CONTINUOUS-SPECTRUM IN THE GROUND-STATE OF 2 SPIN-1.2 MODELS IN THE INFINITE-VOLUME LIMIT

We show that in the ground states of the infinite-volume limits of both the spin-1.2 anisotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model (in dimensions d greater-than-or-equal-to 2), and the ferromagnetic Ising model in a strong transverse field (in dimensions d greater-than-or-equal-to 1. there is an interval in the spectrum above the mass gap which contains a continuous band of energy levels. We use the methods of Bricmont and Frohlich to develop our expansions, as well as a method of Kennedy and Tasaki to do the expansions in the quantum mechanical limit. Where the expansions converge, they are then shown to have spectral measures which have absolutely continuous parts on intervals above the mass gaps.

CONVERGENCE TO THE GROUND-STATE ENERGY IN THE THERMODYNAMIC LIMIT OF THE ISING-MODEL IN A STRONG TRANSVERSE FIELD

For the quantum mechanical Ising model in a strong transverse field we show that the convergence of the ground-state energy per site as the volume goes to infinity has an Ornstein-Zernicke behavior. That is, if the diameter of the d-dimensional lattice is given by L, the absolute value of the difference of the ground-state energy per site and its limit is asymptotically exp(-xiL) L(-d/2) for some positive constant xi. We also show that the correlation function has the same behavior. Our results are derived by cluster expansions, using a method of Bricmont and Frohlich which we extend to the quantum mechanical case.

ATTRACTORS AND TRANSIENTS FOR A PERTURBED PERIODIC KDV EQUATION - A NONLINEAR SPECTRAL-ANALYSIS

In this paper we rigorously show the existence and smoothness in epsilon of traveling wave solutions to a periodic Korteweg-deVries equation with a Kuramoto-Sivashinsky-type perturbation for sufficiently small values of the perturbation parameter epsilon. The shape and the spectral transforms of these traveling waves are calculated perturbatively to first order. A linear stability theory using squared eigenfunction bases related to the spectral theory of the KdV equation is proposed and carried out numerically. Finally, the inverse spectral transform is used to study the transient and asymptotic stages of the dynamics of the solutions.

An age-structured population is considered in which the birth and death rates of an individual of age a is a function of the density of individuals older and/or younger than a. An existence/uniqueness theorem is proved for the McKendrick equation that governs the dynamics of the age distribution function. This proof shows how a decoupled ordinary differential equation for the total population size can be derived. This result makes a study of the population's asymptotic dynamics (indeed, often its global asymptotic dynamics) mathematically tractable. Several applications to models for intra-specific competition and predation are given.

Context. Imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs) are used to observe very high-energy photons from the ground. Gamma rays are indirectly detected through the Cherenkov light emitted by the air showers they induce. The new generation of experiments, in particular the Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO), sets ambitious goals for discoveries of new gamma-ray sources and precise measurements of the already discovered ones. To achieve these goals, both hardware and data analysis must employ cutting-edge techniques. This also applies to the LST-1. the first IACT built for the CTAO, which is currently taking data on the Canary island of La Palma. Aims. This paper introduces a new event reconstruction technique for IACT data, aiming to improve the image reconstruction quality and the discrimination between the signal and the background from misidentified hadrons and electrons. Methods. The technique models the development of the extensive air shower signal, recorded as a waveform per pixel, seen by CTAO telescopes’ cameras. Model parameters are subsequently passed to random forest regressors and classifiers to extract information on the primary particle. Results. The new reconstruction was applied to simulated data and to data from observations of the Crab Nebula performed by the LST-1. The event reconstruction method presented here shows promising performance improvements. The angular and energy resolution, and the sensitivity, are improved by 1. to 20% over most of the energy range. At low energy, improvements reach up to 22%, 47%, and 50%, respectively. A future extension of the method to stereoscopic analysis for telescope arrays will be the next important step. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
