Many educational institutions are developing graduate programs in software engineering targeted to working professionals. These educators face the dilemma of providing programs with both industrial relevance and academic excellence. This paper describes our experience and lessons learned in developing such a program, the Oregon Master of Software Engineering (OMSE). Systems with static nonlinearities on the process output occur very frequently in the chemical industry. This paper discusses a framework for controlling these types of processes. This framework is then applied to the case of a CSTR neutralization reactor. The robust stability of the resulting framework is studied by examining the case when the static output nonlinearity changes with time and also when a disturbance occurs on the process output. The results in this work show that there is not a unique answer to the optimal choice of model in the controller for the pH system, but a good choice can be recommended.

Alternating solenoid focused muon cooling ring without special bending magnets is considered and investigate in detail. Both fringe field between solenoid coils with opposite directed current, and an inclination of the coils in vertical plane are used to provide a bending and closing of the particle trajectories. Realistic (Maxwellian) magnetic field is calculated and used for a simulation. Methodic is developed and applied to find closed orbit at any energy, dispersion, region of stability, and other conventional accelerator characteristics. Earlier proposed RFOFO cooling ring with 200 MHz RF system and liquid hydrogen absorbers is investigated in detail. After an optimization, normalized 6D emittance about 20 mm/sup 3/ and transmission 57% are obtained.

The proposed work presents an efficient, local adaptive sharpening scheme which sharpens the low resolution images so as to effectively reduce the blurring in the up-sampled, high resolution images. The up-sampled, high resolution images or video intra-frames generated using various interpolation techniques, suffer through blurring at the edges and fast changing regions. The degree of blurring is more in the high variance regions as compared to the slowly varying, flat regions. Therefore, to restore the high frequency information effectively, the high variance regions should be more enhanced than the flat or slowly varying regions prior to the up-sampling process. So, in this proposed method, the blurring kernel, used in unsharp masking operation, is made locally adaptive as per the normalized statistical local variance in a 3x3 neighborhood. As per the adaptive algorithm, the central weight of the blurring kernel varies directly as per the local descriptor of a 3x3 neighborhood. Consequently, the high variance regions are more enhanced than the slowly varying flat regions to counter the blurring problem in the up-sampled, high resolution images or video sequences. Experimental results show that the proposed method gives much better performance than the widely used interpolation schemes in terms of objective and subjective measures under varying zooming conditions.

To expand the multi-quasiparticle (qp) configuration space of the projected shell model, the Pfaffian algorithm is applied to facilitate calculations of the matrix elements. With inclusion of 6-qp states in the projected basis, the yrast band of Hf-166 at very high spins is studied, where the observed three anomalies in moment of inertia are well reproduced and explained by the contributions of the 2-qp, 4-qp, and 6-qp states, respectively.

In order to solve the problem of overvoltage of single phase grounding fault of paralleled 12-pulse rectifier system, firstly the common mode wave problem of monopole in DC side at fault is analyzed. Secondly, the transient overvoltage of the system at the AC side single phase fault is analyzed by simplifying the charging and discharging circuit of capacitances on DC side. Finally, the theory of frequency extinguishing arc is used to simulate the intermittent arc grounding overvoltage. It is proved that the capacitance on DC side also affects the AC overvoltage in the system that provides a basis for the better suppression of overvoltage in the project. The correctness of the conclusion is verified by PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software in the analysis process.
