Contributing to its Own Defeat: The Luftwaffe and the Battle of Britain

The popular British perception of the Battle of Britain is that it was a close battle, won against all the odds by a small force of determined British fighter pilots. However, analysing the battle from the German perspective reveals that the Germans contributed to their ultimate defeat in several ways. The German political leadership was indecisive, failing to identify a political end state to underpin military planning. Whilst German air doctrine was sound, Luftwaffe planning was incoherent and muddled, neglecting lessons learned in Spain, and was poorly supported by German intelligence. As a result, the Germans failed to adhere to 2 key principles of war: know your enemy and yourself, and select and maintain your aim. Consequently, the Luftwaffe was never likely to win the Battle of Britain.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

Strategic Culture in the Luftwaffe--Did it Exist in World War II and Has it Transitioned into the Air Force?

During the Second World War Luftwaffe fighter pilots scored an incredible number of victories, despite many comparative tangible inferiorities. Modern business theory suggests that an organisation's strategic culture can create competitive advantage that helps overcome such shortfalls. Using Johnson's contemporary 'Cultural Web' model, this paper shows that strategic culture often compensated for the overwhelming odds and dislocated leadership against which German fighter pilots had to operate. The article argues that some of the cultural strengths of the Second World War generation have permeated through to the modern Luftwaffe giving today's organisation individuality not shared by other air forces.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]

This article examines the conjuncture in the last decade of the political, economic, demographic and cultural forces in the USA that have facilitated the emergence of a complex identity category, the 'single mom' - a category that has come to stand for the failure of the welfare state and the purported possibilities of neo-liberal self-sufficiency as well as for the rearticulation of those conditions. The 'rationalities of government' that make freedom an increasingly difficult state for poor women to achieve are connected to the production of a set of 'practices of the self', in the form of cultural texts ranging from self-help literature to television and film that represent and advise single mothers on how to demonstrate their self-sufficiency and self-governance. It is argued that analysis of single mothers is a critical component of understanding current social conditions as they are played out in the USA in the realms of domesticity, family and mothering, realms often given short shrift in comparison to cultural studies' work on public cultures and spaces.

Dis-gnosis: Disney and the re-tooling of knowledge, art, culture, life, etc.

This essay was written in 2000, hence before 9/11, ***, the stock market crash and the War on Terror, each of which may well have modified and/or intensified elements in the configuration proposed below. In an earlier draft, the essay accompanied an exhibition of Disney-influenced art entitled 'Never Never Land', curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud. The exhibition was installed in 2000-2001 at art museums at Florida Atlantic University,. South Florida University and Rutgers. The show featured work by Jim Anderson, James Angus, Markus Baenziger, Bonnie Collura, Rico Gatson, Arturo Herrera, Colin Keefe, Tommy Kenny, Mary Magsamen, Melissa Marks, Jason Middlebrook, Michael Minelli, Daniel Mirer, Takashi Murikami, Stephen Pascher, Daniela Steinfield, Gabriele Stellbaum, Brian Tolle and Type A. Drawing alternately on the critical literature and fairy tales, the essay examines the integrated and integrative logics of, on the one hand, the Disney business plan and, on the other, the trademark Disney modes of narration. A broad range of 'disneyfied' effects are proposed on everything from work, retail and consumer culture to contemporary art and architecture. I argue that these effects are underpinned by a figuration and positioning of both childhood and 'innocence' that is consistent across the entire spectrum of Disney products/texts and which is global in its scope and implications. 'Disgnosis', a neologism coined for this essay, is related, though not reducible to sibling terms like ideology, mauvaise, foi, amnesia and false consciousness. Dis-gnosis refers to the putative 'knowledge' effect produced by the strategies, logics and inferred purposes that form the objects of study.
