Iodine confined in single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs)exhibits novel structural properties. Iodine molecules adopt electrons from SWNTs to form charged polyiodide chains In(n=3,5…),and interestingly, the polyiodide chains array in the form of single, double or triple helical structures inside different diameters of SWNTs. We investigated the structural transition of iodine confined in SWNTs using Raman spectroscopy. The results show that charged polyiodide chains in SWNTs transform into iodine molecules with temperature increasing, while the reverse process occurs when the temperature decreases. Due to this reversible transition is accompanied by electron transfer between iodine and SWNTs,iodine filled SWNTs provides an approach to modulate the electronic band structure of SWNTs via varying temperatures. This may have some applications in nano-electroniCS based on carbon nanotubes with specific properties.
