A large network delay is likely to obstruct human interaction in telecommunication systems such as telephony or video conferencing systems. In spite of the extensive investigations that have been carried out on network delays of voice and image data, there have been few studies regarding support for embodied communication under the conditions of network delay. To maintain smooth human interaction, it is important that the various ways in which delay is manifested are understood. We have already developed an embodied virtual communication system that uses an avatar called "VirtualActor," in which speakers who are remotely located from one another can share embodied interaction in the same virtual space. Responses to a questionnaire that was used in a communication experiment confirmed that a fixed 500-ms network delay has no effect on interactions via VirtualActors. In this paper, we propose a method of presenting a speaker's voice and an avatar's motion feedback in the case of a 1.5-s network delay using VirtualActors. We perform two communication experiments under different conditions of network delay. The aim of the first experiment is to examine the effect of a random time delay on the conversation. The second experiment is conducted under the conditions of a free-form conversation that takes place in 5 scenarios—1.realtime scenario without a network delay and 4 scenarios with network delay that involve a combination of a delay in the talker's voice and in his/her avatar's motion feedback. The subjects consisted of a total of 30 students who worked in 1. pairs and who were familiar with each other. A sensory evaluation shows the effects upon communication of delays in the avatar's motion feedback, from the viewpoint of supporting the interaction.

In this paper, a method for hand posture recognition, which is robust for hand posture changing in an actual environment, is proposed. Conventionally, a data glove device and a 3D scanner have been used for the feature extraction of hand shape. However, the performance of each approach is affeected by hand posture changing. Therefore, this paper proposes the posture fluctuation model for efficient hand posture recognition, based on 3D hand shape and color feature obtained from a stereo camera. A large set of dictionary for posture recognition is built by various leaned hand images which were auto-created from one scanned hand image, based on plural proposed models. In order to show the effectiveness of proposed method, performance and processing times for posture recognition are compared to conventional method. In addition, we perform the evaluation experiment by using the Japanese sign language. © 201. IEEE.

Urea monitor based on chemiluminescence and electrolysis as a marker for dialysis efficiency

We have developed a practical urea monitor based on a chemiluminescent (CL) reaction of urea and hypobromous acid produced by electrolysis of sodium bromide (NaBr) for measuring urea concentration in spent dialysate at set intervals. A reagent containing 4×1.-2 M hypobromous acid is produced by electrolysis of an electrolyte containing 5.9 M NaBr and 0.2 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Chemiluminescence is emitted by injection of spent hemodialysis fluid (0.1. ml) into the reagent, and the CL-intensity is measured by a photomultiplier tube using the photon counting technique. The CL-intensity is proportional to the 0.9th power of the urea concentration between 7×1.-4 and 2×1.-2 M. The urea monitor can determine the urea concentration in spent dialysate samples collected from the waste line of a dialyzer, and the time for the intermittent measurements including the cleaning cycle of the reaction chamber is 3 min. The urea concentrations measured by the monitor are in close agreement with those measured by the conventional enzyme colorimetric method using urease for the spent dialysate collected during a hemodialysis treatment, and the correlation coefficient is 0.93. © 201. the Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

In this paper, an appearance based image processing method is proposed for target detection, posture estimation, and tracking of 3D objects by Parametric Eigenspace Method embedded particle filter. In this method, the computational cost of Parametric Eigenspace Method and the tracking error can be greatly reduced by using the outputs of previous time and the preliminary knowledge of dynamics of movement of targets for a particle filter. Namely, since the particles of the particle filter can be generated in the direction where the object will be moved by using the posture estimated by Parametric Eigenspace Method for the prediction model, the accuracy of the state estimation of the object can be improved without increasing the number of particles. Therefore, the proposed method uses output result of Particle Filters and Parametric Eigenspace Method recursively and mutually for fast simultaneous execution of detection, posture estimation, and tracking of the targets. Furthermore, we demonstrate validity of our approach by several experiments. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

Microdevices have recently been developed by various micromachining technologies such as laser cutting, lithography, etc. PTFE is widely used as a microwave and millimeter-wave material. However, it is known that PTFE is too difficult to process with high precision by conventional machining, or even by laser cutting or electrical discharge machining. It has been reported that PTFE microstructures can be fabricated by direct exposure to synchrotron radiation. In this paper, the SR direct etching of PTFE is introduced and a trial fabrication of millimeter-wave PTFE-filled waveguide by sputter deposition of metal is attempted. © 2009 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

OLFAR, Orbiting Low Frequency Antennas for Radio Astronomy, will be a space mission to observe the universe frequencies below 30 MHz, as it was never done before with an orbiting telescope. Because of the ionospheric scintillations below 30 MHz and the opaqueness of the ionosphere below 1. MHz, a space mission is the only opportunity for this as yet unexplored frequency range in radio astronomy. The frequency band is scientifically very interesting for exploring the early cosmos at high hydrogen redshifts, the so-called dark-ages and the epoch of reionization, the discovery of planetary and solar bursts in other solar systems, for obtaining a tomographic view of space weather, ultra-high energy cosmic rays and for many other astronomical areas of interest. Because of the low observing frequency the aperture size of the instrument must be in the order of 1.0 km. This requires a distributed space mission which is proposed to be implemented using formation flying of small satellites. The individual satellites are broken down in five major subsystems: the spacecraft bus, the antenna design, the frontend, backend and data transport. One of the largest challenges is the inter-satellite communication. In this paper the concept and design considerations of OLFAR are presented.

Lightpath reconfiguration management system has been designed and implemented for IP-over-CWDM networks with ROADMs. The system can search possible lightpaths made by ROADMs with specified switch states. The function is based on an equivalent graph method proposed for representing the ROADMs, and can output lightpaths in the network together with the total loss values. The system enables the network administrators to manage the lightpath reconfigurations effectively without errors by avoiding making unlinked lightpaths through routes with higher losses to connect nodes, before the reconfiguration. ©2009 IEEE.

For a species to develop in nature basically two things are needed: An enabling technology and a "niche". In spacecraft design the story is the same. Both a suitable technology and a niche application need to be there before a new generation of spacecraft can be developed. In the last century two technologies have emerged which had and still have a huge impact on the development of technical systems: Micro-Electronics (ME) and Micro-systems Technology (MST). Many different terrestrial systems have changed dramatically since the introduction of ME and MST and many new systems have emerged. In the same period many nano-satellites have been built and launched and shown that they can perform in space. Still it is not clear what the specific role of these small satellites will be. Where will they go? What will they do?.

The current software development environment has been changing into new development paradigms such as concurrent distributed development environment and the so-called open source project by using network computing technologies. New distributed development paradigm typified by such open source project will evolve at a rapid pace in the future. Especially, OSS (Open Source Software) systems which serve as key components of critical infrastructures in the society are still ever-expanding now. We focus on OSS developed under open source project. In this paper, we propose a software reliability growth model based on stochastic differential equations in order to consider the active state of the open source project. Especially, we assume that the software failure intensity depends on the time, and the software fault-report phenomena on the bug tracking system keep an irregular state. Also, we analyze actual software fault count data to show numerical examples of software reliability assessment for the OSS. Moreover, it has been necessary to manage the software development process in terms of reliability, effort, and version-upgrade time. In this paper, we find the optimal total version-upgrade time based on the total expected software maintenance effort. We show that the proposed model can assist improvement of quality for OSS systems developed under the open source project. © 2008 ICQR.

This paper presents a remotely accessible Telecom Intelligent Network (IN) simulator, centered on the Basic Call State Mode (BCSM). This model is a Finite State Machine which describes the behavior of IN services in the call processing. The simulator is dedicated to the students in Telecom and allows them to get acquainted with the operation of the IN Service Control Point (SCP) in different scenarios they can imagine.
