High power (265 mW) kink free operation of 4 mum wide stripe devices is demonstrated for a 970 nm InGaAs/GaAs/AlGaAs asymmetric structure in CW conditions. The maximum of the optical field distribution is moved towards the n-side of the structure. The structure was designed to allow a higher value of the catastrophic optical damage of the mirror (COD). For devices having uncoated mirrors the COD level is 200 mW / facet. The kink free operation is limited by thermal waveguiding. The same devices operate kink free until 500 mA if operated in pulsed conditions: 1.75 mus pulse width / 36 mus between pulses.

Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is an effective technique for localizing cloned DNA probes directly onto metaphase chromosomes. Human genome mapping using FISH has been significantly enhanced by the development of new techniques, especially high-resolution gene mapping with direct R-banding FISH and physical gene ordering with multi-color FISH. By contrast, FISH techniques have not been put to practical use for the analysis of the mouse genome compared with the human. We have developed and modified FISH techniques for use in mouse genome analysis. In this article we summarize and review our recent results with FISH analyses in the following studies: (i) high-resolution gene mapping with the direct R-banding FISH, (ii) analysis of chromosomal rearrangement with multi-color FISH, (iii) establishment of centromere mapping with the major satellite DNA probe, (iv) analysis of chromatin structure in meiotic cells, and (v) application of FISH in cytogenetic studies of genetic variation in the mouse, showing that these applications of FISH are very useful for mouse genome analysis.

The paper deals with same research efforts focused to improve the dynamic performances of the PM-hybrid stepping motors, in order to try to keep competitive this incremental motion actuator in high performance industrial control applications too. Through application of the field-oriented control strategy of the AC drives for stepping motors a high dynamic servomotor is obtained, with similar performances of the DC motor ones. The robustness of the stepping motor regarding the strongly parameter and load torque variations with a specially designed fuzzy controller is achieved. The computer-aided simulations and laboratory experimental results prove the good dynamic response and high incremental motion precision of the motor.

An earlier paper (Part I) has shown how key parameters associated with the uniform stress process zone model of a crack: crack tip opening displacement, process zone size, crack opening area and the effective opening area of the process zone, depend upon parameters that are associated with the relevant terms in the expansion of the expression, for the purely elastic situation, for the relative displacement of the crack faces or the stress ahead of an elastic crack. The earlier paper focussed upon the case where the non-linear (with regards to applied stress) contributions to the crack-process zone parameters were determined to the first two terms in increasing powers of the applied loading stress parameter. These terms depend upon the first two terms in the expressions for the crack face relative displacement or the stress ahead of the crack in the elastic situation. The first of these terms is related to the stress intensity factor. In this paper we show how the parameter g0, which defines the second term, can be determined for some idealised situations.
