According to etiology,pain can be generally divided into two types:nociceptive pain(NCP) and neuropathic pain(NPP).NCP is caused by tissue injury accompanied by local inflammatory responses and characterized by gain or increase in afferentation;while NPP is recently redefined by NeuPSIG as " pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system" and characterized by loss or decrease in afferentation(deafferentation).The hippocampal formation(HF ) is well known to be involved in learning and memory,however,so far less is known about its roles in processing of *** this presentation,Ⅰwill introduce how the HF is involved in pain *** entorhinal-hippocampal synaptic circuits are direct connections between the entorhinal cortex and the HF comprising of entorhinal-dentate gyrus(DG) and entorhinal-CA1 synaptic *** the NCP condition caused by subcutaneous bee venom injection, both entorhinal-DG and entorhinal-CA1 synaptic connections are functionally enhanced,including spatial network expansion and increase in LTP induction rate but accompanied by decrease in LTD induction ***, under NPP condition caused by spared nerve injury,the induction rate of LTP is significantly decreased with that of LTD ***,pre-block treatment could not prevent the NPP-associated plastic changes in synaptic efficacy,while the same treatment was effective in prevention of NCP-associated plastic changes in synaptic *** together,the entorhinal-hippocampal synaptic circuits are differentially changed by NCP afferentation and NPP deafferentation,these results may provide with a new synaptic model for unraveling the mechanisms that underlie the two types of pain and shed new light on the therapeutic strategy.
