This article focuses on reemergence of Kaliningrad in Russia. It is largely the demise of the two federal communist states, the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia, that brought about the reemergence of a kind of state entity that had not been heard of since the end of feudalism in Europe. Although 15 union republics of the Soviet Union became independent from the old center as well as from one another, some parts of the newly independent republics failed to fit into the new framework and emerged as separate or detached entities. The three Transcaucasian republics gave birth to four such entities. These are Nagorno-Karabagh in Azerbaijan and Abkhazia, Adjaria and Ossetia in Georgia.
