web-based program, an assessment model is generated adaptively for each user to evaluate the Current status of the system, pinpoint the urgent targets for improvement, and identify the appropriate tools and techniques for developing action plans. With the decision support information, lean concepts can be implemented more systematically and efficiently. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper presents the implementation of a time series forecasting algorithm, jsEvRBF, that uses genetic algorithm and neural nets in a way that can be run in must modern web browsers. Using browsers to run forecasting algorithms is a challenge, since language support and performance varies across implementations of the JavaScript virtual machine and vendor. However, their use will provide a boost in the number of platforms available for scientists. jsEvRBF is written in JavaScript, so that it can be easily delivered to and executed by any device containing a web-browser just accessing an URL. The experiments show the results yielded by the algorithm over a data set related to currencies exchange. Best results achieved can be effectively compared against previous results in literature, though robustness of the new algorithm has to be improved.

As the modern society utilizes various devices based on the Information, Communication Technology (ICT), the importance of the computer program has been increased. As the needs of the education of engineering increases, many researchers studied the pedagogy of the engineering education and the learning contents development. In general, the education of the programming language accompanies with the syntax learning and logic developments. The block-based programming language helps to build the logic of the students. Therefore, Block-based programming languages are used in the entry course to the engineering departments. However, the block-based learning languages are limited to develop conventional applications. The application of the block-based programming language requires the particular middleware to execute, and usually, the application cannot utilize the functionalities of the hardware. Therefore, students should learn the high-level programming language regardless of the block-based programming language to develop the ICT services. Unlike other pedagogy, this paper introduces the education contents and programming environment with high-level programming. Notably, this paper proposes the hybrid approaches to help students to build their programming logic and programming syntax.

A change currently unfolding is the move from desktop computing as we know it, where applications run on a person's computer, to network computing. The idea is to distribute an application across a network of computers, primarily the Internet. Whereas people in 2005 might have used Microsoft Word for their word-processing needs, people today might use Google Docs. This paper details a project, started in 2007, to enable scientific programming through an environment based in an Internet browser. Scientific programming is an integral part of math, science and engineering. This paper glows how the Calq system can be used for scientific programming, and evaluates how well it works. Testing revealed something unexpected. Google Chrome outperformed other browsers, taking only a fraction of the time to perform a complex task in Calq.

Time series forecasting using evolutionary neural nets implemented in a volunteer computing system

jsEvRBF is a time-series forecasting method based on genetic algorithm and neural nets. Written in JavaScript language, can be executed in most web browsers. Consequently, everybody can participate in the experiments, and scientists can take advantage of nowadays available browsers and devices as computation environments. This is also a great challenge as the language support and performance varies from one browser to another. In this paper, jsEvRBF has been tested in a volunteer computing experiment, and also in a single-browser one. Both experiments are related to forecasting currencies exchange, and the results show the viability of the proposal.
