Shape matching and retrieval are fundamental topics in image processing area. With the rapid growing number of images, fast speed in shape matching is necessary, but most methods focus on the retrieval accuracy. In this article, we propose a dynamic angular partition descriptor (DAPD) based on the statistical distribution of the shape contour points, which is scale invariant inherently. DAPD has low computational complexity which enables fast shape matching, and naturally sacrifices a little accuracy in retrieval. However, we leverage the angle sensitivity in the structure of DAPD, which can compensate the loss in accuracy by 4.46% on average. Experiments on several shape databases show that, our descriptor can speed up shape matching by up to 1.X, but still retains 91.92% accuracy in the top-4 similar shapes in retrieval tests. Meanwhile, we generate some distorted shapes to verify the robustness of DAPD against rotation and noise.
