This paper reports the bacteriological examination data of 49 cases of perforated appendicitis in children(1980~1983);together with a comparison of the incidence of complications with the administration of *** methods of sample collection and examination are also *** bacteriological cultures showed that 47 samples were positive(95.9%)with 46 samples aerobic(93.8%).There were 75 aerobic strains obtained;mostly Gram negative bacilli and Gram positive *** were largely *** and various streptococcal strains.39 samples were anaerobic organisms(79.6%)consisting of 51 strains;most being Gram negative bacilli;especially bacteroides *** infection of aerobic and anae robic rganisms amounted to 38 cases(77.5%).The cultured *** were found relatively susceptible to gentamycin and kanamycin while bacteroides fragilis were highly susceptible to chloramphenicol;rifampin and *** 92 cases in this series all received a 5-day routine therapy of ampicillin;gentamycin and metronidazole after appendectomy followed by intraperitoneal *** incidence of postoperative complications remarkably dropped from previous 20.21% down to 7.61%;especially that of the infectious *** incidence of residual intraperitoneal infection or abscess was only 2:92 opposed to 10:94 In the 4 preceding *** proved the effectiveness of metronidazole in preventing anaerobic bacterial infections after appendectomy.
