Hypsizygus marmoreus(Peck) H.E. Bigelow is an important industrialized mushroom in Asia, yet the lack of basic research on this fungus has hindered further development of its economic value. Research on gaseous hydrogen has progressed from focusing on its role as a fuel to its role as matter that is able to regulate biological and pharmacological functions. For instance, hydrogen-rich water(HRW) inhibited glucose-and α, β-dicarbonyl compound-induced ROS production in rat kidney homogenates in vitro(Katakura et al. 2012). HRW also significantly decreased the ROS content, maintained the biomass and polar growth morphology of mycelium, and decreased secondary metabolism in G. lucidum under HAc-induced oxidative stress(Ren et al. 2016). However, there is no research to date on the effects of HRW on H. marmoreus mycelial growth and fruiting body *** the vegetative stage, HRW was firstly employed to characterize physiological roles and molecular mechanisms of H2 in the alleviation of three different stresses in basidiomycete H. marmoreus. Our results showed that HRW treatment, of which the H2 concentration was 0.8 m M, significantly reduced the toxicities of CdCl2, Na Cl and H2 O2, leading to significantly improved mycelial growth and biomass. These beneficial effects could be attributed to a significantly decreased formation of malondialdehyde(MDA). Besides, HRW treatment significantly increased the activities of antioxidants(SOD, CAT and GR) as well as the gene expressions of these antioxidants(SOD, CAT, and GR) at the m RNA level. At the reproductive stage, mycelia injured by scratching were treated with HRW to investigate the involvement of the redox system in fruiting body *** to the control group, damaged mycelia treated with HRW regenerated earlier and showed significantly enhanced fruiting body production. Antioxidant capacity increased significantly in damaged mycelia after HRW treatment, as indicated by higher antioxidant enzyme activit
