We investigated the fabrication of self-assembled monolayers of 5,10,15,20-tetra-(p-methonphenyl)porphyrin metal hydroxyl compound(MTPPOH; M=Ho, Yb) on amino-terminated quartz surfaces by mesns of UV-Vis spectrum and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The results indicate that the central metal is crucial in the formation of the self-assembled porphyrin films.

A novel ultrasensitive detection in a small volume of a low refractive index liquid via Surface enhanced Raman scattering(SERS)-active liquid core waveguide is described. The liquid core waveguide demonstrated was constructed by using the light-guiding silica capillary modified with SERS-active nanoparticles on the inner surface of the fiber wall. The Raman signal of the sample can be remarkably enhanced by the immobilized Ag nanoparticles. The laser and SERS scattering from the flowing liquid in the core possess the totally reflective waveguide model within the fiber wall. Thus, the sample dissolved in the low refractive index liquid, e.g. methanol, can be quantitatively monitored by Raman spectra in the liquid core cell and the detection limit can reach 10 -8 mol/L.

Cross linked polystyrene microspheres with quarternary ammonium have been prepared via surfactant\|free emulsion polymerization. It was confirmed that the sizes of the microspheres decreased at a certain extent when the contents of the initiator,cross linked reagent or functional monomer were *** observation indicated that the size of polymer microspheres ranged from tens of nanometer to hundreds of nanometer. The XPS results showed that the hydrophilic quarternary ammonium groups tended to be rich on the surface of the microspheres during the *** addition,their swelling ratio can be investigated by using the “ in situ" swelling measurement of polymer microspheres.

We have found that the silver colloids, which usually used as SERS active substrate, are inclined to aggregation on air water interface and forming a two dimension silver particle films. The formed silver particle films exhibit much higher surface Raman enhancement factor than silver colloids, and the power used on silver particle films is only about 1% of that on silver colloids. Combining with resonance Raman enhancement technique, we realize single molecular Raman detection under the common conditions by using this silver particle films as SERS active substrate.

A bolaform amphiphile(BP-15) bearing biphenyl group and long spacers of alkyl chains was synthesized. In-situ AFM studies indicate that the amphiphile can form two kinds of surface aggregates with different morphologies depending on solution concentration: short-range ordered cylindrical surface micelles at the lower concentration and flat domains at the higher concentration. These results agree well with the two critical micelle concentrations in bulk solution as determined by the concentration-dependent conductivity.
