In this paper, we propose a practical low delay digital scheme for lossy transmission of a Gaussian source over Gaussian broadcast channel when there is correlated side information at the receivers. Focusing on two receivers scenario, a bit-filling criterion is applied at the transmitter, to establish a connection between the common layer and refinement layer data. Then, we complete the dirty paper coding according to jointly typicality and finally superimpose the two layers for transmission. At the receiver, we propose a modified log-likelihood ratio-belief propagation decoding algorithm to utilize side information. And a typical-set based decoding algorithm is introduced to be an effective supplement if the decoding decision of the successive canceling method fails. Simulated results show that the proposed typical set decoding algorithm plays an excellent part in refinement layer recovery, and on the whole, the proposed digital scheme renders better reconstruction accuracy than the corresponding low delay separate source channel coding.

In distributed video coding (DVC), the decoder has considerably high computational complexity as compared to the encoder. The side information plays a crucial role in the successful reconstruction of the wyner-ziv frame. However, the side information generation process puts a substantial decoding delay due to its high computational complexity. Phase-Based Interpolation (PBI) is introduced in this work for side information generation. The simulated results on different test videos show that the PBI computational complexity remains low for all kinds of videos. It performs 2.5 to 2.7 times faster than motion-compensated temporal Interpolation (MCTI) with an average acceptable loss of 4.5-5.1 dB in PSNR and 0.09-0.11 dB in SSIM while preserving the structure and sharpness in interpolated frames.

Compressing Light Field (LF) imaging data is a challenging but very important task for both LF image transmission and storage applications. In this paper, we propose a novel coding solution for LF images using the well-known wyner-ziv (WZ) information theorem. First, the LF image is decomposed into a fourth-dimensional LF (4D-LF) data format. Using a spiral scanning procedure, a pseudo-sequence of 4D-LF is generated. This sequence is then compressed in a distributed coding manner as specified in the WZ theorem. Secondly, a novel adaptive frame skipping algorithm is introduced to further explore the high correlation between 4D-LF pseudo-sequences. Experimental results show that the proposed IF image compression solution is able to achieve a significant performance improvement with respect to the standard, notably around 54% bitrate saving when compared with the standard High Efficiency Video coding (HEVC) Intra benchmark while requiring less computational complexity.

We propose a data-driven approach to explicitly learn the progressive encoding of a continuous source, which is successively decoded with increasing levels of quality and with the aid of correlated side information. This setup refers to the successive refinement of the wyner-ziv coding problem. Assuming ideal Slepian-Wolf coding, our approach employs recurrent neural networks (RNNs) to learn layered encoders and decoders for the quadratic Gaussian case. The models are trained by minimizing a variational bound on the rate-distortion function of the successively refined wyner-ziv coding problem. We demonstrate that RNNs can explicitly retrieve layered binning solutions akin to scalable nested quantization. Moreover, the rate-distortion performance of the scheme is on par with the corresponding monolithic wyner-ziv coding approach and is close to the ratedistortion bound.

In this paper, the problem of achieving information integrity in the classical wyner-ziv lossy source coding model is considered. A discrete memoryless source encodes its source sequence using the standard wyner-ziv coding technique and forwards the bin index to another source that employs the bin index and its own correlated sequence to decode the first source's sequence. There is an adversary who may arbitrarily modify the bin index sent to the decoder. It is assumed the adversary may base the attack on the true bin index, its own sequence (which may be correlated to both the encoder and decoder sequences) as well as the known codebook used by the sources. It is shown that a non-simulatability condition on the joint source distribution is necessary and sufficient to achieve information integrity. However, the additional requirement of information integrity may incur a penalty on the rate-distortion performance.

As one of the most adopted distributed video coding approaches in the literature, wyner-ziv (WZ) video coding is not yet on par with the motion-compensated predictive coding solutions with respect to rate-distortion (RD) performance. One of the essential reasons lies in the absence of reliable knowledge of the correlation statistics between source and side information. Most of the existing works assume a probability distribution of the statistical dependency to be Laplacian, which is not accurate but computationally cheap. In this paper, a correlation estimation based on Gaussian mixture model is proposed for the band-level correlation noise of discrete cosine transform domain wyner-ziv codec. The statistics of the correlation noise between WZ frame and corresponding side information is analyzed by considering the temporal correlation and quantization distortion. Accordingly, the model parameters for correlation noise are estimated offline and utilized online in consequent decoding. The simulation results of Kullback-Leibler divergence show that the proposed model has higher accuracy than the Laplacian one. Experimental results demonstrate that the WZ codec incorporated with the proposed model can achieve very competitive RD performance, especially for the sequence with high motion contents and large group of picture (GOP) size.

In this letter, we present the exact wyner-ziv limit for binary source coding with side information correlated by a Z-channel and with the Hamming-distance as distortion metric. A surprising discovery is that, unlike the general case, wyner-ziv coding under this setup does not suffer a rate loss compared to source coding with side information available at both the encoder and the decoder. Highlighting the significance of our finding, we note that this is an additional case for which wyner-ziv coding is shown not to suffer a rate loss apart from the quadratic Gaussian case, proven by wyner and ziv, and its generalization by Pradhan et al.

coding schemes for several problems in network information theory are constructed starting from point-to-point channel codes that are designed for symmetric channels. Given that the point-to-point codes satisfy certain properties pertaining to the rate, the error probability, and the distribution of decoded sequences, bounds on the performance of the coding schemes are derived and shown to hold irrespective of other properties of the codes. In particular, we consider the problems of lossless and lossy source coding, Slepian-Wolf coding, wyner-ziv coding, Berger-Tung coding, multiple description coding, asymmetric channel coding, Gelfand-Pinsker coding, coding for multiple access channels, Marton coding for broadcast channels, and coding for cloud radio access networks (C-RAN's). We show that the coding schemes can achieve the best known inner bounds for these problems, provided that the constituent point-to-point channel codes are rate-optimal. This would allow one to leverage commercial off-the-shelf codes for point-to-point symmetric channels in the practical implementation of codes over networks. Simulation results demonstrate the gain of the proposed coding schemes compared to existing practical solutions to these problems.

We consider lossy compression of an information source when the decoder has lossless access to a correlated one. This setup, also known as the wyner-ziv problem, is a special case of distributed source coding. To this day, practical approaches for the wyner-ziv problem have neither been fully developed nor heavily investigated. We propose a data-driven method based on machine learning that leverages the universal function approximation capability of artificial neural networks. We find that our neural network-based compression scheme, based on variational vector quantization, recovers some principles of the optimum theoretical solution of the wyner-ziv setup, such as binning in the source space as well as optimal combination of the quantization index and side information, for exemplary sources. These behaviors emerge although no structure exploiting knowledge of the source distributions was imposed. Binning is a widely used tool in information theoretic proofs and methods, and to our knowledge, this is the first time it has been explicitly observed to emerge from data-driven learning.

Low-Delay Digital and Hybrid Digital/Analog Schemes for wyner-ziv Problem Over Gaussian Broadcast Channel

We consider practical low-delay coding schemes for the lossy transmission of a Gaussian source over a Gaussian broadcast channel with two receivers in the wyner-ziv setting. One digital scheme and one hybrid digital/analog (HDA) scheme are proposed. Both schemes combine layered coding and dirty paper coding (DPC) at the transmitter. The digital scheme uses layered coding where the common layer information is intended for both receivers while the refinement layer is destined only for the receiver with better quality. Instead of just superimposing the two layers, we propose a bit-filling procedure based DPC to transmit these two layers. A modified log-likelihood ratio based belief propagation algorithm improves the successive canceling procedure with the help of side information. If the refinement-layer decoding decision fails, a typical set-based decoding algorithm is introduced. The proposed HDA scheme superimposes not only the digital information, but also the analog information, quantization error, at the encoder with DPC. Accordingly, we present a scoring-typical set-based decoding algorithm that includes the minimum mean square error estimator for the analog component. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes exhibit performance improvements, and the distortion is shown to be reasonably low for very short block length. Finally we extend the proposed schemes to the three-users case to validate their superiority in the general case.
