Periodic environmental changes are commonly observed in nature from the amount of daylight to seasonal temperature. These changes usually affect individuals' death or birth rates, dragging the system from its previous stable states. When the fluctuation of abundance is amplified due to such changes, extinction of species may be accelerated. To see this effect, we examine how the abundance and the mean time to extinction respond to the periodic environmental changes. We consider a population wherein two species coexist together implemented by three rules—birth, spontaneous death, and death from competitions. As the interspecific interaction strength is varied, we observe the resonance behavior in both fluctuations of abundances and the mean time to extinction. Our result suggests that neither too high nor too low competition rates make the system more susceptible to environmental changes.

Autoimmune neuropathies with autoantibodies against paranodal proteins have been described in the last few years. They comprise a subgroup of inflammatory neuropathies with IgG4 autoantibodies against the paranodal proteins neurofascin-155, contactin-1 and caspr-1. Although this subtype of autoimmune neuropathy represents less than 10% of all patients diagnosed with CIDP, it is of high interest as they show a different response to treatment. Even though there are no therapeutic studies available due to the limited number of patients identified so far, all case reports published so far report an excellent response to treatment with rituximab, and in most cases no response to treatment with IVIG, the standard therapy of CIDP. The typical clinical picture of patients with autoantibodies against paranodal proteins is characterized by an acute onset of a severe predominantly motor neuropathy, often accompanied by action tremor and sensory ataxia, with demyelinating features in the nerve conduction studies but an axonal histological phenotype. The latter may be explained by the pathogenetic concept of a paranodopathy/nodopathy, a disease of the paranode/node of Ranvier.

The present study was designed to examine experimentally the effects of butterfly fitting clearances and different adhesives on the load carrying abilities of the composite structures joined via a butterfly-shaped joining component and the fatigue performance of the specimens joined by the best joint style obtained. Experiment specimens and butterfly-shaped locking components were cut from a composite plate by means of water jet. Fatigue experiments were conducted at the constant load ratio and at different maximum fatigue loads. To compare the fatigue performance, the fatigue experiments of the butt joints were also carried out. According to the experiment results obtained, it was determined that fatigue strengths of adhesively-bonded butterfly joints have a longer life span than those of the bonded butt joints under the same circumstances. The present study has made it possible that with the use of butterfly joining component, the earliest damage should occur on the butterfly and should have a longer service life with the repairs of the butterfly joining component.

CrN films have been synthesized on Si(100) wafer by inductively coupled plasma (ICP)-enhanced radio frequency (RF) magnetron sputtering. The effects of ICP power on microstructure, crystal orientation, nanohardness and stress of the CrN films have been investigated. With the increase of ICP power, the current density at substrate increases and the films exhibit denser structure, while the DC self-bias of target and the deposition rate of films decrease. The films change from crystal structure to amorphous structure with the increase of ICP power. The measured nanohardness and the compressive stress of films reach the topmost at ICP power of 150 W and 200 W, respectively. The mechanical properties of films show strong dependence on the crystalline structure and the density influenced by the ICP power.

The molecular dimensions and electronic structures of 100 chemicals of structural diversity have been determined from molecular orbital calculations and molecular mechanics. From these parameters of molecular structure, those chemicals that are likely substrates of cytochromes P4501 and P4502E have been identified by the computer-optimized molecular parametric analysis of chemical toxicity (COMPACT) programme, and their potential toxicity, mutagenicity and carcinogenicity evaluated. The degree of correlation between COMPACT prediction of toxicity and rodent two species life-span carcinogenicity data is estimated to be 92%, and between COMPACT and Salmonella mutagenicity (Ames test) data is 64%. Anomalous rodent carcinogens are rationalized on the basis of biochemical mechanisms of metabolism, genotoxicity and carcinogenicity. Correlation of the Ames test data with rodent carcinogenicity data was 64%, but correlation of COMPACT plus Ames data versus rodent carcinogenicity data provided the highest correlation of 94%.
