In wireless networks packets are lost because of queue congestion during high traffic, collisions, hidden nodes, and link failures. The problem of dropped packets becomes more critical in real-time applications, such as video conferences and remote controls. This paper presents a new wireless network coding (WNC) scheme and router detection packet loss (RDPL) algorithm for retrieving packets that are lost in a wireless network. In the WNC scheme, a router combines (encodes) packets originating from the same or different sources and forwards the packets to another router. In the RDPL algorithm, the coding router sends a negative acknowledge to the upper layer routers whenever it receives only one packet or two identical packets. The proposed WNC-RDPL method increases the transmission capacity and packet delivery ratio (PDR). The architecture has been evaluated for one, two, three, and four link failures. The simulation results show that the WNC-RDPL approach obtain 100% PDR gains compared with well-known linear network coding schemes.

In this paper, we focus on the design of a reliable communication scheme for generic 5-node wireless butterfly networks (WBN). Since the WBN represents a natural extension of the basic two-way relay communication channel, we follow the paradigm of wireless Physical Layer network coding and we show that the design of novel adaptive constellations is desirable to exploit the promising performance of wireless network coding in WBN. We introduce a systematic constellation design algorithm, and we show that the proposed constellations are capable of outperforming conventional point-to-point modulations in WBN over the whole range of channel signal to noise ratios. To further support the applicability of the proposed constellations in a practical system, we integrate a simple binary channel coding scheme, providing a robust adaptivemodulation and coding scheme for relaying in symmetric WBNs with arbitrary channel conditions.

This paper reports an outdoor experiment to optimize the timeout of wireless network coding (WNC) and frame aggregation (FA), which are implemented to carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA)-based wireless two-hop relay prototype. The system throughput is improved. In the prototype, FA is implemented at the terminal nodes. Timeout function for WNC is available at the relay node and that for FA is available at the terminal nodes. Our outdoor experiment shows that optimizing the timeout values of WNC and FA can improve system throughput by 2.04-fold compared to the conventional relay without WNC or FA. Using wireless network coding to Replace a Wired With wireless Backhaul

Cellular networks are evolving toward dense deployment of small cells, which requires flexible and efficient backhauling solutions. A viable solution that reuses the same spectrum is wireless backhaul where the small base station acts as a relay. In this letter, we consider a reference system that uses wired backhaul, and each mobile station in the small cell has its uplink and downlink rates defined. The central question is: if we remove the wired backhaul, how much extra power should the wireless backhaul use in order to support the same uplink/downlink rates? We introduce the idea of wireless-emulated wire, based on two-way relaying and network coding. This setup leads to a new type of broadcast problem, with decoding conditions that are specific to the requirement for equivalence to the wired backhaul. We formulate and solve the associated optimization problems. The proposed approach is a convincing argument that wireless backhauling solutions should be designed and optimized for two-way communication.

The Uplink of Distributed MIMO: wireless network coding versus Coordinated Multipoint

In this paper, we propose an advanced transmission protocol for the next generation wireless access network using wireless network coding (WNC). As an alternative to conventional cooperative multipoint (CoMP) as described in LTE-A, WNC enables access point cooperation, combining the flows using network coding functions, instead of sending multiple separate information flows across the backhaul network. WNC in principle enables this cooperation with less backhaul load than CoMP transmission, while providing superior performance compared with CoMP in terms of outage probability.

We study a one-hop broadcast channel with two receivers. The receivers have side information obtained by overhearing wireless channels. The relay takes control decisions by coding transmissions based on its knowledge of side information in the receivers. We consider two control mechanisms. In the ACK system, the relay has definite knowledge of side information announced via overhearing reports. In the NACK system, the relay has statistical knowledge of side information and receives feedback after every decoding failure. Our contribution is as follows. We provide the minimal evacuation times for the two systems and obtain analytical expressions of the throughput region for the ACK and the code-constrained region for the NACK system. When the transmission rates are the same (r(1) = r(2)) or when the receiver with the highest transmission rate has perfect side information (p(f) = 1), we show that the two regions are equal. We then provide simple joint xor coding and scheduling policies that achieve those regions and, thus, are throughput optimal. Subsequently, we evaluate the report overhead performance for both mechanisms and reflect on the involved tradeoff with throughput. Ultimately, we demonstrate by simulations that the proposed throughput optimal policies can be appropriately enhanced to have good delay properties, particularly for protocols that utilize sequenced packet delivery.

During data exchange in the Point-to-Point wireless topology, in case where end nodes aren’t accessible directly, a relay is deployed. However, the basic approach to relays – Store-andForward – isn’t the way to reach the maximum throughput. network coding operation is performed by combining data words (packets) travelling through the network in opposite directions into one packet. End nodes, with knowledge of the data sent, can decode received packet. Packet exchange is then finished in shorter time which results in an increase of network throughput. There are more methods of network coding which differ from each other in the time requirements or the ability to work in a noisy channel. In this paper they will be described and compared.

Cooperative Diverse Opportunistic network coding for wireless networks

Opportunistic network coding (ONC) increases communication networks' throughput by XORing two or more packets together. However, it has shown that ONC deteriorates in terms of bit error rate (BER) and throughput when deployed in noisy wireless networks. Therefore, we propose a mechanism that combines ONC, diversity coding, and cooperation to mitigate the shortcomings of ONC. Additionally, to reduce delay and error propagation at relay nodes, we limit the maximum number of packets that can be network-coded together to three and only encode packets received directly by relay nodes. Moreover, we study the effect of link outages/mobility and show how to mitigate at least one link failure. Finally, we show that our system alleviates the issues previously mentioned and provides better performance to direct transmission and ONC when implemented in noisy networks using simulations.

network coding provides a powerful mechanism for improving performance of wireless networks. In this paper, we present an analytical approach for end-to-end delay analysis in wireless networks that employs inter-session network coding. Prior work on performance analysis in wireless network coding mainly focuses on the throughput of the overall network. Our approach aims to analyze the delay of each flow in the network. The theoretical basis of our approach is network calculus. In order to use network calculus to analyze the performance of traffic flows in the network, we have to address three specific problems: identifying traffic flows, characterizing broadcast links, and measuring coding opportunities. We propose solutions for these problems and discuss the practical issues when applying the approach in practice. We make three main contributions. First, we obtain theoretical formulations for computing the queueing delay bounds of traffic flows in wireless networks with network coding. Second, with the formulations, we figure out the factors that affect the queueing delay of a flow and find that first-in first-out scheduling cannot fully exploit the benefit of network coding. Third, in order to exploit our findings, we introduce a new scheduling scheme that can improve the performance of current practical wireless network coding. network coding (NC), in principle, is a Layer-3 innovation that improves network throughput in wired networks for multicast/broadcast scenarios. Due to the fundamental differences between wired and wireless networks, extending NC to wireless networks generates several new and significant practical challenges. Two-way information exchange (both symmetric and asymmetric) between a pair of 802.11 sources/sinks using an intermediate relay node is a canonical scenario for evaluating the effectiveness of wireless network coding (WNC) in a practical setting. Our primary objective in this work is to suggest pragmatic and novel modifications at the MAC and PHY layers of the 802.11 protocol stack on a Software Radio (SORA) platform to support WNC and obtain achievable throughput estimates via lab-scale experiments. Our results show that network coding (at the MAC or PHY layer) increases system throughput-typically by 20-30%.
