Gamma irradiation is a useful method for sterilizing demineralized bone matrix (DBM), but its effect on the osteoinductivity of DBM is still controversial. In this study, the osteoinductive activity of gamma-irradiated DBM was examined using a mouse myoblastic cell line (C2C12). DBM was extracted from adult bovine bone and was irradiated at a dose of 25 kGy using a (60)cobalt gamma-irradiator. Cell proliferation with DBM was not affected by gamma-irradiation, but alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin productions were significantly increased in C2C12 cell groups treated with gamma-irradiated DBM. It was reasoned that bone morphogenetic proteins were more efficiently released from gamma-irradiated DBM than from the non-irradiated control. This result suggests the effectiveness of radiation sterilization of bone implants (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We study the production of first radial excited states D-q(2S) (q = u, d, s) and B-q(2S) in exclusive semi-leptonic B-q' (q' = u, d, s, c) decays by the improved Bethe-Salpeter method. These 2S states can be detected through their strong decays to ground mesons, where the strong decays are calculated by the low-energy approximation as well as the impulse approximation. Some channels have ratios of order 10(-4): Br(B+ -> (D) over bar (0)(2S)l(+) v(l)) x Br((D) over bar (0)(2S) -> (D) over bar*pi) approximate to (4.9 +/- 4.0) x 10(-4), Br(B-0 -> (D) over bar (-)(2S)l(+) v(l)) x Br((D) over bar (-)(2S) -> (D) over bar*pi) approximate to (4.4 +/- 3.4) x 10(-4). These channels could be measured by the current B-factories. For D-s(2S) we also obtain a relative large ratio: Br(B-s(0) -> (D) over bar (-)(s)(2S)l(+) v(l)) x Br((D) over bar (-)(s)(2S) -> (D) over bar*(K) over bar) approximate to (9.9 +/- 14.9) x 10(-4). Although there are discrepancies in the full decay width between the theoretical predictions of D-0(2S) and the experimental results of D(2550)(0), the new detected state D(2550)(0) is very likely the D-0(2S) state.
