Internet communications in general and the World-Wide Web specifically are revolutionizing the computer industry. Today, the Web is full of important documents and clever applets. Java applets and servlets are beginning to appear that provide useful and even mission critical applications. From the perspective of simulation, a future Web will be full of simulation models and large amounts of simulation-generated data. Many of the models will include two or three dimensional animation as well as virtual reality. Others will allow human interaction with simulation models to control or influence their execution no matter where the user is located in the world. Analysis of data from Web-based simulations involves greater degrees of freedom than traditional simulations. The number of simulation models available and the amount of simulation data are likely to be much greater. In order to assure the quality of data, the execution of models under a variety of scenarios should be well managed. Since the user community will also be larger, quality assurance should be delegated to agents responsible for defining scenarios and executing models. A major element of simulation analysis is the analysis of output data, which manages the execution of simulation models, in order to obtain statistical data of acceptable quality. Such data may be used to predict the performance of a single system, or to compare the performance of two or more alternative system designs using a single or multiple performance measures.

Silver-Silver direct bonding has been developed as an alternative interconnection technique for 3D power integration which can form high-strength and low-resistance Ag joints under solid-state conditions. However, the reliability and failure mechanisms of these direct bonded joints have not been characterized yet. In this study, four direct bonded structures were accelerated aged with two different temperature cycling tests (TCT) in the temperature range between -55 degrees C and 220 degrees C. The thermally induced stresses in the metallization during TCT can be relieved by elastic and plastic deformation of the Ag films and the debonding at the interface. At higher temperatures above 150 degrees C, plastic deformation mechanisms dominate the stress relaxation. Stress-driven void migration along grain boundaries may lead to cracking and interfacial failure. Metallization with a diffusion barrier and large grain size can restrict the void formation and diffusion, therefore, provide a higher temperature capability. The results indicate that both the adhesion of the Ag metallization and the Ag-Ag direct bonding remain stable after 1000 thermal cycles.

This paper describes 300GHz TDD (Time division duplex) radio units based on IEEE.802.15.3d. The radio units offer two 2.16-GHz channels whose frequencies are 286.2 GHz and 288.36 GHz. Outdoor propagation measurement is performed on a rooftop of a building in Waseda University campus. Weather and temperature sensors are installed for long-term measurement.

The primary objective of the X-57 Mod II test flights is to perform a functional checkout of the research traction battery power and motor systems, perform an airworthiness assessment of the modified vehicle, and to collect baseline performance, stability, and acoustic data for comparisons with later modifications of the X-57 airplane. This paper describes the planned flight operations of the Mod II airplane, the unique considerations and decisions made in operating an electric aircraft, and the development and planning of the research test points necessary to achieve the Mod II flight objectives. Due to the constrained flight time, which resulted from limited capacity of the battery system, careful scripting of flights was required to maximize test time and execute test points efficiently.

Strong interest has been generated in recent days regarding the development of biodegradable polymers. This interest is demonstrated by the scientific research and publication in the field. The ultimate goal of the development of biodegradable polymers is the use of these materials in consumer products. The paper presents a method for aerobic composting conditions, as well as, a methodology for anaerobic biodegradation conditions. The two methods described allow the determination of the ultimate biodegradability of a polymer material which could occur during typical aerobic or anaerobic solid-waste treatment processes. The characteristics of both tests include short duration, high selectivity, and high accuracy.

The rotation of peptide dipoles induced by stress is the probable origin of the piezoelectricity. Higher piezoelectric constants have been obtained for elongated and polarized synthetic polar polymers, in particular, polyvinylidene fluoride. The stress-induced variation of the spontaneous polarization appears to be the origin for this type of piezoelectricity. Comparison between previously known ferroelectric piezoelectric and piezoelectric polymers suggests new applications in the future.
