Mercury-hazards and forensic perspectives

Recently, I was invited to review the book Mercury—Hazards to LivingOrganisms by Ronald Eisler (2006), published by Taylor & Francis. The review provided an excellentinsight into the complex environmental issues posed by this unique element: mercury (Hg). Althoughnot written from a forensic perspective, the book provides valuable up-to-date information forassessing the sources and fate of mercury in nature. This is why I decided to dedicate thiseditorial to mercury, reviewing the information from Eisler''s book. A general overview is given aswell as discussion of the unique properties of Hg and related environmental issues, which providesthe setting for forensic review and discussions.

The author reflects on teaching the principle of innovation to surgical residents and faculty. He believes that an annual course of theoretical lectures dealing with innovation should be instituted in order to improve one's professional practice. The curriculum should include a series of books and papers about innovation. Innovation should also become a topic of frequent discussion.

The program is approved by both the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, and the Board of Certified Safety Professionals, which award Certification Maintenance (CM) points and Continuance of Certification (COC) points, respectively, for successful participation. Participants must read each issue of the Journal, answer “The Action Level”® questions, and return the completed answer sheet at the end of that issue's “The Action Level”® column. To earn the designated CM or COC credit, a score of 70 percent or better is required within a 12-month period. Certified Industrial Hygienists and Certified Associate Industrial Hygienists may earn 2 points per year. Certified Safety Professionals may earn 1.2 points per year. Enrollment is possible each month, but points are awarded only four times each year—in March, June, September, and December—to participants who score an average of 70% or better within each 3-month period. If you register in October 2006, you will recieve 0.5 CM point and/or 0.3 COC point after you have completed answers sheets for October, November, and December, 2006, and scored a 70 percent or better average on them (only in your first quarter of enrollment, if enrolling in the middle of the quarter, will you be permitted to submit answer sheets for two months and receive full credit; three answer sheets are required for all other quarters). In the next quarter, you'll receive 0.5 CM points and/or 0.3 COC

Osteonecrosis: what does it mean? One condition partly caused by bisphosphonates - or another one, preferably treated with them?

The author reflects about osteonecrosis, its meaning and the condition which partly caused by bisphosphonates. Both scientific and lay press admonished that osteonecrosis of the jaw is a condition which apparently related to cancer and chemotherapy in combination with bisphosphonates. In this essay, the author asserts that pathogenesis must engage an impaired immune system and a reduced bone resorption. Finally, the application of precise names for clinical condition are given more discussions.

Needle and syringe exchange programs in Amsterdam

The article focuses on making the needle and syringe exchange programs (NSEPs) in Amsterdam more effective. Amsterdam's needle and syringe exchange program reduced infections related to injection but did not increase incidents of intravenous drug use. Participation in the exchange program appears to be driven by financial motives. To come up with a structural change in risk behavior, a motivation to diminish one's risk is necessary. Thus, aside from NSEPs, intensive counseling and education are required.

The Church in St Ambrose of Milan

A brief account is given of the life of St Ambrose and of modern scholarly views on his work. The Church was favoured by the Emperor Constantine and Christianity established as the state religion by the Emperor Theodosius. Ambrose might have been expected to have been interested in promoting the interests of the Church as an institutional and juridical organisation but he was in fact overwhelmingly interested in its spiritual aspect, as von Campenhausen asserts, opposed by Morino. The Church is seen in Ambrose's writings as the City of God and as the Kingdom of God into which believers are received. His understanding of the Church is markedly christocentric and biblical and is closely linked with his thinking on the Holy Spirit. This article also examines his attitude to the see of Rome, of which he did not recognise a general supremacy. The relevance for Christians today of Ambrose's experience of the Church as a unique spiritual fellowship is touched on.

Dirty diapers and the new organic intellectual

This article examines the conjuncture in the last decade of the political, economic, demographic and cultural forces in the USA that have facilitated the emergence of a complex identity category, the 'single mom' - a category that has come to stand for the failure of the welfare state and the purported possibilities of neo-liberal self-sufficiency as well as for the rearticulation of those conditions. The 'rationalities of government' that make freedom an increasingly difficult state for poor women to achieve are connected to the production of a set of 'practices of the self', in the form of cultural texts ranging from self-help literature to television and film that represent and advise single mothers on how to demonstrate their self-sufficiency and self-governance. It is argued that analysis of single mothers is a critical component of understanding current social conditions as they are played out in the USA in the realms of domesticity, family and mothering, realms often given short shrift in comparison to cultural studies' work on public cultures and spaces.
