With the development of new technologies, new dynamic epithelial artifacts (new tattoos) are designed, enabling new types of situated and embodied multimodal communication. New tattoos (NTs) turn the skin into a source of dynamic and reversible inscription, possibly responsive to fine-grained organic variations, and dependent on oriented local perturbation. As new aesthetic-cognitive artifacts, NTs alter the operational and semiotic dimension of the skin, transforming it into a new frame of interactive interface. Eye gaze controlled interfaces allow us to directly manipulate a graphical user interface just by looking at it. It has already been explored for assistive technology. Eye gaze controlled interface has great potential use in military aviation. In particular, operating different displays in situations where pilots' hands are occupied with flying the aircraft. This paper reports two studies on analyzing accuracy of eye gaze controlled interface inside aircraft undertaking representative flying missions. We reported that pilots can undertake representative pointing and selection tasks at less than 2 sees on average and the accuracy of COTS eye gaze tracking glass is less than 5° of visual angle up to +3G, although it is less accurate at -1G and +5G. We used these results in developing a multimodal head and eye gaze movement based HMDS and in a user study involving standard ISO 9241 pointing task. The average pointing and selection times was significantly lower in the proposed system compared to traditional TDS.

Home appliances are responsible of a significant part of residential energy consumption and have a major impact in the overall energetic system efficiency. Most of them perform an indirect ac-dc-ac conversion in order to obtain the required output voltage level and frequency, depending on the applications. Thus, a high-efficiency and power density converter is required for this application where cost-effectiveness is mandatory. This paper presents an intermediate dc-dc converter intended to optimize the performance of such appliances. The proposed topology do not require an inductance, increasing its power density and efficiency, and reducing the overall converter cost. Besides, it has a fixed voltage conversion ratio requiring no complex closed-loop control and can operate both in buck and boost modes with high efficiency in the whole operating range. The performance of the proposed converter has been tested through a 2200 W prototype intended to be integrated in an induction heating appliance, proving the good performance in terms of power density and efficiency in the entire operating range.

Typically a diagnostic algorithm based on a cardiac-function test uses a threshold on a parameter to separate normal from diseased patients. This threshold may be determined through discriminant analysis or through a fixed choice of sensitivity or specificity. A more global approach is to plot sensitivities versus specificities as the threshold varies over its range. Such a plot is the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The area under the curve provides a nonparametric measure of the ability of a test to separate the two populations. A methodology is presented for comparing two tests on the same patient population using the differences in ROC areas. The method is applied to nuclear ventriculography parameters in the same patients, a normal group of 40 and a group of 24 with coronary disease and visible apical dyskinesis. The variables of interest are the fast filling fraction (FFF), ejection fraction (EF), and phase (PH). In terms of ROC area, there is evidence that FFF and PH differ, and some evidence that EF and PH differ, but none that FFF and EF differ.< >

As a general framework to determine a collision-free feedback motion strategies, the Random Neighborhood Graph (RNG) approach [19] defines a global navigation function over an approximate representation of the free configuration. In this paper, we improve the RNG approach in several aspects. We present an ANN-accelerated RNG construction algorithm to achieve near logarithmic running time in each iteration of the RNG expansion. Two probabilistic termination conditions of the RNG construction algorithm are presented and analyzed. To help overcome the difficulty of narrow corridors, we also introduce a randomized perturbation algorithm to enhance the sampling quality. Our implementation illustrates a significant performance improvement.

An experimental ultrahigh-definition color video camera system with 7680 (H) x 4320 (V) pixels has been developed using four 8-million-pixel CCDs. The 8-million-pixel CCD with a progressive scanning rate of 60 frames per second has 4046 (H) x 2048 (V) effective imaging pixels, each of which is 8.4 micron(2). We applied the foul-imager pickup method to increase the camera's resolution. This involves attaching four CCDs to a special color-separation prism. Two CCDs are used for the green image;and the other two are used for red and blue. The spatial image sampling pattern of these CCDs to the optical image is equivalent to one with 32 million pixels in the Bayer pattern color filter. The prototype camera attains a limiting resolution of more than 2700 TV lines both horizontally and vertically, which is higher than that of an 8-million-CCD. The sensitivity of the camera is 2000 lux, F 2.8 at approx. 50 dB of dark-noise level on the HDTV format. Its other specifications are a dynamic range of 200 %, a power consumption of about 600 W and a weight, with lens, of 76 kg.
