Using the Subaru 8.2 m Telescope with the IRCS Echelle spectrograph, we obtained high-resolution (R = 10,000) near-infrared (1.01-1.38 mu m) spectra of images A and B of the gravitationally lensed QSO B1422+231 (z = 3.628) consisting of four known lensed images. We detected Mg II absorption lines at z = 3.54, which show a large variance of column densities (similar to 0.3 dex) and velocities (similar to 10 km s(-1)) between sightlines A and B with a projected separation of only 8.4h(70)(-1) pc at that redshift. This is the smallest spatial structure of the high-z gas clouds ever detected after Rauch et al. found a 20 pc scale structure for the same z = 3.54 absorption system using optical spectra of images A and C. The observed systematic variances imply that the system is an expanding shell as originally suggested by Rauch et al. By combining the data for three sightlines, we managed to constrain the radius and expansion velocity of the shell (similar to 50-100 pc, 130 km s(-1)), concluding that the shell is truly a supernova remnant (SNR) rather than other types of shell objects, such as a giant H II region. We also detected strong Fe II absorption lines for this system, but with much broader Doppler width than that of alpha-element lines. We suggest that this Fe II absorption line originates in a localized Fe II-rich gas cloud that is not completely mixed with plowed ambient interstellar gas clouds showing other alpha-element low-ion absorption lines. Along with the Fe richness, we conclude that the SNR is produced by an SN Ia explosion.

BackgroundDermatofibrosarcomas protuberans is a challenging cutaneous tumor from an oncologic and reconstructive surgical point of view. Involvement of functionally and aesthetically sensitive areas, such as facial units, in young patients accounts for more demanding cases. An updated evaluation of most beneficial excisional/reconstructive strategies in these cases is still lacking. MethodsWe investigated the potential of regenerative dermal templates in staged postoncologic reconstructive management of a young woman affected by a dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans of the forehead involving the frontal bone. ResultsFinal result was optimal in terms of cosmetic and functional recovery, obtaining a pliability, softness, and color similar to surrounding healthy skin. ConclusionIn facial dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans, staged reconstruction with regenerative dermal templates provides a conservative yet safe and effective management, achieving optimal aesthetic outcomes. We suggest its adoption as first-line treatment in facial dermatofibrosarcomas protuberans that cannot be repaired by direct suture and in equivalent benign yet challenging cases. Case studies of judicial-political interaction during two periods, 1969-1976 in Germany and 1981-1985 in France, illustrate two general points about constitutional politics in both countries. First, constitutional courts are powerful policymakers whose impact on legislative processes and outcomes is multidimensional. These courts are more than simply negative legislators, empowered to veto legislative provisions. They also exercise creative legislative powers: to recast policy-making environments, to encourage certain legislative solutions while undermining others, and to have the precise terms of their decisions written directly into legislative provisions. Second, governments and parliamentarians are often led to behave judicially, to debate and make meaningful decisions about the constitutionality of legislation. In France and Germany, both the making of public policy and the construction of constitutional law are products of sustained and intimate judicial-political interaction.

Chloride penetration is an important factor of concrete durability, whereas chloride ions have the potential to be absorbed by layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Magnesium-aluminum-CO3 LDHs are used in this experiment, and chloride ion absorption in chloride solution and hardened cement paste is studied. Additionally, the chloride penetration behavior in concrete containing raw LDHs and calcined LDHs (CLDHs) is also studied. The results indicate that raw LDHs show lower chloride ion absorption ability and CLDHs can absorb chloride ions in cement paste to reconstruct the structure and reduce the chloride concentration. The addition of CLDHs absorbs the chloride ions in concrete to delay the penetration, which improves the chloride ion resistance of concrete.
