Automation in the manufacturing industry has changed the nature of tasks from ones having large motor components to ones that have significant cognitive components. For example, several complex inspection tasks which exist in modern industry involve significant cognitive, decision making and recognition skills. Often workers are not adequately equipped to perform these tasks imposed by the new manufacturing environment. Thus, while the demands of modern manufacturing may be increasing, workers' skills on the shop floor may in fact be diminishing. Training is the natural response to close this gap between task demands and worker skills. This paper reviews the principles of training and deduces their relevance to training for visual inspection. An example of use of these principles in developing a computer-based training program for visual inspection is given. Finally, the paper reports a study to support the application of advanced technology to visual inspection training for contact lens inspection.

We present a new technique combining digital holography and tomography to make path-resolved measurements of a turbulent air volume. An array of optical beams at different propagation angles is transmitted through the volume under test, interfered with a reference beam, and the resulting fringe patterns are all simultaneously recorded on a focal plane array. The complex field of each beam in the receiver pupil plane is recovered via digital Fourier processing and then tomographic reconstruction algorithms are applied to calculate wavefront error contributions from multiple planes along the beam path. Results are presented from a proof-of-concept laboratory experiment using phase screens to mimic the turbulence volume. Comparing the tomographic reconstructions to the known screen prescriptions, we successfully demonstrate accurate measurement of the phase distortions introduced in multiple planes. This ability to longitudinally resolve turbulence and isolate individual layers may benefit numerous applications including precision turbulent flow analysis in wind tunnels and adaptive optic compensation for free space optical communications.

The US Naval Research Laboratory has been working on testing processing and transponded payload configurations for the High Altitude Router and Relay (HARR) project to achieve a viable long range end-to-end mobile ad-hoc wireless network in a tactical environment. HARR has the potential to provide closed network communications and other tactical capabilities between nodes separated by over 200 miles, and at a relatively reduced cost. The system has at least one re-useable relay payload and at least two ground nodes. The relay payloads have the capability to send and receive signals to and from ground nodes as well as to other relay stations. The ground nodes have apparatus for acquiring, tracking, and determining the location of relay stations that are aloft. Our paper describes the integration of various commercial off the shelf (COTS) systems to construct this network, as well as an analysis of collected test data using unicast and multicast transport protocols in an IP based environment.
