This Great Ideas For Teaching (and Talking With) Students (GIFTS) paper presents a plan to promote diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and entrepreneurial-minded learning (EML) in first-year introduction to engineering classes. Curricular transformation is encouraged with the creation of new components within first year engineering courses to center and prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion in conjunction with entrepreneurial minded learning while teaching the design process. The curricular activities are guided by the Kern engineering Entrepreneurial Network (KEEN) framework which includes curiosity, connections, and creating value. A module was designed to improve students' exposure to DEI and EML in first year introductory engineering classes. This elicits a just worldview in students to consider multiple perspectives when designing for a diverse market. The module provides a plan for instructors to foster EML while teaching the design process. Educators are able to cultivate innovative students who seek opportunities to create value for individuals that belong to minoritized groups. Students in two first-year engineering classes used the design process to design a product and later considered the societal impact of their designs. Student teams created a plan and specified a problem definition, created concepts for possible designs, and then prototyped and tested a 3D part for an industry of their choice. Student groups then communicated the engineering solution in terms of the benefits during a gallery walk. Students presented a solution for the challenges and considerations necessary when designing for a diverse group of individuals/users. Student groups collaborated and communicated to the whole group about their motivations and perspectives for their design choices. The students then reflected on the possible value of their designs. This demonstration features a suite of experimental setups designed and developed for use in a first-year engineering course as part of their MATLAB instruction. Each experiment involves a portable data collection unit and baseline data collection software to enable initial interaction with the hardware. They purposefully showcase experimental setup and data collection as part of their MATLAB curriculum to learn the software in a setting and context more in-line with how they will use it in future courses. The suite currently contains hardware for collecting UV levels and GPS data, listening for signal transmission through a simulated noisy environment, recording hand-eye reaction times based on randomized stimuli, and a desktop mechanical stress test. The hardware enables students to collect the specific data they need for each experiment, containing all sensors and other necessary components in a rugged and compact self-contained unit. The size is such that they can easily transport to perform their experiments where convenient, like their dorm rooms. The cost of each averaged to less than $25 per student per group by taking advantage of low-cost systems like Arduino and rapid prototyping options typically available in most academic settings. Since the educational objective is to develop their skill and understanding in MATLAB, module assessment focuses on the quality of the scripts developed to analyze the collected data, not the quality of the experimentation or understanding of the underlying concepts. Those elements are heavily scaffolded though through provided software that: • guides them through the experimental runs • uploads their data point(s) to a database • downloads the class dataset from that database Students then apply their MATLAB lessons to organize and analyze the dataset by eliminating noise and extraneous data and visualization of findings. © American Society for engineering Education, 2022.

There are critical conversations happening right now around Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in engineering professions and engineering educational settings. Educational settings need to prepare students to collaborate with diverse populations in their engineering workplace. DEI concepts can be incorporated in first-year engineering curriculum to enhance student design and exposure to diverse cultures during this unique design for additive manufacturing (DfAM) teaching module. This paper describes the development of a DfAM workshop that incorporates historical and cultural themes. Students' perception of the design experience will be measured using an engineering self-efficacy validated tool, pre- and post-workshop survey, and measured design outcomes (CAD model) after engaging in a DfAM workshop. The workshop uses activities guided by the Kern engineering Entrepreneurial Network (KEEN) framework which includes curiosity, connections, and creating value. The workshop introduces the entrepreneurial-minded learning (EML) with DEI efforts through the design prompt. It is beneficial to make connections from historical designs to inspire novel approaches to design opportunities. Reflecting on individual's unique designs and their individual influences from historical approaches can bring awareness. It can be difficult to initiate conversations around DEI, especially in engineering design classrooms. The incorporation of DEI in this DfAM workshop helps to naturally coach students to engage in an inclusive classroom environment where they feel an increased sense of belonging and become more socially aware of others differing cultures by talking about one's own unique background with classmates. This workshop spearheads discussions on diversity, equity, and inclusion focused on engineering design. Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness, affecting millions of people worldwide. It is a chronic eye condition that damages the optic nerve and, if left untreated, can lead to vision loss and a decreased quality of life. Therefore, there is a need to explore practical and reliable mechanisms for glaucoma identification. This study systematically reviews deep-learning approaches for glaucoma identification using retinal fundus images from 2018 to 2024. Compared to existing survey studies, we cover the latest research, including several public retinal fundus image datasets, and focus on segmentation, classification based on convolutional neural networks and vision transformers, and explainability. The findings of this study, including comparisons of existing methods and key insights, will assist researchers and developers in identifying the most suitable techniques for glaucoma detection. © 2025 The Authors

Introduction: Pancreatic cancer (PC) remains a challenging malignancy, and adjuvant chemotherapy is critical in improving patient survival post-surgery. However, the intrinsic heterogeneity of PC necessitates personalized treatment strategies, highlighting the need for reliable preclinical models. Objectives: This study aimed to develop novel patient-derived preclinical PC models using three-dimensional bioprinting (3DP) technology. Methods: Patient-derived PC models were established using 3DP technology. Genomic and histological analyses were performed to characterize these models and compare them with corresponding patient tissues. Chemotherapeutic drug sensitivity tests were conducted on the PC 3DP models, and correlations with clinical outcomes were analyzed. Results: The study successfully established PC 3DP models with a modeling success rate of 86.96%. These models preserved genomic and histological features consistent with patient tissues. Drug sensitivity testing revealed significant heterogeneity among PC 3DP models, mirroring clinical variability, and potential correlations with clinical outcomes. Conclusion: The PC 3DP models demonstrated their utility as reliable preclinical tools, retaining key genomic and histological characteristics. Importantly, drug sensitivity profiles in these models showed potential correlations with clinical outcomes, indicating their promise in customizing treatment strategies and predicting patient prognoses. Further validation with larger patient cohorts is warranted to confirm their potential clinical utility. © 2024

Perovskite materials are essential to materials science because they may be used in both theoretical as well as experimental investigations. The hydride perovskite Cs 3 Sb 2 H 9 based on cesium is computed in this work by utilizing a density functional theory. The current compound has a trigonal structure with 164 (P-3m1) space groups and is constructed on the Cambridge-serial-total-energy-package program by using generalized gradient-approximation and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional. According to the results, the structural characteristics indicate that Cs 3 Sb 2 H 9 has a semiconductor and indirect bandgap of 0.81 eV. The structure stability is confirmed by the compound Cs 3 Sb 2 H 9 formation energy (−2.906 eV/atom), cohesive energy (2.906 eV/atom), electron density difference, and tolerance factor (0.87). The partial density of states and density of states validate the extent of electron localization in discrete bands. By fitting the damping ratio for the hypothetical dielectric function scaling to the proper peaks, the optical transitions are investigated. The compound's strong conductivity and absorption make it ideal for hydrogen storage applications, which boost productivity and function. Cs 3 Sb 2 H 9 compound is novel and achieved a better gravimetric hydrogen quantity percentage of about 3.438 wt percent. We found that the Cs 3 Sb 2 H 9 has potential applications in the fields of sustainable optoelectronics and hydrogen storage devices.

This NSF S-STEM Grantee poster examines the results of Rice University's summer science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) bridge program, the Rice Emerging Scholars program (RESP), on participants' introductory chemistry grades in a quasi-experimental design that compared performance of participants in RESP, a control group with similar preparation as RESP participants, and the remaining students in the class. The outcome of interest was first and second-semester chemistry exam performance. The researchers also examined performance on first-semester exam items that directly tested concepts taught in RESP versus concepts that were not taught during the program, as well as class grade distribution by group for both first and second-semester chemistry. Results showed that engaging in RESP enhanced performance on items that directly assessed content taught in the program but did not significantly improve performance on items not taught in RESP. However, the proportion of students in RESP earning As and Bs was no different from other students in the class during the first semester. Although not all results were significant, trends in the data point to the promise of RESP. Implications for near and far learning transfer as a result of program participation are discussed. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.

This paper describes evidence based approach to update a first-year engineering course project to meet more educational best practices. In fall 2014 and fall 2015, the first-year engineering course at a medium-sized, Midwestern, private university implemented a new design project in the first-year engineering course sequence. Learning objectives for the project include introducing the engineering design process, working with uncertainty in the design process, and improving teaming/communication skills. In this project, students were tasked with designing a platform that could support three specified loads with additional requirements for the height of floats that could be submerged under each condition. The students had several weeks to determine a design based solely on simple modelling equations and the explicit loading and size requirements. They additionally had to consider the implicit requirements of the system, including stability of the structure, waterproofing, and appearance. Student groups exploited computational tools for their design by creating an engineering drawing in Creo Parametric for visualization and by developing equations and an expected performance plot in Microsoft EXCEL for analyzing their system. Finally, they were able to build and demonstrate their platforms using course purchased construction materials which included: poster board, shipping tape, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, and a handful of other similar products. Some positive traits of the project include: (1) The modelling equations are simple and do not require physics or calculus knowledge to design the system, so they are appropriate for first-semester students. However, finding a solution to the project is not trivial for a first-year student. (2) The design requirements can be structured to allow for many different designs or more highly constrained to force an outcome of more specific designs. (3) The cost of materials needed for the project is relatively low and all materials

This work in progress paper will evaluate the inclusion of video instruction into the laboratory sections of a first-year engineering design course. It aims to improve student performance on activity-based team projects and address strategies for adding innovative flipped classroom approaches into hands-on courses. Video instruction has the potential to combine multiple learning styles in pre-class preparation material. This video teaching methodology for laboratory instructions and assignments provides needed information to students before they attempt the labs or use equipment to expedite the learning process. A first-year engineering program initiative to incorporate more flipped classroom resources began this last summer with the help of an on-campus support center for teaching and learning. This paper will focus on aspects of short, five to ten minute, video instruction that can be used to improve performance in hands-on design projects and labs. Many video projects performed by engineering educators focus on moving in-class lectures to hours of video. In a class that is primarily activity-based, different strategies should be used to add video instruction for equipment, software, and concepts. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.

This evaluation paper discusses the design of a new six week course in the Cooper Union Summer science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) program for high school students. Existing courses in the program focused on a single engineering discipline (electrical, chemical, mechanical, or civil) with well-defined projects chosen by the professor. The new course focused on open-ended engineering design and multidisciplinary entrepreneurship. Most courses at the high school level utilize a clear design goal so that students can spend their time in design of a solution and construction. However, there are clear advantages to introducing open ended design to students earlier, including addressing the ABET Criteria parts e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems and h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.1It has also been shown that students' intrinsic motivations in the design of a project can inspire further engagement in engineering. The procedure for creating the course materials and methods of instruction are discussed, as well as student project results and a qualitative and quantitative assessment of the course. © American Society for engineering Education, 2016.
