Dynamic data packing towards the optimization of QoC and QoS in networked control systems

A class of networked control systems is investigated whose communication network is shared with other {1.s. The design objective for such a system setting is not only the optimization of the control performance but also the efficient utilization of the communication resources. We observe that at a large time scale the data packet delay in the communication network is roughly varying piecewise constant, which is typically true for data networks like the Internet. Based on this observation, a dynamic data packing scheme is proposed within the recently developed packet-based control framework for networked control systems. As expected this proposed approach achieves a fine balance between the control performance and the communication utilization: the similar control performance can be obtained at dramatically reduced cost of the communication resources. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Repeat-pass SAR interferometry experiments with gaofen-3: A case study of ningbo area

This paper reports the repeat-pass interferometric SAR results of Gaofen-3, a Chinese civil SAR satellite, acquired in November 201. and March 201. from Ningbo area. With the spatial baseline about 600 m and time baseline 1.6 days, the coherence of the two images still achieve good enough to generate the digital elevation model (DEM). During the InSAR {1., we compared several baseline estimating methods and obtained a good flat-earth phase removed interferogram map. By using the latest SAR interferogram filter and phase unwrapping method we proposed, we improved the coherence up to 0.8 in urban area and obtained a high quality DEM in Ningbo area. In addition, we evaluated the elevation model by comparing with the elevation values extracted from SRTM. And the result shows that accuracy of the elevation map is about 5 m (RMS) in plane area and is about 22m (RMS) in mountainous region, which demonstrated that Gaofen-3 has the powerful ability of repeat-pass SAR Interferometry. With the rapid development of RFID technologies,RFID has been introduced into applications such as supply chain management,inventory control,sampling inspection,3-D positioning and object ***,the reader accesses all the tags in its interrogation region while some applications may only need to identify the tags in a specified area which is smaller than the reader's interrogation *** paper concerns the essential problem of estimating cardinality of tags in the specified *** key novelty of our solution builds on an estimation synopsis that can capture key counting information by moving the reader as well as a simple *** the help of this data structure,a BS can be obtained which only contains the target *** computing the number of 1.in the BS,we can easily get cardinality |E| of the tags in the specified *** conduct extensive experiments to examine this design and the results shows that our solution achieves high *** it not requires any modification of tags and can be implemented with only one reader and some passive RFID tags,the proposed method is easy to deploy in a practical system.

In this paper, we consider the problem of sensor scheduling under limited resources for two linear dynamical systems. We set up that only two sensor nodes were used to monitor the status of two systems, respectively, and consider the scenario that the sensors are smart enough to have abundant computation capability. At each time, the sensors have to decide whether to transmit its local estimate to the remote control center or not for further processing owing to the limited available energy and low channel bandwidth. The necessary condition for the optimal scheduling of sensors is presented which can significantly reduce the feasible optimal solution space. Based on this necessary condition, we construct an optimal explicit sensor schedule, which is periodic and minimizes the estimation error. Examples and simulations are provided at the end of the paper to support the results.

This paper is concerned with the networked predictive control of discrete-time bilinear *** deal with the network-induced communication delay that exists in both forward channel（controller to actuator）and feedback channel（sensor to controller）,a bilinear networked predictive control scheme is *** a non-convex optimization problem of solving the predictive control sequence is presented,for which two gradually-optimized algorithms are proposed based on the special structure of bilinear system dynamics *** numerical simulation indicates that the resulting predictive control sequence can compensate for the network-induced issues actively,which proves the effectiveness of the proposed predictive control strategy.

Automatic image annotation has been extensively studied, mostly from a content-based approach, whose effectiveness is restricted by the 'semantic gap' between low-level image features and semantic annotations, and by the irrelevance of annotations to image content. We propose a social diffusion analysis approach to image annotation, which exploits abundant social diffusion records about how images are disseminated within online social networks. Specifically, we propose a common-interest model to analyze social diffusion records, with the assumption that the diffusion pattern of an image in social networks is highly related to the relevance between image annotations and user preferences. In our proposed model, user preferences are represented as common interests of pairwise users instead of individual user interests. We find the notion of common interests not only facilitates the analysis of social diffusion patterns, but also leads to more accurate profiling of user preferences compared to individual interests. Based on the common-interest model, we design an image annotation framework via social diffusion analysis, which consists of the mining of common interests from social diffusion records, the feature extraction from diffusion graphs and common interests, and the automatic annotation by the learning-to-rank method. Experimental results on real-world data sets show that our proposed common-interest based approach outperforms individual-interest based methods, and also achieves superior performance than state-of-the-art content-based image annotation methods. © 201. Sketch-based image retrieval (SBIR) has been extensively studied for decades because sketch is one of the most intuitive ways to describe ideas. However, the large expressional gap between hand-drawn sketches and natural images with small-scale complex structures is the fundamental challenge for SBIR systems. We present a novel framework to efficiently retrieve images with a query sketch based on saliency detection. In order to extract primary contours of the scene and depress textures, a hierarchical saliency map is computed for each image. Object contours are extracted from the saliency map instead of the original natural image. Histograms of oriented gradients (HOG) are extracted at multiple scales on a dense gradient field. Using a bag-of-visual-words representation and an inverted index structure, our system efficiently retrieves images by sketches. The experimental results conducted on a dataset of 1. k photographs demonstrate that our method performs well for a wide range of natural scenes. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 201..

An efficient four-parameter affine motion model for video coding

In this paper, we study a simplified affine motion model based coding framework to overcome the limitation of translational motion model and maintain low computational complexity. The proposed framework mainly has three key contributions. First, we propose to reduce the number of affine motion parameters from 6 to 4. The proposed four-parameter affine motion model can not only handle most of the complex motions in natural videos but also save the bits for two parameters. Second, to efficiently encode the affine motion parameters, we propose two motion prediction modes, i.e., advanced affine motion vector prediction combined with a gradient-based fast affine motion estimation algorithm and affine model merge, where the latter attempts to reuse the affine motion parameters (instead of the motion vectors) of neighboring blocks. Third, we propose two fast affine motion compensation algorithms. One is the one-step sub-pixel interpolation, which reduces the computations of each interpolation. The other is the interpolation-precision-based adaptive block size motion compensation, which performs motion compensation at the block level rather than the pixel level to reduce the interpolation times. Our proposed techniques have been implemented based on the state-of-the-art high efficiency video coding standard, and the experimental results show that the proposed techniques altogether achieve on average 1..1. and 1..3% bits saving for random access and low delay configurations, respectively, on typical video sequences that have rich rotation or zooming motions. Non-negative matrix factorization(NMF) has been widely used in mixture analysis for hyperspectral remote sensing. When used for spectral unmixing analysis, however, it has two main shortcomings:(1. since the dimensionality of hyperspectral data is usually very large, NMF tends to suffer from large computational complexity for the popular multiplicative iteration rule;(2) NMF is sensitive to noise(outliers), and thus the corrupted data will make the results of NMF meaningless. Although principal component analysis(PCA) can be used to mitigate these two problems, the transformed data will contain negative numbers, hindering the direct use of the multiplicative iteration rule of NMF. In this paper, we analyze the impact of PCA on NMF, and find that multiplicative NMF can also be applicable to data after principal component transformation. Based on this conclusion, we present a method to perform NMF in the principal component space, named ‘principal component NMF'(PCNMF). Experimental results show that PCNMF is both accurate and time-saving.

Visual analyses of music history: A user-centric approach

Music history, referring to the records of users' listening or downloading history in online music services, is the primary source for music service providers to analyze users' preferences on music and thus to provide personalized recommendations to users. In order to engage users into the service and to improve user experience, it would be beneficial to provide visual analyses of one user's music history as well as visualized recommendations to that user. In this paper, we take a user-centric approach to the design of such visual analyses. We start by investigating user needs on such visual analyses and recommendations, then propose several different visualization schemes, and perform a pilot study to collect user feedback on the designed schemes. We further conduct user studies to verify the utility of the proposed schemes, and the results not only demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed visualization, but also provide important insights to guide the visualization design in the future.
