High performance, AlGaInP, strained-layer single quantum well, semiconductor laser diodes emitting in the 630 to 680 nm spectral range have been designed, fabricated, and characterized. Thermal calculations and modelling have been carried out both to estimate the thermal resistivity of various AlGaInP alloys and to optimize the device geometry and performance. Threshold current densities below 300 A/cm2 at room temperature, cw outputs over 1 Watt, and operating lifetimes in excess of 10,000 hours have been achieved.

The development of highly interactive multimedia applications is still a challenging and complex task. In, addition. to the application logic multimedia applications typicalty provide a sophisticated user interface with integrated media objects. As a consequonce, the development process involves different experts for softwave design, user interface design, and media design. There is still a lack of concepts for a structured development process to integrate these requirments. In this paper we introduce the Multimedia Modeling Language (MML), a visual modeling language supporting the design process in multimedia application development. It is part of a model-driven development approach for multimedia applications. The language is oriented on well-established software engineering concepts;in particular UML 2.0. It integrates the results of two different research lines: application-oriented multimedia modeling and model-based user interface development. In this paper we describe the concepts of the language and present the modeling process with MML. In particular we show how MML aims to integrate the different developer roles in multimedia application design.

We propose a polynomial-based scheme that addresses the problem of event region detection (PERD) for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Nodes of an aggregation tree perform function approximation of the event using multivariate polynomial regression. Only the coefficients of this polynomial are then transmitted up the tree instead of aggregated data. PERD includes two components: event recognition and event report with boundary detection. In addition, PERD is capable of detecting single event or multiple events simultaneously occurring in the WSN. Since PERD is implemented over a polynomial tree on a WSN in a distributed manner, it is easily scalable and computation overhead is very light. Results reveal that event(s) can be detected by PERD with error in detection remaining almost constant achieving a percentage error within a threshold of 10% with increase in communication range.

In EDM process, emission of toxic substances poses threat to OSH related issues. These emissions may cause adverse health effects to the operators and has the direct impact on the environment. The present investigation aims to relate the environmental hazards to the machining aspects of EDM process such as the machining parameters, different work piece materials viz. aluminum, mild steel and AISI-D3 tool steel with EDM 30 are used as a dielectric fluid and brass as an electrode. The results showed that the aluminium work piece material gave a higher emission rate and MRR compared with mild steel and AISI D3 tool steel due to the low melting and boiling temperature. Among the process parameters, peak current and pulse duration was found to strongly affect the emission and performance aspects.

The traditional way of high voltage (HV) measuring has some intrinsic shortcomings. With the recent improvement in digital measuring techniques and computers, digital automated measuring are become more prevalent. The virtual instrument (VI), which is a new technology in signal detecting, analyzing and processing, has been the authors' main focus. This paper introduces the concept and characters of VI, its three main types and presents a PC-based VI to measure 8/20 /spl mu/s impulse current. The VI is implemented in the two ways: the popular object-oriented programming language-Visual C++, and the famous graphical programming environment-LabVIEW. Signals are processed with the digital filter, smoothing window and fast Fourier transformation (FFT). Wave parameters can be calculated quickly and shown in the soft front panel. It can also be used to measure other high voltage waves after changed a little.

Silicon Physical Unclonable Functions (PIM) are novel circuits that exploit the random variations that exist in CMOS manufacturing process to generate chip-unique random bits. As their applications are security based, it is highly desired to have PIM responses that are very stable against the reliability issues that exist in Integrated Circuits (IC). One of the major sources of unreliability in the technology nodes 90nm and below is device aging. Aging is primarily due to phenomena like Bias Temperature Instability (BTI) and Hot Carrier Injection (HCI). In this work, we study the effect of device aging on the stability of Ring Oscillator PUFs for different PUF circuit-level choices and operating conditions. We observe that most of the PUF's aging instability happens early in its lifetime. Due to the typical differential nature of PUF structures, stability does not change significantly with age. Further, a high correlation has been observed between instability that is caused due to aging and instability that is caused due to temperature. In various ROPIT setups and operating conditions, we observe that around 4% of the PUF bits are prone to instability due to aging.
