Apolipoprotein A Ⅰ, the major protein component of the HDL, exerts its important function during modulating the metabolism of lipids in the plasma. Animal experiments have established that high concentration of the apo A Ⅰ not only inhibits the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, but also makes the preexisting atherosclerotic lesions regress. The most accepted mechanism is reverse cholesterol transport(RCT). It may become a new non traumatic therapy that the atherosclerosis is prevented and treated by the purified or recombinant human apolipoprotein A Ⅰ.
