Evaluating the impact of a web-based resource on student learning

This paper reports on an experiment of using a publisher provided web-based resource to make available a series of optional practice quizzes and other supplementary material to all students taking a first year introductory microeconomics module. The empirical analysis evaluates the impact these supplementary resources had on student learning. First, we investigate which students decided to make use of the resources. Then, we analyse the impact this decision has on their subsequent performance in the examination at the end of the module. The results show that, even after taking into account the possibility of self-selection bias, using the web-based resource had a significant positive effect on student learning. PainNetworks: A web-based resource for the visualisation of pain-related genes in the context of their network associations

Hundreds of genes are proposed to contribute to nociception and pain perception. Historically, most studies of pain-related genes have examined them in isolation or alongside a handful of other genes. More recently the use of systems biology techniques has enabled us to study genes in the context of the biological pathways and networks in which they operate. Here we describe a web-based resource, available at http://***. It integrates interaction data from various public databases with information on known pain genes taken from several sources (eg, The Pain Genes Database) and allows the user to examine a gene (or set of genes) of interest alongside known interaction partners. This information is displayed by the resource in the form of a network. The user can enrich these networks by using data from pain-focused gene expression studies to highlight genes that change expression in a given experiment or pairs of genes showing correlated expression patterns across different experiments. Genes in the networks are annotated in several ways including biological function and drug binding. The web site can be used to find out more about a gene of interest by looking at the function of its interaction partners. It can also be used to interpret the results of a functional genomics experiment by revealing putative novel pain-related genes that have similar expression patterns to known pain-related genes and by ranking genes according to their network connections with known pain genes. A web-based knowledge translation resource for families and service providers (the "f-words" in childhood disability knowledge hub): Developmental and pilot evaluation study

Background: The "F-words in Childhood Disability" (Function, Family, Fitness, Fun, Friends, and Future) are an adaptation and an attempt to operationalize the World Health Organization's (2001) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Since the paper was published (November 2011), the "F-words" have attracted global attention (>12,000 downloads, January 2018). Internationally, people have adopted the "F-words" ideas, and many families and service providers have expressed a need for more information, tools, and resources on the "F-words". Objective: This paper reports on the development and pilot evaluation of a web-based knowledge translation (KT) resource, the "F-words" Knowledge Hub that was created to inform people about the "F-words" and to provide action-oriented tools to support the use of the "F-words" in practice. Methods: An integrated research team of families and researchers at CanChild Centre for Childhood Disability Research collaborated to develop, implement, and evaluate the Knowledge Hub. A pilot study design was chosen to assess the usability and utility of the web-based hub before implementing a larger evaluation study. Data were collected using a brief anonymous web-based survey that included both closed-ended and open-ended questions, with the closed-ended responses being based on a five-point Likert-type scale. We used descriptive statistics and a summary of key themes to report findings. Results: From August to November 2017, the Knowledge Hub received >6,800 unique visitors. In 1 month (November 2017), 87 people completed the survey, of whom 63 completed the full survey and 24 completed 1 or 2 sections. The respondents included 42 clinicians and 30 family members or individuals with a disability. The majority of people visited the Knowledge Hub 1-5 times (n=63) and spent up to 45 minutes exploring (n=61) before providing feedback. The environment inside biological cells is densely populated by macromolecules and other cellular components. The crowding has a significant impact on folding and stability of macromolecules, and on kinetics of molecular interactions. Computational approaches to cell modeling, such as molecular dynamics, provide details of macromolecular behavior in concentrated solutions. However, such simulations are either slow, when carried out at atomic resolution, or significantly coarse-grained. Protein docking has been widely used for predicting structures of protein complexes. Systematic docking approaches, such as those based on Fast Fourier Transform (FFT), map the entire intermolecular energy landscape by determining the position and depth of the energy minima. The GRAMMCell web server implements docking-based approach for simulating cell crowded environment by sampling the intermolecular energy landscape generated by GRAMM (Global RAnge Molecular Matching). GRAMM systematically maps the landscape by a spectrum of docking poses corresponding to stable (deep energy minima) and transient (shallow minima) protein interactions. The sampling of these energy landscapes of a large system of proteins is performed in GRAMMCell using highly optimized Markov Chain Monte Carlo protocol. The procedure allows simulation of extra-long trajectories of large, crowded protein systems with atomic resolution accuracy. GRAMMCell is available at https://***. © 2025 The Author(s)

Knowledge to Practice in Developmental Coordination Disorder: Utility of an Evidence-based Online Module for Physical Therapists

Aims: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a chronic condition with potential negative health consequences. Therapists working with children with DCD need access to tailored, synthesized, evidence-based information;however a knowledge-to-practice gap exists. The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the utility of an evidence-based online DCD module tailored to physical therapists' (PTs) needs. Methods: Guided by the Knowledge to Action framework, we interviewed PTs working with children with DCD (n = 9) to identify their information needs. Their recommendations, along with synthesized DCD research evidence, informed module development. These PTs as well as others (n = 50) evaluated the module's usefulness. Results: The module incorporated important content areas including: (1) identification;(2) planning interventions and goals;(3) evidence-based practice;(4) management;and (5) resources. Case scenarios, clinical applications, interactive media, links to resources, and interactive learning opportunities were also embedded. PTs perceived the module to be comprehensive and useful and provided feedback to improve module navigation. Conclusions: Involving end-users throughout the development and evaluation of an online PT DCD module contributed to its relevance, applicability, and utility. It will be important to evaluate whether use of this module improves the quality of services provided by PTs.

Aims: To evaluate the impact of an evidence-based online module on Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) on self-reported physical therapist (PT) knowledge, skills, and practice. Methods: Fifty PTs completed a questionnaire before and after the completion of the online module, with 41 PTs completing the same questionnaire 2 months later. The questionnaires included items rated using a 7-point Likert Scale and short open-ended questions. Results: There was a significant effect of Time for 17 out of 18 items on self-reported knowledge, and all 19 items for self-reported skills. Post-hoc analyses indicated that mean scores at Time 2 and Time 3 were higher than the mean scores at Time 1. Forty-six (92%) participants reported an increase in their confidence to provide evidence-based services. Forty-three (86%) participants indicated their intentions to modify their evaluative practices (e.g., involving children in goal setting) and their management of DCD (e.g., using the best practice principles, providing resources to families). At the 2-month follow-up, 19 (46%) participants had returned to the module to review information (e.g., video, resources) or to download handouts. Conclusions: The online DCD module appears to be an effective knowledge translation strategy to increase PTs' self-reported knowledge and skills, and to support evidence-informed practice.

The NITAG resource Centre (NRC): One-stop shop towards a collaborative platform

It has long been acknowledged that there is little interaction between National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) in the North and even less between those in the North and those in the South. Three international meetings of NITAGs recommended establishing an international network of NITAGs centred on a core functional structure and platform to facilitate future exchanges. The SIVAC Initiative (as part of a WHO Collaborating Center) followed-up with this recommendation, and launched an interactive platform involving all NITAGs worldwide in an active network and open collaboration: the NITAG resource Center (NRC), accessible at http://***. The NRC offers NITAG members and secretariats a centralized access to NITAG recommendations from around the world, systematic reviews, scientific publications, technical reports, updates from partners, and upcoming immunization events. A dedicated network manager will proactively update all contents through a strong network of regional and national focal points. The NRC is a first step towards a more fruitful and global collaboration between NITAGs. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Demographic and Psychosocial Characteristics Associated With Use of a Prostate Cancer Survivorship website: Implications From a Multisite Randomized Controlled Trial

Background: Many prostate cancer (PC) survivors experience disease and treatment-related symptomatology in both the physical and psychosocial domains Although the benefits and barriers to using web-based resources for cancer patients are well-documented, less research has focused on the personal characteristics important for efficient tailoring and targeting of information that are associated with usage. Objective: We used the Cognitive-Social Health Information Processing (C-SHIP) framework to guide our exploration of personal characteristics associated with use of PROGRESS, an informational PC survivorship website that addresses physical, emotional, interpersonal, and practical concerns relevant for PC survivors. Methods: PC survivors (N=217) were randomized to the intervention arm (PROGRESS) of a randomized controlled trial. Of those randomized to the intervention arm, 84 used PROGRESS, and 133 did not use PROGRESS. Multivariable analyses evaluated demographic and psychosocial characteristics (eg, style of coping, health literacy, self-efficacy, affective states of depression, anxiety, and fatigue) associated with website use. Results: A larger proportion of non-Hispanic White (68/160, 42.5%), compared with non-Hispanic Black (9/40, 23%), participants used PROGRESS (P<.001). Further, PROGRESS users were older in age (P<.001), had a monitoring style of coping (P=.01), and were less depressed (P=.004), anxious (P=.02), and fatigued (P<.001) than nonusers. Education, income, health literacy, blunting style of coping, self-efficacy, and treatment type (radiation therapy or surgery) were not significantly related to use. On multivariable analyses, race (OR 0.28, P<.001), age (OR 1.05, P<.001), monitoring style of coping (OR 1.27, P=.02), and overall mood (OR 0.98, P<.001) remained significant. FungiDB (https://***) serves as a valuable online resource that seamlessly integrates genomic and related large-scale data for a wide range of fungal and oomycete species. As an integral part of the VEuPathDB Bioinformatics resource Center (https://***), FungiDB continually integrates both published and unpublished data addressing various aspects of fungal biology. Established in early 2011, the database has evolved to support 674 datasets. The datasets include over 300 genomes spanning various taxa (e.g. Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Blastocladiomycota, Chytridiomycota, Mucoromycota, as well as Albuginales, Peronosporales, Pythiales, and Saprolegniales). In addition to genomic assemblies and annotation, over 300 extra datasets encompassing diverse information, such as expression and variation data, are also available. The resource also provides an intuitive web-based interface, facilitating comprehensive approaches to data mining and visualization. Users can test their hypotheses and navigate through omics-scale datasets using a built-in search strategy system. Moreover, FungiDB offers capabilities for private data analysis via the integrated VEuPathDB Galaxy platform. FungiDB also permits genome improvements by capturing expert knowledge through the User Comments system and the Apollo genome annotation editor for structural and functional gene curation. FungiDB facilitates data exploration and analysis and contributes to advancing research efforts by capturing expert knowledge for fungal and oomycete species.
