Regional transport characteristics of PM2.5 pollution events in Beijing during 201.–2021

Although air pollutant emissions have sharply reduced in recent years,the occurrence of PM_(2.5) pollution events remains an intractable {1. problem in Beijing,and regional transport is the key influence ***,it has been difficult to identify regional transport characteristics and the main contributors to pollution events in recent *** this study,the relative contribution of regional transport was quantified(61.3%)in PM_(2.5) pollution events during 201.-2021.by the Community Multiscale Air Quality model embedded with the Integrated Source Apportionment Model(CMAQ-ISAM).The four regions with the largest fractional contributions to Beijing for all events were Shandong(7.7%),South Hebei(7.3%),Baoding(6.2%),and Langfang(5.8%).pollution events were classified into the following types based on regional transport directions:local,southwest(SW),southeast(SE),south-mixed(SM),and *** on the transport distance,the SW,SE,and SM types can be subdivided into SW-short,SW-long,SE-short,SE-long,SM-short,SM-long distance from southwest,SM-long distance from southeast,and SM-long distance from southwest and ***-long was regarded as the most important type,with the highest relative frequency(20%).The transport directions were related to the southwest wind at 925 hPa and southeast wind at 1.00 hPa in the south of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei(BTH)region,and the distance was mainly controlled by wind *** wind-field difference can be attributed to the low-pressure and high-pressure systems that control the BTH *** results suggest that regional joint pollution control should be optimized based on the transport type.

Real-world identification of high-emitting vehicles based on near-road sensor measurement

A small fraction of high-emitting vehicles make disproportionally large contributions to total fleet *** identifying high emitters under real driving conditions is *** this study,two portable sensor platforms for high-emitter identification were used for online roadside measurements of vehicle-emitted NO,particle number(PN),and CO_(2) concentrations in Tangshan and Chengdu,*** measured mean concentrations of vehicle-emitted NO,PN,and CO_(2) in Tangshan and Chengdu were 27.7-32.9 ppb,5.4×1.^(3)-8.2×1.^(3)#/cm^(3),and 7.3-8.2 ppm,*** on more than one month of second-by-second measured pollutant concentrations and passed vehicle information,a scheme was developed to identify high *** the 21.000 and 43000 vehicles that passed the roadside sensor platforms at Tangshan and Chengdu,approximately 60%and 73%of vehicle exhaust plumes were successfully detected using the sensor *** NO and PN emission factors(EFs)tended to have log-normal distributions with the median values of 1..3 g/kg-fuel and 1.3×1.^(1.)#/kg-fuel,*** general,the percentages of high-emitters identified at the Tangshan and Chengdu sites were 8.7% and 1..2% of the total identified vehicles,*** these high-emitters,1.2 vehicles were randomly inspected on-site with the assistance of traffic officers,and the rate of correct identification was approximately 95%,which demonstrates that our methodology performs well in identifying real-world ***,its low cost,good mobility,strong adaptability,and high correct identification rate make this roadside sensor platform a promising approach for real-world high-emitter identification.

Impacts of electrochemical disinfection on the viability and structure of the microbiome in secondary effluent water

Electrochemical disinfection(ECD)is a promising disinfection technique for wastewater reclamation;however,the impacts of ECD on the microbiome in secondary effluent wastewater remain *** this study,Propidium monoazide-qPCR(PMA-qPCR)and the plate count method were used to evaluate the inactivation performance,and the PMA-1.S rRNA gene sequences of living cells were targeted to study the microbiome.A discrepancy was found between PMA-qPCR and the plate count method in the evaluation of cell count,with increases of 1.5 to 2.2 orders of magnitude in the disinfection rate after 1.0 s of ***,the cell count recovered and occasionally exceeded original levels within 3 d after *** was suppressed after ECD,but the microbiome after 1.0 s disinfection retained a higher level of evenness and stability in the community with a median Shannon index(>3.7).Pathogenic bacteria remained high in relative abundance even after 1.0 s of 25 V disinfection,but the biofilm-forming population was effectively suppressed by *** co-occurrence network revealed a centralized and fragile network as disinfection persisted,demonstrating the destabilizing effects of ECD on the *** pathways for cell membrane synthesis and organic compound degradation were enriched after *** reaction of the microbiome after ECD was similar to other disinfection techniques in terms of community structure.

Synergetic PM_(2.5) and O_(3) control strategy for the Yangtze River Delta,China

Ambient particle composition and toxicity in 31.major cities in China

Current assessment of air quality or control effectiveness is solely based on particulate matter(PM)mass levels,without considering their toxicity differences in terms of health ***,we collected a total of 465 automo-bile air conditioning filters from 31.major Chinese cities to study the composition and toxicity of PM at a national *** assay showed that normalized PM toxicity(NIOG)in different Chinese cities varied greatly from the highest 4.99×1.^(-3)for Changsha to the lowest 7.72×1.^(-4)for ***0G values were observed to have significant correlations with annual PM_(1.) concentration(r=-0.41.,p=0.020)and some PM components(total fungi,so.2-and calcium element).The concentrations of different elements and water-soluble ions in PM also varied by several orders of magnitude for 31.cities in *** concentrations in PM analyzed using limulus amebocyte lysate assay ranged from 2.88 EU/mg PM(Hangzhou)to 62.82 EU/mg PM(Shijiazhuang)among 31.Chinese ***,real-time qPCR revealed 1.~1.0-fold differences in total bacterial and fungal levels among 31.Chinese *** concentrations of chemical(water soluble ions and trace elements)and bi-ological(fungi,bacteria and endotoxin)components in PM were found to be significantly correlated with some meteorological factors and gaseous pollutants such as SO_(2).Our results have demonstrated that PM toxicity from 31.major cities varied greatly up to 6.5 times difference;and components such as fungi and SO_(4)^(2-)in PM could play important roles in the observed PM *** city-specific air {1. control strategy that integrates toxicity factors should be enacted in order to maximize health and economic *** work also provides a comprehensive view on the overall PM {1. situation in China.

Bioaerosols are a subset of important airborne particulates that present a substantial human health hazard due to their allergenicity and *** reactions in atmospheric processes can significantly influence the health hazard presented by bioaerosols;however,few studies have summarized such alterations to bioaerosols and the mechanisms *** this paper,we systematically review the chemical modifications of bioaerosols and the impact on their health effects,mainly focusing on the exacerbation of allergic diseases such as asthma,rhinitis,and ***,nitration,and oligomerization induced by hydroxyl radicals,ozone,and nitrogen dioxide are the major chemical modifications affecting bioaerosols,all of which can aggravate allergenicity mainly through immunoglobulin E *** processes can even interact with climate change including the greenhouse effect,suggesting the importance of bioaerosols in the future implementation of carbon neutralization *** summary,the chemical modification of bioaerosols and the subsequent impact on health hazards indicate that the combined management of both chemical and biological components is required to mitigate the health hazards of particulate air pollution.

Impacts of o-cresol spill on composition and function of river sediment and soil microbial communities

o-Cresol is a toxic substance with strong irritating and corrosive effects on skin and mucous membranes. To date, information on the effects of o-cresol on microbial communities in the natural environment is very limited. In the present study, 1.S rRNA sequencing and metagenomic technique were carried out to elucidate the effects of the o-cresol spill on microbial communities in river sediments and nearby soils. o-Cresol spill induced the increase in the relative abundance of phyla Planctomycetes and Gemmatimonadetes, suggesting their resilience to o-cresol-induced stress. Uncultured Gemmatimonadetes genera and the MND1.genus exhibited enrichment, while the Pseudomonas genus dominated across all samples, indicating their potential pivotal roles in adapting to the o-cresol spill. Moreover, o-cresol spill impaired the metabolic functions of microbes but triggered their defense mechanisms. Under o-cresol pressure, microbial functions related to carbon fixation were upregulated and functions associated with sulfur metabolism were downregulated. In addition, the o-cresol spill led to an increase in functional genes related to the conversion of o-cresol to 3-methylcatechol. Several genes involved in the degradation of aromatic compounds were also identified, potentially contributing to the biodegradation of o-cresol. This study provides fresh insights into the repercussions of an abrupt o-cresol spill on microbial communities in natural environments, shedding light on their adaptability, defense mechanisms, and biodegradation potential. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Single and combined effects of secondary polyethylene microplastic on the growth of Pak choi and the soil microbiome composition

It has been confirmed that microplastics(MPs)are present in the *** study simulated secondary PE-MPs via aging and mechanical processes to evaluate their effects on Pak choi(Brassica rapa L.)over 21.*** common pollutants,dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane(DDT)and naphthalene,were used in the combined toxicity *** results indicated that the growth of Pak choi was significantly inhibited after exposure to secondary PE-MPs,and the combined effects were antagonistic,owing to the adsorption capacity of secondary PE-MPs to DDT and *** stress in Pak choi can be markedly affected,leading to oxidative damage to plant *** moisture content,soil bulk density,soil density,cation exchange capacity(CEC),and FDA hydrolase in the planted soils increased in the treated groups,and the TOC content changed *** also found that the microbial composition of the soil in the DDT and naphthalene groups showed more significant alterations than that in the other *** diversity analysis showed that species diversity increased in the combined groups but indicated a clear downward trend in the single MPs *** study suggests that secondary PE-MPs harm the growth of Pak choi and can change soil properties,revealing the harm to the ecosystem of MPs in the soil.

Thermodynamic-based ecological scaling theory in urban metabolic framework:a review

Prior research has consistently demonstrated that urban economic and social systems adhere to the empirical scaling ***,a plethora of evidence,including the scale-free networks of energy metabolism,the allometric growth patterns of species and populations,and the scaling law relationship between exergy and transformity in biosphere systems across various levels,indicates that urban ecosystems exhibit multi-level scaling law characteristics in energy metabolism under self-organization,alongside significant human activity *** study synthesizes these findings to hypothesize that urban ecological components are also aligned with system-level scaling theory within the urban metabolism *** encompasses:1.the existence of multistable coexistence and mutual transformation phenomena,mirroring the dynamic nature of scaling laws;and 2)a nuanced balance between the ecosystem and the socio-economic system,particularly in the realms of spatial competition and output *** ecosystem scaling theory hypotheses of urban metabolic processes offer a theoretical foundation for identifying ecological security tipping points,which are pivotal in the strategic decision-making for ecological planning and management in the future.
