Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by cognitive decline and dementia The typical neuropathological changes are extracellular amyloid plaques and intracellular neurofibrillary tangles of patients’ brain The main component of the former is β amyloid peptide degraded abnormally from β amyloid precursor protein, the latter is the aggregation of Tau protein which is phosphorylated highly There are some hypotheses about its pathogenesis at every aspect from cellular to molecular level Mitochondria, which acts as a half autonomous organella and a cytological energy producing factory, can form free radical and produce oxidative stress, also it can devastate intracellular calcium homeostasis, induce cell apoptosis and accelerate aging.
