This paper discusses the use of the weightedrecursiveleastsquares (wRLS) algorithm in the identification of a set of evolving Fuzzy Models (FMs) that characterize the nonlinear finger dynamics of the human hand in the framework of myoelectric (ME)-based control of a prosthetic hand. FM inputs are ME signals obtained from eight ME sensors, and different numbers of additional model inputs obtained from past inputs and/or outputs are considered. The FM outputs are the finger angles, i.e., the midcarpal joint angles. Evolving FMs for two out of five fingers are derived. Model performance for wRLS versus recursiveleastsquares (RLS) algorithm tested against experimental data is outlined and compared.

Optimization of the combustion control process in a tangentially fired pulverized coal boiler, to achieve uniform temperature distribution, is discussed in the paper. This issue is even more critical in those thermal power plants which are not equipped with modern systems for combustion enhancement, such as low NOx burners. Research has shown that the temperature distribution inside the boiler of such power plant can be controlled by adjusting firing, through coal redistribution among the mills. Furthermore, disturbed flame symmetry (i.e. non-uniform temperature distribution in the boiler) is reflected in a large difference between the output temperatures measured on the left and right sides of the boiler. Given the non-stationary conditions typical of thermal power plant boilers, an adaptive control approach is proposed, based on PI controllers which are very popular in industry and widely accepted. Self-tuning of the PI controllers is based on dynamic model parameters derived applying the weightedrecursiveleastsquares (WRLS) method to real data recorded at Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant in Serbia, whose nominal power is 650 MW. The same model was later used to test the proposed control approach.

Many chemical processes are inherently nonlinear. A single linear model is ineffective for these processes. Several local linear models may be developed for different operating conditions. A combination of these local models, through a fuzzy logic representation, results in an overall model for a wider operation range. In this paper, on-line improvements and a fuzzy multimodel have been proposed for predictive control implementation. Firstly, assuming that the premises of the fuzzy rules keep their original structures, the linear parameters in the rule consequents are on-line updated by a weighted recursive least squares algorithm at each sample interval. Secondly, a batch learning algorithm is proposed to tune the fuzzy rule premises using a competitive learning algorithm. The effectiveness of the proposed improvements is demonstrated with experimental applications to the filling velocity control of thermoplastic injection molding.
