This paper explores the engineering contributions of a web-based simulator of fruit fly, particularly with regards to software and system infrastructure. This simulation system is the result of a multidisciplinary effort in the areas of ecological simulation modelling and software/systems engineering, in order to provide tools to support decision making in biosecurity. We report on the following interesting software and system engineering aspects: catering for a variety of users, scalability issues, response time requirements, a three-tiered development environment, web-suitable architecture, a flexible data interchange format, a range of cooperating underlying temporal-spatial models, and the need for evaluation in for non-functional aspects such as scalability in execution time and memory requirements. This paper describes some particularities of an e-learning system that is being developed to simulate conversational dialogue in the area of Medicine, that enables the integration of highly heterogeneous sources of information into a coherent knowledge base, either from the tutor's point of view or the development of the discipline in itself, i.e. the system's content is created automatically by the physicians as their daily work goes on. This will encourage Students to articulate lengthier answers that exhibit deep reasoning, rather than to deliver straight tips of shallow knowledge. The goal is to take advantage of the normal functioning of health care units to build on the fly a knowledge base of cases and data for teaching and research purposes.

The direction that web-based simulation modelling is taking is determined and deliberated. Environments and languages for web-based simulation are reviewed, particularly Java-based approaches. web-based applications are discussed, After proposing a summary of the review, ways of working that will have an unpredictable effect on the future of simulation modelling are proposed. web-based simulation is a collective term used for various applications and with different meanings: simulation as hypermedia, simulation research methodology, web-based access to simulation programs, distributed modeling and simulation, and simulation of the WWW (E. Page, http://***/news/the-edge/august-98/***, 1998). Here, the term web-based simulation relates to the first three areas, where we see great potential in bringing simulation technology to the web: exciting applications include the development of new MIME types for technical documents or the realization of standardized service building blocks, which make agile workflow modeling possible in the technical departments of many companies. The contributions of this paper are as follows. The different realization alternatives for web-based simulation services are explained and discussed with respect to their advantages and disadvantages. Moreover, the prototypic implementation of a web service is presented, which allows for the analysis and execution of technical models described in the well-known Modelica modeling language. While existing simulators use proprietary or non-interactive communication concepts for web access, our service is built on the proposed W3C web interface stack. In particular, it integrates the professional simulation engine YANOS, wich is employed among others in the simulation software FluidSIM of FESTO. Our web service enables the electronic mailing of technical documents, which may contain model descriptions that can be simulated in the web browser of the recipient. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The area of web-based simulation (the integration of the web with the field of simulation) (WBS) has grown since the mid-1990s. The web itself has evolved rapidly, and current web-related research areas include web 2.0, service-oriented architectures and the Semantic web. This paper gives a review of the area of WBS, exploring the advantages and disadvantages of WBS over classical simulation systems, a classification of different sub- and related-areas of WBS, an exploration of technologies that enable WBS, and the evolution of the web in terms of its relationship to WBS. web-based simulation can be a powerful tool in education and training. The nature of simulation-based learning combined with the availability of the web make learning supported by web-based simulation a powerful strategy. In simulation-based learning, learners can experience environments that would be too costly, time-consuming, complex or dangerous to provide through other means. This article discusses some basic properties of learning using web-based simulation with the focus on different types of learning goals (instructional goals) and on proper instructional strategies (pedagogical strategies) for web-based simulation. We exemplify the classifications discussed with three web-based systems, developed by the authors, that represent different types of web-based simulation. Chernobyl - a nuclear power plant simulation. C(3)Fire - a micro-world supporting command and control training. Research and commercial opportunities in web-based simulation

In a few short years, web-based simulation has exhibited explosive growth in the simulation research community. This paper which grew out of a panel discussion at the 2000 web-SIM Conference, briefly reviews the development of this research area and considers future opportunities, both on the research and commercial sides. On the research side, the area is maturing , but still quite active. Efforts to expanded web-based simulation to include new capabilities beyond those found in conventional simulation technology or provide interoperation with other information processing technology are particularly promising. On the commercial side, a critical mass of research knowledge is now available. However, some catalyst is needed to produce any substantial movement of simulation vendors toward web-based simulation. This could happen quickly under a couple of scenarios: A small simulation vendor focused on web-based simulation could begin to claim significant market share. Alternatively, the development of a "killer-app" to demonstrate a clear advantage to web-based simulation could make this shift happen very quickly. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The movement of contaminants through the soil matrix is primarily a liquid phase process in which the chemical partitions between sorbed and dissolved phases. These phenomena have been modeled extensively and several computer models were developed. The use of those computer programs requires installation of the software in the users machine. Usually, post-processing of the numerical output provided by the software is required. In this paper, a web-based simulation environment for retention and transport of dissolved organic and inorganic compounds in soils is presented. The system was developed using Java and is based on the Multi-reaction Transport Model of heavy metals in soil. The mathematical and numerical formulation of the model is briefly sketched. The core computing components of the simulation environment were written in C or FORTRAN for their computational efficiency. The emerging Java Native Interface (JNI) technique and the Swing interface were used to design a user-friendly simulator. Java security problems (due to the use of applets calling native libraries) are discussed and a solution to avoid security restrictions is provided. The simulation system provides interactive user control and real time visualization through standard web browsers. The Java-based simulation code was used to analyze a hypothetical soil contamination problem. The almost instantaneous visualization of results provided by the Java-based interface resulted in efficient and easy analyses. Although a performance comparison was not in mind, the evaluation of the same scenario using the original FORTRAN code took three times as much total time (program run, evaluation of results and post-processing) as that using the Java simulation system. Investigating the application of web-based simulation principles within the architecture for a next-generation computer generated forces model

With a heavy emphasis on distribution and reuse, web-based simulation portends a dramatic shift in the application of simulation as a problem-solving technique and decision-support tool. Next-generation simulation systems of all kinds should be evaluated and constructed with an appreciation of the potential paradigm shift that web-based simulation represents. Fiscal constraints indicate that next-generation computer generated forces (CGF) models will be used to support a wide range of missions, unifying - and replacing - a variety of CGF systems currently in existence. We describe the evolution of web-based simulation and derive a collection of modeling principles that characterize our vision of the web-based simulation future. We examine these principles in terms of their implications for next-generation CGF systems. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Objective: The objective of this article was to review the literature on utilisation and place of web-based simulation within nursing education. web-based simulation combines electronic multimedia options with a central video or virtual world to produce interactive learning activities mediated by the learner. Design: An integrative review. Data sources: A search was conducted of healthcare databases between 2000 and 2014 and of Internet sources for hosted simulation programs in nursing. Eighteen primary programs were identified for inclusion. Review methods: A strategy for integrative review was adopted in which studies were identified, filtered, classified, analysed and compared. Results and discussion: Of 18 programs, two game-based programs were identified which represented a 'virtual world' in which students could simultaneously or individually immerse themselves in a character role-play. However, most programs (n = 10) taught an aspect of procedural patient care using multimedia (e.g. video, audio, graphics, quiz, text, memo). Time-limited sequences, feedback and reflective activities were often incorporated. Other studies (n = 8) taught interpersonal communication skills or technical skills for equipment use. Descriptive study outcomes indicated ease of program use, strong satisfaction with learning and appreciation of program accessibility. Additionally, four studies reported significant improvements in knowledge post-intervention. Conclusion: web-based simulation is highly acceptable to students and appears to provide learning benefits that align with other simulation approaches and it augments face-to-face teaching. web-based simulation is likely to have a major place in nursing curricula in the next decade, yet further research is necessary to objectively evaluate learner outcomes and to justify its use.
