However, the application of network coding may not always improve the network performance. In this paper(1), we provide a comprehensive analytical study, which helps in assessing when network coding is preferable to a traditional store-and-forward approach. Interestingly, our study reveals that in many topological scenarios, network coding can in fact hurt the throughput performance;in such scenarios, applying the store-and-forward approach leads to higher network throughput. We validate our analytical findings via extensive testbed experiments, and we extract guidelines on when network coding should be applied instead of store-and-forward.

We propose a simple yet effective wireless network coding and decoding technique for a multiple unicast network. It utilizes spatial diversity through cooperation between nodes which carry out distributed encoding operations dictated by generator matrices of linear block codes. In order to exemplify the technique, we make use of greedy codes over the binary field and show that the arbitrary diversity orders can be flexibly assigned to nodes. Furthermore, we present the optimal detection rule for the given model that accounts for intermediate node errors and suggest a low-complexity network decoder using the sum-product (SP) algorithm. The proposed SP detector exhibits near optimal performance. We also show asymptotic superiority of network coding over a method that utilizes the wireless channel in a repetitive manner without network coding (NC) and give related rate-diversity trade-off curves. Finally, we extend the given encoding method through selective encoding in order to obtain extra coding gains.

network coding has been proposed as a technique that can potentially increase the transport capacity of a wireless network via mixing data packets at intermediate routers. However, most previous studies either assume a fixed transmission rate or do not consider the impact of using diverse rates on the network coding gain. Since in many cases, network coding implicitly relies on overhearing, the choice of the transmission rate has a big impact on the achievable gains. The use of higher rates works in favor of increasing the native throughput. However, it may in many cases work against effective overhearing. In other words, there is a tension between the achievable network coding gain and the inherent rate gain possible on a link. In this paper, our goal is to drive the network toward achieving the best tradeoff between these two contradictory effects. We design a distributed framework that: 1) facilitates the choice of the best rate on each link while considering the need for overhearing;and 2) dictates the choice of which decoding recipient will acknowledge the reception of an encoded packet. We demonstrate that both of these features contribute significantly toward gains in throughput. We extensively simulate our framework in a variety of topological settings. We also fully implement it on real hardware and demonstrate its applicability and performance gains via proof-of-concept experiments on our wireless testbed. We show that our framework yields throughput gains of up to 390% as compared to what is achieved in a rate-unaware network coding framework.

This paper deals with distributed decision map selection of individual relay wireless network coding (WNC) (a.k.a physical layer network coding (PLNC)) operation in a multi-source network scenario. Communication network consists of several independent selfish source nodes, one layer of relay nodes (named a cloud) and a set of destinations. Relays support the source to destination communication. Connectivity among the network nodes is random and is not globally known. For this network topology the paper provides a distributed game-theory based adaptive protocol. From feedback information each relay is able to adapt its WNC operation so as to optimize its utility while decodability of WNC at each destination is guaranteed. In this paper we present our initial effort together with illustrative examples of relay utility functions. WNC introduces novel utility functions that can be far different from the NC ones, e. g. minimal hierarchical constellation distance. Presented protocol is convenient for any Decode & Forward WNC operation for wireless as well as for wired networks.

Today, relaying at routers is secure because we encrypt the confidential messages. We allow routers to have full access to contents of received packets and rest assured that the confidential contents cannot be decrypted, with the underlying assumption that adversaries in the network including the routers are computationally bounded. Nonetheless, as technology develops, much higher computational capability may be achieved. The network is not secure any more when routers or eavesdroppers at routers have infinite computational power. Indeed, there are non-computational security based schemes against external eavesdroppers, which make the eavesdroppers fail in receiving correct data, but unfortunately they cannot be used for security at routers, because we need to achieve not only security but also error-free data forwarding at routers, which is much more challenging. This paper proposes secure wireless network coding to achieve physical-layer security at routers by taking advantages of interference and noise, which are usually considered harmful. We exploit the interference to design network coding protocols to achieve not only security, but also error-free data forwarding at a high rate. Noise, which leads to the randomness of wireless channels, also contributes to providing security in our scheme. With the help of both interference and noise, wireless network coding can be a crucial approach to achieve security at routers, which traditional store-and-forward routing cannot achieve.

In this paper, we propose a wireless network coding diversity technique based on hybrid amplify-and-forward/decode-and-forward relay method employing adaptive power control for two-hop wireless networks in order to improve relay node position flexibility. wireless network coding diversity based on hybrid relay method selects either modulation symbol level wireless network coding diversity or bit sequence level wireless network coding diversity as its wireless network coding diversity scheme according to the cyclic redundancy check result at the relay node. Moreover, the adaptive power control scheme proposed here controls the relay node's transmit power according to its position. Computer simulations verify that wireless network coding diversity based on hybrid relay method employing the adaptive power control scheme can expand the area wherein the relay node can be located while satisfying the required communication quality by 4.56 times compared to the conventional wireless network coding diversity scheme. Therefore, we confirm that our proposed scheme can increase relay node position flexibility.

A Time Quanta Bit coding method

This paper discusses a new method of coding and/or decoding data for wireless transmission, particularly for radio transmitted data, and examines the equipment needed for the actual implementation of the technique. The authors describe in detail the principle of the proposed approach, including possible benefits of its implementation in wireless sensor networks, and compare the given concept with the most widely used Manchester coding method. When implemented, the Time Quanta Bit coding method increases the communication range and shortens the necessary transmission time, which, in the case of battery-operated devices as a typical representative of the wireless sensor node, allows for longer operation time. The described technique can significantly improve the quality of wireless communication in small wireless sensor networks where the communication is based on infrequent small packet transfers;such target applications then include, for example, home and office automation wireless sensor networks, safety systems, street lighting, industrial manufacturing and management, and telemetry.

Implementation of a TDMA Based wireless network coding Prototype System with Ethernet Frame Aggregation

This paper presents the feasibility of a wireless network coding prototype system based on time division multiple access using the global positioning system to facilitate the time synchronization of wireless nodes. We evaluate the system throughput of the prototype system with wireless network coding and Ethernet frame aggregation in the full buffer traffic environment assuming web browsing and voice over Internet protocol. The experimental results show that the prototype system improves the system throughput by approximately 1.85-fold compared to a system without wireless network coding or aggregation even in a multipath Rician fading environment.

Optimised Constellation Prerotation for 3-Terminal 1-Relay network with wireless network coding

wireless (Physical-Layer) network coding (WNC) is an interference harnessing physical-layer concept combining network coding principles and broadcast nature of the wireless medium. Significant capacity gains of WNC were shown in a wireless 2-Way Relay Channel (2-WRC). Extension of WNC to more complicated network topologies potentially offers even larger gains than in the 2-WRC. However, such an extension is generally non-trivial. In this paper, we show that it is feasible to achieve additional considerable capacity gains in comparison to bidirectional relaying approach in a three-terminal one-relay network. We focus on the constellation design for its uplink (Multiple Access Channel (MAC) stage). The throughput maximisation is achieved by an optimised prerotation of source constellations, effectively reducing a number of required MAC stages.
