Automated machine vision pipelines do not need the exact visual content to perform their tasks. Therefore, there is a potential to remove private information from the data without significantly affecting the machine vision accuracy. We present a novel method to create a privacy-preserving latent representation of an image that could be used by a downstream machine vision model. This latent representation is constructed using adversarial training to prevent accurate reconstruction of the input while preserving the task accuracy. Specifically, we split a Deep Neural Network (DNN) model and insert an autoencoder whose purpose is to both reduce the dimensionality as well as remove information relevant to input reconstruction while minimizing the impact on task accuracy. Our results show that input reconstruction ability can be reduced by about 0.8 dB at the equivalent task accuracy, with degradation concentrated near the edges, which is important for privacy. At the same time, 30% bit savings are achieved compared to coding the features directly.

Current extrapolations of accelerated test results to life in long term service may be greatly misleading when it comes to lead free solder joints. Notably, realistic service conditions are almost never well approximated by cycling with a fixed amplitude. However, recent results have demonstrated the consistent breakdown of common damage accumulation rules. In isothermal cycling tests the remaining life, after a step-down in amplitude, was invariably shorter than predicted by such a rule, while a step-up tended to have the opposite effect. The present work offers a mechanistic explanation for this and a basis for the development of a practical approach to the assessment of life under realistic service conditions. Realistic BGA joints were cycled individually in a micromechanical tester, monitoring the solder stiffness and the inelastic energy deposition. Cycling was seen to first cause rapid hardening, followed by leveling off in a "cyclic saturation" stage and eventually the initiation and growth of a crack until failure. A temporary increase in amplitude during cycling caused a lasting reduction in hardness, and thus enhanced inelastic energy deposition and damage evolution, afterwards as well. This would dominate during repeated increases and decreases, eventually shortening the remaining life dramatically.

In this work, we propose Dilated Point Convolutions (DPC). In a thorough ablation study, we show that the receptive field size is directly related to the performance of 3D point cloud processing tasks, including semantic segmentation and object classification. Point convolutions are widely used to efficiently process 3D data representations such as point clouds or graphs. However, we observe that the receptive field size of recent point convolutional networks is inherently limited. Our dilated point convolutions alleviate this issue, they significantly increase the receptive field size of point convolutions. Importantly, our dilation mechanism can easily be integrated into most existing point convolutional networks. To evaluate the resulting network architectures, we visualize the receptive field and report competitive scores on popular point cloud benchmarks.
