Purpose:White matter damage of immaturity may affect visual, motor and cognitive *** multiple-case study presents standardized perimetry results in six teenagers and young adults born prematurely with visual dysfunction due to white matter damage of immaturity of pre-or perinatal ***:Six subjects, aged 13-25 years, born at a gestational age of 28-34 weeks, with white matter damage of immaturity documented by MRI,and optic disc appearances documented by fundus photography, were examined with manual and computerized quantitative ***:All subjects had subnormal visual field(VF)function, although the depth and extension of the VF defects differed between *** inferior VF function was more deviant than the superior in all *** concordance between the VF defects detected with the different techniques was good, although the static computerized techniques revealed slightly more ***:White matter damage of immaturity may affect the *** lower VF is often more affected than the *** abnormalities can be demonstrated by both manual and computerized perimetry.

Arginase II (All) has been almost exclusively studied in male mammalian kidneys. Our investigations were conducted to localize All gene expression in the female mouse kidney, and to analyze the differential expression of All gene at the transcriptional and translational levels in the kidneys of female and male mice. Total RNAs and soluble proteins extracted from renal zones and whole kidneys were analyzed by Northern and Western blots, respectively. Mitochondrial and cytosolic proteins were analyzed by Western blot. L-[guanidino- 14 C]arginine hydrolysis by All was detected in microdissected tubules and the (CO2)-C-14, released from C-14]urea hydrolysis was quantified. The results of these experiments showed that: (1) both All mRNA and protein were highly expressed in the deep cortex and the outer stripe of the outer medulla, (2) urea was produced mainly in the proximal straight tubules (PST), (3) the 38-kDa All protein was more abundant in the mitochondria than the cytosol, and (4) the renal content of All mRNA and protein was about three-fold higher in female than in male mice. In conclusion, in both genders, All gene expression is restricted to the PST and localized into mitochondria. All gene is differentially expressed in the kidney of female and male mice since higher levels of All mRNA. protein and activity were observed in the kidneys of the former than those of the latter. Renal All gene expression was gender-dependent in mice but not in rats. Finally, in the PST of females, L-arginine-derived ornithine may be a precursor for the renal production of L-glutamate and L-glutamine because high levels of All, ornithine aminotransferase and glutamine synthetase are expressed in this nephron segment.

Transferring between a ship and an offshore platform is potentially dangerous owing to excessive motion caused by rough conditions. In this paper, we focus on a small vessel with consideration of three degrees of freedom of motion: heaving, rolling, and surging. To stabilize these motions using a relatively small device, we propose an underactuated mechanism including two linear actuators and a two-degree-of-freedom gangway connected to the transfer platform. First, we clarify the degrees of freedom and range of the mechanism. Next, we derive a model and design a controller to stabilize the system. Finally, the effectiveness of the mechanism and its controller are tested by numerical simulation as well as by an actual experiment on a small-scale model of the mechanism.
