Depth information using the biological Disparity Energy Model can be obtained by using a population of complex cells. This model explicitly involves cell parameters like their spatial frequency, orientation, binocular phase and position difference. However, this is a mathematical model. Our brain does not have access to such parameters, it can only exploit responses. Therefore, we use a new model for encoding disparity information implicitly by employing a trained binocular neuronal population. This model allows to decode disparity information in a way similar to how our visual system could have developed this ability, during evolution, in order to accurately estimate disparity of entire scenes.

To study the access fairness in the DQDB (distributed queue dual bus) protocol of the IEEE 802.6 MAN (metropolitan area network), a generalized version of the protocol is considered. In the generalized version, the access control field of a slot contains multiple request bits (REQs), and each station uses multiple countdown counters up to a maximum number called the threshold. Simulation results show that with just one additional REQ over the original protocol, the channel capacity is allocated almost evenly among the stations. If the cumulative input rate does not exceed the channel capacity, the original protocol induces acceptably fair mean-waiting-time performance for both symmetric and asymmetric loads, and for long propagation delays. If the channel capacity is exceeded, the use of additional REQs and countdown counters can improve performance fairness.

Recently, broadband analog network coding (ANC) was introduced to utilize high-data rate transmission over the wireless - frequency selective fading - channel. However, ANC requires the knowledge of channel state information (CSI) for self-information removal and coherent signal detection. In this paper, we propose a two-slot pilot-assisted CE for bi-directional broadband ANC. In the first slot, two users transmit their respective pilots to the relay, where the users' pilot signals are designed to avoid the interference and consequently, allow the relay to estimate the CSIs from both users. During the second slot the relay broadcast its pilot signal to both users that estimate the corresponding CSIs. It was shown by computer simulation that, even with imperfect CSI, the BER performance of broadband ANC gives a satisfactory performance for a low and moderate mobile terminal speed in a frequency-selective fading channel.

Considerable attentions have been devoted recently to active vibration control using intelligent materials as sensors/actuators. This paper presents results on active control schemes for vibration suppression of flexible cantilever beam with bonded piezoelectric sensors and actuators. State equations which the generalized modal coordinates as variables are built. With the piezoelectric elements are surface-bonded near the same position to the fixed end of flexible cantilever beam, two active vibration control methods such as linear quadratic Gauss (LQG) optimal control and robust H infin control are investigated. Finally, the simulation results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control method in this paper, compared with the LQG control method, robust H infin control has strong robustness to modal parameters variation, and it has a good closed-loop dynamic performance, can suppress the vibration better at the circumstance of the system with uncertainty factors.

Real-time path planning is crucial to the dexterity of UAVs when traversing through environments with unknown obstacles. In this paper, we proposed such a real-time planning algorithm that can be used in cluttered environments. The real-time computation is achieved by using dimensionality reduction as well as the rolling optimization. We test the algorithm both in the Gazebo simulation and in two real experiments. The results show that our algorithm can maintain a relatively high speed flight while avoiding obstacles successfully.
