In this paper, we study the Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP) of Receive-Spatial Modulation (R-SM) in Rayleigh channels. R-SM is a multi-antenna wireless scheme that extends the concept of Spatial Modulation (SM) at the receiver side by using linear precoding. An accurate statistical framework is used for the characterization of the received signal. Using this framework, we provide novel and analytical bounds that characterize the ABEP of R-SM. Monte Carlo simulation results are used for the verification of the derived bounds. We compare R-SM against the corresponding standard Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) scheme and show its performance. We conclude that R-SM is able to offer the same or better BER performance as traditional MIMO only when the spectral efficiency is low and the number of transmit and receive antennas is low.

We have recently proposed a zero-forcing (ZF) precoding design for massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with multiple numerologies, which are promising communication systems employing distinct orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) frame structures for simultaneously satisfying diverse requirements of user equipments (UEs). While the achievable rate with the ZF precoder is analyzed with perfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) in the previous work, obtaining perfect CSIT is impractical in massive MIMO systems. The achievable rate with imperfect CSIT is investigated in this paper. We consider the ZF precoding constructed by using the estimated channels from uplink channel estimation in time division duplexing systems. Both the closed-form expression of the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the lower bound (LB) of the ergodic achievable rate in the presence of imperfect CSIT are derived. It turns out that the LB converges to the LB provided in our previous work, which assumes perfect CSIT, as the pilot-to-noise ratio becomes infinity. Simulation results verify the tightness of the LB.

This paper presents a frame analysis of zero forcing (ZF) precoding problem. It shows that from a frame point of view, the filter bank (FB) channel is a synthesis frame and its canonical dual analysis frame is the optimal ZF precoder under total power constraint. Based on this analysis, a new precoder design is presented. The new design removes the minimum phase assumption of polyphase FB channel in the existing methods and gives rise to optimal noncausal (stable) precoder. It provides a general framework for optimal zero-forcing precoding under total power constraint. The numerical results show that the new design outperforms existing causal stable design.

This paper investigates zero forcing (ZF) precoding in MIMO FB channels subject to individual channel power constraints. It shows that the optimal ZF precoder is noncausal in general and presents a general formulation for the design of optimal noncausal ZF precoder subject to individual channel power constraints. A convex optimization based method is derived from the formulation to design optimal noncausal precoder. Numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the design method and the advantage of the designed optimal noncausal ZF precoder.

In this paper, we investigate a MIMO relaying network with massive antennas for serving multi-pair single-antenna users, where zero-forcing (ZF) precoding is explored at the relay. Our aim is to maximize the energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the transmit power at the source-nodes and the relay, and the number of relay antennas. To solve the EE optimization problem, a lower bound of the involved spectral efficiency (SE) is derived with analytical expression. Since the original fractional optimization problem is non-convex, we transform the objective function into an equivalent parametric subtractive form by using the properties of fractional programming. Then, an iterative algorithm is developed relying on the partial convexity of the subtractive cost function, where the analytical solutions are deduced. Finally, the effectiveness and convergence behavior of our proposed scheme are verified through the numerical results.

Artificial-Noise-Aided precoding Design for Multi-User Visible Light Communication Channels

Recent developments in visible light communications (VLC) have focused on enhancing its security and privacy. This paper studies the physical layer security in VLC networks with multiple users when there is a single wiretap eavesdropper. In particular, our aim is to design the optimal artificial noise (AN)aided precoding scheme to improve the secrecy performance in terms of legitimate users and eavesdropper's signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs). The purpose of our AN-aided precoding design is to ensure a fairness of the legitimate users' SINRs while impairing the quality of eavesdropper's channel as much as possible. Depending on the availability of the eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters, there are generally two design strategies. When the eavesdropper's CSI is unknown to the transmitters (i.e., passive eavesdropper), the AN is constructed to be orthogonal to the users' aggregate channel matrix. In case the eavesdropper's CSI is available (i.e., active eavesdropper), the AN design strategy is to keep the SINR of the eavesdropper below a certain predefined threshold. Aside from the general design, we also study a specific design with the zero-forcing (ZF) technique and compare its performance with that of the general design. In both designs, numerical results show that significant gaps between users' and eavesdropper's SINR can always be achieved, thus guaranteeing a high secrecy performance. It is also observed that while the general design outperforms the ZF one in terms of the users' SINRs, it does not result in lower eavesdropper's SINRs compared to the ZF design, especially in the low transmit power region.

A novel low complexity downlink linear precoding algorithm for massive MIMO systems

The tremendous advancements in 4G and beyond 4G wireless standards requires a high demand for the increased data rate, high spectral efficiency and minimal power requirement. Massive MIMO is a key technology that can be used to attain all the above requirements at the cost of increased complexity. The performance of this massive MIMO system can be optimized by simple linear precoding techniques, the complexity of which lies on the inversion of large size matrix. In this paper, we propose a large scale low complexity matrix inversion algorithm which is highly suitable for parallel architecture. The proposed algorithm makes use of Chebyshev polynomial and Weyl's inequality and named as Weyl's Chebyshev acceleration (WCA) algorithm. This algorithm is further simplified by exploiting the diagonal dominance property of the positive definite Hermitian Gram matrix that is to be inverted. The specialty of this algorithm is, it is inner product free which makes this highly suitable for parallel computing environment and thus the algorithm becomes speedy. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated in urban micro cell scenario and is proven to be more efficient in terms of BER performance and complexity. Also the proposed WCA based precoding algorithm achieves approximately 50% of complexity saving in the total flop count in comparison with the existing algorithms for the micro cell scenario. The BER performance reaches the near optimal results of ZF algorithm as SNR increases.

Multi-User precoding and Channel Estimation for Hybrid Millimeter Wave Systems

In this paper, we develop a low-complexity channel estimation for hybrid millimeter wave (mmWave) systems, where the number of radio frequency (RF) chains is much less than the number of antennas equipped at each transceiver. The proposed mmWave channel estimation algorithm first exploits multiple frequency tones to estimate the strongest angle-of-arrivals (AoAs) at both base station (BS) and user sides for the design of analog beamforming matrices. Then, all the users transmit orthogonal pilot symbols to the BS along the directions of the estimated strongest AoAs in order to estimate the channel. The estimated channel will be adopted to design the digital zero-forcing (ZF) precoder at the BS for the multi-user downlink transmission. The proposed channel estimation algorithm is applicable to both the non-sparse and sparse mmWave channel environments. Furthermore, we derive a tight achievable rate upper bound of the digital ZF precoding with the proposed channel estimation algorithm scheme. Our analytical and simulation results show that the proposed scheme obtains a considerable achievable rate of fully digital systems, where the number of RF chains equipped at each transceiver is equal to the number of antennas. Besides, considering the effect of various types of errors, i.e., random phase errors, transceiver analog beamforming errors, and equivalent channel estimation errors, we derive a closed-form approximation for the achievable rate of the considered scheme. We illustrate the robustness of the proposed channel estimation and multi-user downlink precoding scheme against the system imperfection.

Global precoding is an effective way to suppress interference in cell-free massive MIMO systems. However, it requires all access points (APs) to upload their local instantaneous channel state information (CSI) to a central processor via capacity-constrained fronthaul links, consuming significant bandwidth resources. Such overhead may become unaffordable in an ultra-dense network (UDN) in future SG systems, due to the large number of APs and the frequent CSI uploads required to combat the fast-changing state of the high-frequency channels. In order to address this issue, we propose a novel bandwidth-efficient global zero-forcing precoding strategy for downlink transmission in cell-free massive MIMO systems. By exploiting the physical structure of Rician fading channels, we propose a novel model-based CSI compression mechanism, which decomposes a channel matrix into a line-of-sight (LoS) and a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) components, and then compresses them using a model-based method and a singular-value-decomposition (SVD)-based method, respectively. We also present two optimization-based algorithms to obtain the phase information of the LoS component of the channel, which is then used by the proposed channel matrix decomposition. The simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed precoding strategy on reducing the upload overhead and improving the bandwidth efficiency.
