License plate recognition plays a critical role in many practical applications, but license plates of large vehicles are difficult to be recognized due to the factors of low resolution, contamination, low illumination, and occlusion, to name a few. To overcome the above factors, the transportation management department generally introduces the enlarged license plate behind the rear of a vehicle. However, enlarged license plates have high diversity as they are non-standard in position, size, and style. Furthermore, the background regions contain a variety of noisy information which greatly disturbs the recognition of license plate characters. Existing works have not studied this challenging problem. In this work, we first address the enlarged license plate recognition problem and contribute a dataset containing 9342 images, which cover most of the challenges of real scenes. However, the created data are still insufficient to train deep methods of enlarged license plate recognition, and building large-scale training data is very time-consuming and high labor cost. To handle this problem, we propose a novel task-level disentanglement generation framework based on the Disentangled Generation Network (DGNet), which disentangles the generation into the text generation and background generation in an end-to-end manner to effectively ensure diversity and integrity, for robust enlarged license plate recognition. Extensive experiments on the created dataset are conducted, and we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach in three representative text recognition frameworks. © 2022, CC BY.

Prediction of protein–protein interaction (PPI) types enhances the comprehension of the underlying structural characteristics and functions of proteins, which gives rise to a multi-label classification problem. The nominal features describe the physicochemical characteristics of proteins directly, establishing a more robust correlation with the interaction types between proteins than ordered features. Motivated by this, we propose a multi-label PPI prediction model referred to as CoMPPI (Co-training based Multi-label prediction of Protein–Protein Interaction). This approach aims to maximize the utility of both ordered and nominal features extracted from protein sequences. Specifically, CoMPPI incorporates graph convolutional network (GCN) and 1. convolution operation to process the complementary subsets of features individually, leveraging both local and contextualized information in a more efficient way. In addition, two multi-type PPI datasets were constructed to eliminate the duplication in previous datasets. We compare the performance of CoMPPI with three state-of-the-art methods on three datasets partitioned using distinct schemes (Breadth-first search, Depth-first search, and Random), CoMPPI consistently outperforms the other methods across all cases, demonstrating improvements ranging from 3.81. to 32.40% in Micro-F1. The subsequent ablation experiment confirms the efficacy of employing the co-training framework for multi-label PPI prediction, indicating promising avenues for future advancements in this domain. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Hand hygiene is a standard six-step hand-washing action proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). However, there is no good way to supervise medical staff to do hand hygiene, which brings the potential risk of disease spread. Existing action assessment works usually make an overall quality prediction on an entire video. However, the internal structures of hand hygiene action are important in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, we propose a novel fine-grained learning framework to perform step segmentation and key action scorer in a joint manner for accurate hand hygiene assessment. Existing temporal segmentation methods usually employ multi-stage convolutional network to improve the segmentation robustness, but easily lead to over-segmentation due to the lack of the long-range dependence. To address this issue, we design a multi-stage convolution-transformer network for step segmentation. Based on the observation that each hand-washing step involves several key actions which determine the hand-washing quality, we design a set of key action scorers to evaluate the quality of key actions in each step. In addition, there lacks a unified dataset in hand hygiene assessment. Therefore, under the supervision of medical staff, we contribute a video dataset that contains 300 video sequences with fine-grained annotations. Extensive experiments on the dataset suggest that our method well assesses hand hygiene videos and achieves outstanding performance. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

This paper proposes a wide-band low-profile high-gain microstrip slot antenna loaded with a mushroom-type metasurface structure. By directly loading the metamaterial structure on the upper surface of the slot antenna, low profile loading characteristics are realized and the antenna bandwidth is expanded. The feasibility of an antenna-in-package (AiP) concept is demonstrated for automotive radar sensors at the 77 GHz-band. RGBT tracking receives a surge of interest in the computer vision community, but this research field lacks a large-scale and high-diversity benchmark dataset, which is essential for both the training of deep RGBT trackers and the comprehensive evaluation of RGBT tracking methods. To this end, we present a Large-scale High-diversity benchmark for short-term RGBT tracking (LasHeR) in this work. LasHeR consists of 1.24 visible and thermal infrared video pairs with more than 730K frame pairs in total. Each frame pair is spatially aligned and manually annotated with a bounding box, making the dataset well and densely annotated. LasHeR is highly diverse capturing from a broad range of object categories, camera viewpoints, scene complexities and environmental factors across seasons, weathers, day and night. We conduct a comprehensive performance evaluation of 1. RGBT tracking algorithms on the LasHeR dataset and present detailed analysis. In addition, we release the unaligned version of LasHeR to attract the research interest for alignment-free RGBT tracking, which is a more practical task in real-world applications. Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO) for feature selection has attracted increasing attention of researchers recently. However, in the existing methods, quick convergence usually degrades the diversity of the population, especially when many irrelevant and redundant features involved in them. To this end, a diversity based competitive multi-objective particle swarm optimization for feature selection problem (named D-CMOPSO) is proposed. In D-CMOPSO, a diversified competition based learning mechanism is proposed to improve the quality of found feature subset, which consists of three parts: exemplar particle construction, pairwise competition, and diversified learning strategy. The proposed competition mechanism utilizes the above three parts to boost the diversity in the following generations. Moreover, in order to guide the initial population to evolve the promising area, a maximal information coefficient based initialization strategy is also suggested. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed D-CMOPSO is competitive for feature selection problem. © 201., Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

RGB and thermal source data suffer from both shared and specific challenges, and how to explore and exploit them plays a critical role to represent the target appearance in RGBT tracking. In this paper, we propose a novel challenge-aware neural network to handle the modality-shared challenges (e.g., fast motion, scale variation and occlusion) and the modality-specific ones (e.g., illumination variation and thermal crossover) for RGBT tracking. In particular, we design several parameter-shared branches in each layer to model the target appearance under the modality-shared challenges, and several parameter-independent branches under the modality-specific ones. Based on the observation that the modality-specific cues of different modalities usually contains the complementary advantages, we propose a guidance module to transfer discriminative features from one modality to another one, which could enhance the discriminative ability of some weak modality. Moreover, all branches are aggregated together in an adaptive manner and parallel embedded in the backbone network to efficiently form more discriminative target representations. These challenge-aware branches are able to model the target appearance under certain challenges so that the target representations can be learnt by a few parameters even in the situation of insufficient training data. From the experimental results we will show that our method operates at a real-time speed while performing well against the state-of-the-art methods on three benchmark datasets. RGB-thermal salient object detection (SOD) aims to segment the common prominent regions of visible image and corresponding thermal infrared image that we call it RGBT SOD. Existing methods don’t fully explore and exploit the potentials of complementarity of different modalities and multi-type cues of image contents, which play a vital role in achieving accurate results. In this paper, we propose a multi-interactive dual-decoder to mine and model the multi-type interactions for accurate RGBT SOD. In specific, we first encode two modalities into multi-level multi-modal feature representations. Then, we design a novel dual-decoder to conduct the interactions of multi-level features, two modalities and global contexts. With these interactions, our method works well in diversely challenging scenarios even in the presence of invalid modality. Finally, we carry out extensive experiments on public RGBT and RGBD SOD datasets, and the results show that the proposed method achieves the outstanding performance against state-of-the-art algorithms.
