Understanding the effect of cathodic reaction on corrosion-enhanced erosion in sand-entraining electrolyte

In this study,the pure erosion behaviour of pure iron and its erosion-corrosion behaviour under different anodic polarization currents were investigated in various cathodic reactions(oxygen reduction,hydrogen ion reduction,and water reduction)using a cylindrical stirring *** corrosion-enhanced erosion(C-E)rates were determined for each *** results revealed that pure iron displayed similar pure erosion behaviour across all three cathodic *** the cathodic reactions involve hydrogen ion reduction or water reduction,the erosion-corrosion of pure iron manifested as uniform damage,with the reduction in hardness being the main cause of the C-E in this ***,in the case of oxy-gen reduction reaction as the cathodic reaction,the erosion-corrosion presented as pitting damage,with the reduction in hardness resulting from localized concentration of anodic current and the formation of easily worn protruding flaky iron structures at the edges of the pits as the main mechanism of the ***,linear and exponential relationships were found between the C-E rate and the anodic current density for uniform damage and pitting damage,***,the concept of surface equivalent hardness was proposed,along with the establishment of a mathematical model for surface equivalent hardness based on the relationships between the C-E rate and the anodic current *** the surface equivalent hardness enables the evaluation of the erosion rate on material surfaces considering the coupled effect.

A Secure Mutual Authentication Protocol Based on Visual Cryptography Technique for IoT-Cloud

Because of the increasing number of threats in the IoT cloud, an advanced security mechanism is needed to guard data against hacking or attacks. A user authentication mechanism is also required to authenticate the user accessing the cloud services. The conventional cryptographic algorithms used to provide security mechanisms in cloud networks are often vulnerable to various cyber-attacks and inefficient against new attacks. Therefore,developing new solutions based on different mechanisms from traditional cryptography methods is required to protect data and users' privacy from attacks. Different from the conventional cryptography method, we suggest a secure mutual authentication protocol based on the visual cryptography technique in this paper. We use visual cryptography to encrypt and decrypt the secret images. The mutual authentication is based on two secret images and *** user requests the ticket from the authentication server(AS) to obtain the permission for accessing the cloud services. Three shared secret keys are used for encrypting and decrypting the authentication process. We analyze the protocol using the Barrows-Abadi-Needham(BAN)-logic method and the results show that the protocol is robust and can protect the user against various attacks. Also, it can provide a secure mutual authentication mechanism.

Constructing uniform design tables based on restart discrete dynamical evolutionary algorithm

Generating uniform design tables (UDTs) is the first step to experimenting efficiently and effectively, and is also one of the most critical steps. Thus, the construction of uniform design tables has received much attention over the past decades. This paper presents a new algorithm for constructing uniform design tables: restart discrete dynamical evolutionary algorithm (RDDE). This algorithm is based on a well-designed dynamical evolutionary algorithm and utilizes discrete rounding technology to convert continuous variables into discrete variables. Considering the optimization of UDT is a multi-objective optimization problem, RDDE uses Friedman rank to select the optimal solution with better comprehensive comparison ranking. RDDE also utilizes a simulated annealing-based restart technology to select control parameters, thereby increasing the algorithm's ability to jump out of local optima. Comparisons with state-of-the-art UDTs and two practical engineering examples are presented to verify the uniformity of the design table constructed by RDDE. Numerical results indicate that RDDE can indeed construct UDTs with excellent uniformity at different levels, factors, and runs. Especially, RDDE can flexibly construct UDTs with unequal intervals of factors that cannot be directly processed by other designs of experiment. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Effect of boundary conditions on shakedown analysis of heterogeneous materials

The determination of the ultimate load-bearing capacity of structures made of elastoplastic heterogeneous materials under varying loads is of great importance for engineering analysis and design. Therefore, it is necessary to accurately predict the shakedown domains of these materials. The static shakedown theorem, also known as Melan's theorem, is a fundamental method used to predict the shakedown domains of structures and materials. Within this method, a key aspect lies in the construction and application of an appropriate self-equilibrium stress field(SSF). In the structural shakedown analysis, the SSF is typically constructed by governing equations that satisfy no external force(NEF) boundary conditions. However, we discover that directly applying these governing equations is not suitable for the shakedown analysis of heterogeneous materials. Researchers must consider the requirements imposed by the Hill-Mandel condition for boundary conditions and the physical significance of representative volume elements(RVEs). This paper addresses this issue and demonstrates that the sizes of SSFs vary under different boundary conditions, such as uniform displacement boundary conditions(DBCs), uniform traction boundary conditions(TBCs), and periodic boundary conditions(PBCs). As a result, significant discrepancies arise in the predicted shakedown domain sizes of heterogeneous materials. Built on the demonstrated relationship between SSFs under different boundary conditions, this study explores the conservative relationships among different shakedown domains, and provides proof of the relationship between the elastic limit(EL) factors and the shakedown loading factors under the loading domain of two load vertices. By utilizing numerical examples, we highlight the conservatism present in certain results reported in the existing literature. LOL: a highly flexible framework for designing stream ciphers

In this paper, we propose LOL, a general framework for designing blockwise stream ciphers. The proposed framework achieves ultrafast software implementations for ubiquitous virtual networks in 5G/6G environments and high-security levels for post-quantum cryptography. The LOL framework is structurally strong; furthermore, this framework and all its components enjoy high flexibility with various extensions. On the basis of the LOL framework, we propose new stream-cipher designs called LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE with the support of the AES-NI and single instruction multiple data instructions. The former applies the basic LOL single mode, while the latter uses the extended parallel-dual mode. LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE support 256-bit key length. Our thorough evaluations revealed that these cipher designs have 256-bit security margins against all existing cryptanalysis methods, including differential, linear, and integral. The software performances of LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE can reach 89 and 135 Gbps. In addition to pure encryptions,the LOL-MINI and LOL-DOUBLE stream ciphers can be applied in a stream-cipher-then-MAC strategy to make AEAD schemes.

Railway ballast is easily contaminated by different fouling material and the fouled ballast always causes the deterioration of railway *** previous studies focused on the effect of a certain kind of fouling material on ballast performance,but few studies compared the influence of different fouling *** paper presents a series of direct shear tests on the clean ballast and the fouled ballast mixed with coal fines or sand to understand the effects of different fouling material.A unified empirical model is proposed to well capture the shear stress-displacement responses of the clean and fouled *** equations are also obtained to characterize the variation of the nonlinear shear strength envelope of the fouled ballast with the fouling *** on these equations,a simple method is proposed to predict the shear strength of the fouled ballast using the shear test results of clean *** measured results demonstrate significant differences between the effects of coal fines and sand on the shear behaviors of ballast,to which particular attention should be paid in order to take targeted maintenance measures for the fouled *** mechanisms for the different effects of coal fines and sand are also analyzed to understand the roles that various fouling material plays in the fouled ballast.
