Knowledge representation and processing, learning and adjusting knowledge models, communication and interaction as well as problem solving are important skills of cognitive agents. But, in order to share the learned knowledge with other communication participants, the agent must pay attention to maintaining its own functionality when interacting with the physical environment. To comply with this requirement, the meaning of perceptions and the consequences of actions must be understood. This suggests that even the non-verbal exchange of information is based on the foundations of semiotics. In this work, we show that we can model non-verbal interactions with the same linguistic means as verbal communication. We demonstrate this by solving the bidirectional translation problem of symbolic sequences into semantics through the use of minimalist grammars. To verify this approach, we turn back to the well-known example of a cognitive mouse agent living in a maze world and model the interaction and behavioral control using database semantics in a fully deterministic setting. Finally, we propose a unifying perspective for non-verbal interaction and verbal communication as well as justify its relevance for Cognitive Infocommunications.

The aim of this paper is to offer mathematical proofs of Pawlak's rough set theory about distributed knowledge based on rough sets and relational databases. A case study on actual self-reported geriatric data for survival analysis is presented to provide a computational evidence of the distributed knowledge. Risk factors, prolongation time prediction rules and validation are also computed and discussed. We illustrate that dividing a decision table (or database) into smaller units will in general result in the loss of some information by rough set theory.

Adapting a modem's modulation scheme can significantly enhance the resulting performance over a wireless communications link. Non-adaptive modems are generally designed conservatively for worst-case channel conditions. Adaptive modems are able to exploit the higher channel capacity when good conditions are encountered. A number of different metrics can be used to drive the adaptation process (i.e. automatic repeat request (ARQ) or segment error rate (SER)). Not surprisingly, certain metrics are far more successful than others. This paper presents an investigation of adaptive modulation in the presence of interference. In particular, the case of non reciprocal interference is studied (i.e., cases where the level of interference is different on the forward and reverse links). Research results have shown that if adaptation is performed assuming a reciprocal channel, then poor performance will result for the link experiencing a higher level of interference. In this study, an algorithm is used to calculate a measure of the link quality. This value is then fed back to the other end of the link to adapt subsequent transmissions. Results indicate that the throughput of such a system can be considerably improved when transmitting adaptively using any one of DBPSK, DQPSK or 8DPSK modulation schemes. It is proposed that this simple approach be adopted for short range, ad hoc, wireless personal area networks (WPAN).

Nth-order synthetic elements are presented in this contribution. Two basic current-mode dual-output active elements known as dual-output current followers (DO-CF) are used in the essential single-ended (S-E) circuit and two fully-differential current followers (FD-CF) are used in the fully-differential (F-D) equivalent. Both S-E and F-D 2nd-order low-pass and high-pass responses are shown as examples of particular solutions. Results of AC simulations together with tolerance analyses are included in order to prove design correctness.

We located the electrical junction (EJ) of Cu(In, Ga)Se 2 (CIGS) and Cu 2 ZnSnSe 4 (CZTS) solar cells with ~20-nm accuracy using a scanning capacitance spectroscopy (SCS) technique. A procedure was developed to prepare the cross-sectional samples and grow critical high-quality insulating layers for the SCS measurement. We found that CIGS has a buried homojunction with the EJ located at ~40 nm inside the CIGS/CdS interface. An n-type CIGS was probed in the region 10-30 nm away from the interface. By contrast, the CZTS/CdS cells have a heterointerface junction with a shallower EJ (~20 nm) than CIGS. The EJ is ~20 nm from the CZTS/CdS interface, which is consistent with asymmetrical carrier concentrations of the p-CZTS and n-CdS in a heterojunction cell. The unambiguous determination of the junction locations helped explain the large open circuit voltage difference between the state-of-the-art devices of CIGS and CZTS.

Labeled graphs are a subclass of the class of all diagrams which are widely used in various disciplines. In consequence, graph grammars have been developed as powerful and intuitive means for the generation and manipulation of such kind of diagrams. As the operations of graph grammars are local and non-deterministic in principle, additional concepts of control are required. While textual control structures for the application of graph grammars are well-known already, more intuitive diagrammatic control mechanisms are still missing. We use a combination of the UML Activity Diagrams and the earlier Dijkstra Schemas for this purpose. We present a control flow editor which the user can use to build up diagrammatic control structures for the execution of graph-grammatical diagram constructions. The control flow diagrams axe interpreted and animated such that the the user can observe an automatic diagram construction running along the specified control flow diagram.
