The effect of the trabecular microstructure on the propagation of ultrasound waves through cancellous bone was numerically investigated by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. In a three-dimensional (3-D) numerical model reconstructed from a 3-D micro-computed tomography (μCT) image of bovine cancellous bone, the trabecular elements were eroded to increase the porosity using an image processing technique. Three erosion procedures were given to realize different changes in the trabecular microstructure with increasing the porosity. The FDTD simulation of the ultrasound pulse waves propagating through the eroded cancellous bone model was performed in two cases of the propagations parallel and perpendicular to the major trabecular orientation. The propagation properties of the wave amplitude and speed in each propagation direction were simulated as functions of the porosity, and their variability depending on the trabecular microstructure was revealed. The effects of the microstructures in the major and minor trabecular directions were investigated from the correlation coefficients of the propagation properties with the mean intercept lengths (MILs) of the trabecular elements in the two directions.

Climate change also increase different natural risk possibility - erosion and floods in coastal local municipalities in Latvia are becoming increasingly more important. The most significant flood risk factor, particularly in the climate change context, are wind surges, especially coinciding with ongoing sea level raise and, even, rapid and intence, rainfall, while the nation wide spread snowmelt flood risks are less impacting the coastal municipalities. Research-and-development study analyzed coastal risk governance and communication in two coastal municipalities in Latvia – Ventspils town and Salacgriva rural territory. The floods affected and also general household’s questionnaire surveys, complemented by structured in-depth interviews were performed. Both studies dealt in particular with still barely known risk communication as a specific field of communication, being multidisciplinary and complex. Analyzing risk communication developments, there have been applied and discussed the collaboration communication model, after its successful spreading at municipal level in Latvia during last decade. In order to provide successful environmental and development risks communication within a coastal municipality, it is necessary to collaboratively develop a set of four non-traditional communication instruments – information and education/training, participation and environment/health friendly and risk adapted behavior - among all of the parties and groups of interest involved, supported by the municipality and selectively focused on the relevant target groups. Today, mobile eye tracking systems have reached a high level of maturity. They are minimal invasive, allow to record a user-product interaction in its real environment and can reliably detect the user's gaze. Hence their implementation in usability testing of physical products promises great potential. This paper investigates whether the application of mobile eye tracking adds value to usability tests conducted by designers. The research question is approached in two steps. First, a laboratory experiment is conducted comparing designer's analysis of a user-product interaction through videos recorded either from the mobile eye tracking perspective or out of the third-person perspective. Second, different types of mobile eye tracking analyses are applied to usability tests in three case studies. The results of both studies show that compared to the third-person perspective those designers seeing the eye tracking perspective describe a scene significantly more detailed and isolate significantly more causes of problems. Furthermore the application of object-based, sequence-based and visual pattern-based analysis have the potential to uncover relevant users' needs.

This paper compares the use of signal to noise ratio (SNR)-dependent and SNR-independent mixtures of probabilistic linear discriminant analysis (PLDA) versus conventional PLDA, under multi-noise and multi-SNR conditions for a small-set speaker verification system. Results indicate that conventional PLDA is more robust under multi-SNR conditions. The effect of the testing speech length is also examined and speech signals with a length of 5 seconds were found to achieve acceptable results.

In the field of territorial sea protection, the detection of underwater vehicles is very important. Among the detection methods, infrared detection has many advantages. To make full use of infrared technology for detection, we put forward a new algorithm. In this paper, the infrared thermal wake of underwater vehicle is distinguished from that of vehicle on surface by the shape feature matching method based on Fourier descriptor. Firstly, the infrared image is processed and the thermal wake region is segmented. The thermal wake contour is extracted by contour tracking algorithm. The existence of the thermal wake of underwater vehicle is preliminarily judged based on the maximum area of connected regions and the number of connected regions. Then, the shape feature matching method of Fourier descriptor is used to classify the thermal wake of vehicle on surface and underwater vehicle. The experimental results show that the proposed method is effective in detecting the thermal wake of underwater vehicles.
