Due to its promising performance, deep hashing has become a prevalent method for approximate nearest neighbors search (ANNs). However, most of current deep hashing methods are validated on relatively small-scale datasets, leaving potential threats when are applied to large-scale real-world scenarios. Specifically, they can be constrained either by the computational cost due to the large number of training categories and samples, or unsatisfactory accuracy. To tackle those issues, we propose a novel deep hashing framework based on product quanti zation (PQ). It uses a softmax-based differentiable PQ branch to learn a set of predefined PQ codes of the classes. Our method is easy to implement, does not involve large-scale matrix operations, and learns highly discriminate compact codes. We validate our method on multiple large-scaled datasets, including ImageNet100, ImageNet1K, and Glint360K, where the category size scales from 100 to 360K and sample number scales from 10K to 17 million, respectively. This paper presents the importance of error resilience in still image coding in order to be able to transmit images over noisy channels. The motivation for error resilience is described as well as a presentation of the ongoing work on error resilience in the standardising of the next generation still image compression system, JPEG2000. As a case study we focus on some theoretical results obtained comparing the tradeoffs between re-transmission time, bit error rate (BER) and quality for typical mobile and wireless applications, showing the benefits of having an error resilient mode.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) contain sensor nodes powered by limited batteries. How to solve the tension between real-time reactivity to external events and energy saving for long lifetime is one major challenge. Duty cycle scheduling provides a method to balance the tension based on the application scenarios. However, time critical WSN applications often put strict requirements on both ends, quick response and long lifespan. In this paper, we propose a hardware invention called Smart Trigger to detect external events with ultralow power before activating the sensor node for precise measurements. By using passive transducers, the smart trigger consumes only a few microwatts and reacts to surrounding changes within one millisecond. Our solution consists of three generic modules which can be integrated into any kind of sensor nodes. We tested four types of passive transducers to monitor four typical environmental conditions. Our experimental results show high accuracy of detection and ultralow power consumption. Furthermore, we build a generic model to evaluate monitoring efficiency of duty cycle scheduling in comparison with environment triggering policy. We also describe a few WSN applications which can be automated by environment triggered sensor nodes. This paper presents an implementation of smart trigger and demonstrates significant energy saving in the model.

Computational feature recognition is an essential component for intelligent systems to sense the objects and environments. This paper proposes a novel conceptual model, named Ambiance Signal Processing (AmSiP), to identify objects' features when they are not directly accessible by sensors. AmSiP analyzes the surrounding and ambiance of objects/subjects collaboratively to recognize the object's features instead of concentrating on each individual and accessible object. To validate the proposed model, this study runs an experiment with 50 participants, whose emotional state variations are estimated by measuring the surroundings features and the emotions of other people in the same environment. The results of a t-Test on the data collected from this experiment showed that users' emotions were being changed in a course of time during the experiment;however, AmSiP could estimate subjects' emotions reliably according to the environmental characteristics and similar patterns. To evaluate the reliability and efficiency of this model, a collaborative affective computing system was implemented using keyboard keystroke dynamics and mouse interactions of the users whose emotions were affected by different types of music. In comparison with other conventional techniques (explicit access), the prediction was reliable. Although the developed model sacrifices a minor accuracy, it earns the superiority of uncovering blind knowledge about the subjects out of the sensors' direct access.

The fifth generation (5G) of cellular networks shall host a number of tenants and provide services tailored to meet a wide range of requirements in terms of performance, dependability and security. Network slicing will be a key enabler, by assigning dedicated resources and functionalities to meet such requirements, where the isolation between slices, i.e., that a slice may operate without interference from other slices, becomes a core issue. The objective of this paper is to give a thorough insight into the isolation concept, discuss the challenges involved in providing it, and outline the means available to provide various levels of isolation. Fundamental concepts that can be used in further work to build an isolation solution tailored to specific needs. This paper defines important concepts such as the Provider Management, the Tenant Management, and the Means of Isolation in the context of the Isolation Dimensions. The conclusion of the study is that dealing with isolation between slices needs extensions in state of the art on the mentioned concepts, and in how to tailor the isolation to meet the needs in a cost-efficiency manner.
