UNHAS Gowa campus is an urban space in the spatial area of Gowa Regency. There are 5,200 students, lecturers, and staff who spend a third of their time studying and working on this campus. In addition, there are around 60 public toilet centers that serve them in disposing of waste and cleaning their bodies. This study aims to determine how these toilet facilities expanded from the design process, construction, utilization to the maintenance procedure, and the comparison history between the toilets in UNHAS Tamalanrea campus and UNHAS Gowa campus. The research method is based on phenomenon ology. Data collection and analysis was carried out through simultaneous field observations with in-depth interviews with participants. The findings of the research show that although currently the public toilets at the UNHAS Gowa campus are still fairly well maintained but the data also show the potential to lead to the same quality as the public toilets at the UNHAS Tamalanrea campus.

The increasing number of private transportation in Indonesia up to 10% per year affected in increasing air pollution which is very worrying. The urgency to make affordable urban planning that encourage people to walk as one of the solution. TOD as an integrated zoning system enables the realization of a reduction in the number of private transportation while accomodating mobility on foot. Walking habit is become a long-term mission and can not be achieved without through some phases. Besides that, Indonesia as a tropical country has a relatively high environmental temperature factor which can inhibit outdoor activities. In this research, e-scooter will be an alternative mode of transportation that can respond to the vision of reducing the number of private transportation as well as being an aspect of encouraging people in Indonesia as one of tropical country to do an outdoor activities.

Micro and mezzo space pattern in Kampung Kauman Solo

A “Space Pattern” is a regular pattern of housing blocks in the settlement. The location of the research is in Kampung Kauman Solo, which has special link to Surakarta Hadiningrat Sunanate, the Great Mosque of Surakarta, and Klewer Batik Traditional Market. It is a main landmark of the city. They are the centers of tourist attraction in Solo. Recently, Kauman becomes a new attraction especially ‘batik tourism’ called Kampung Wisata Batik Kauman. This research is very important because Kampung Kauman has developed from a village of santri to a village of batik, which has potential and urgency to promote Solo city. Kampung Kauman Surakarta is the main settlement of Muslim community in the complex of Masjid Agung Surakarta and is closely related to the Surakarta Hadiningrat Sunanate. It is famous for its heritage buildings, multicultural people and tourist attraction. The objectives of this research are to identify and analyze the micro and mezzo-spatial area. The method of this research is a field study. The results showed that Kauman is unique with a grid spatial housing pattern and long corridors. The micro-space pattern is a closed pattern, consisting of groups of conserved old heritage houses, the royal servants’ original houses, new settlers’ houses and shophouses. The mezzo- space pattern has multi-functions: housing activity, religious activity, Islamic education activity, social activity, and trading related activity.

Nowadays, with all the climate change problems that we face worldwide, engineers from different specialists work together towards Sustainability and finding solutions, and investigating its environmental impact thoroughly. Architectural, Chemical, environmental, civil engineers have always been closely linked in designing and constructing buildings. Geothermal energy is a local, resilient, reliable, ecologically benign, and sustainable form of the renewable energy system. This type of natural energy could be generated from the earth’s heat and takes a variety of purposes, including building heating and cooling, electricity generation, supplying warm/cold water for agricultural products in greenhouses, as well as balneological usage. Furthermore, geothermal energy isn’t affected by weather and could provide electricity and heat nearly constantly through the year. This study intends to investigate the opportunity of using geothermal energy in Iraq under the ground represents one of the sustainable energy resources we can use it will be a significant environmental benefit in our housing in air conditioning applications. This review gives a summary of geothermal energy systems in general. Topics addressed include: an introduction to the environments and the energy, also their relationship, a geothermal energy history brief, an overview of geothermal energy systems throughout the world and also through Iraq, and an overview of geothermal systems environmental impacts as well as the environmental impact of Sustainable buildings architecture design, are just a few of the topics covered. Hence, the achieved conclusions of this review can make changes towards sustainable environmental design.

Feasibility of METSI UGM office as a workplace in natural lighting availability and its occupants’ adaptive behavior

Research on how to optimize natural lighting can recommend ways to save the energy without ignore the occupants’ visual comfort. This paper discusses the feasibility as workplace of the office workspace providing sufficient natural lighting and how the occupants respond to that environment. The research is conducted with computer simulation using DIALux software and field measurement at three different times of day: 8.00, 12.00 and 16.00. The research object is an office room of Magister Teknik Sistem (METSI), Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta. It is measured and simulated in two window conditions; (i) without vertical blinds and (ii) with closed vertical blinds. The measurement and simulation show that the highest average of illuminance level is 305 lx and the highest daylight factor is 1.135%. This level is reached at the 12.00 with windows without blinds. The result is below the standard which are 350 lx for illuminance level and 2% for daylight factor. Therefore, it can be concluded that the natural lighting of the research object/ room has failed to meet the requirement needed for an acceptable workplace. Nevertheless, the occupants passively adjust the vertical blinds’ position in order to create their visual comfort. The occupants initiated adaptive activity, such as moving (from their sitting position) to where there is abundant light or turning on the artificial lighting when the room is dark.

Alternative use of space in slum settlements case study: Kampong Gandekan Kampung Baru in Kali Pepe river Surakarta

Slum areas are heavily populated urban informal settlements characterized by substandard housing and illegal land usage (squatting). Surakarta is one of many Indonesian cities that are still entangled by this problem. One of the slum concentrations in Surakarta is the slum settlement (kampong) alongside Kali Pepe riverbank. Within these slum settlements, people survive in substandard housing by effectively using the limited space. This research aims to discover the typologies of the alternative use of space. This research takes a case study approach in a few kampongs alongside Kali Pepe riverbank, based on the types and sizes of small houses within this area, considering the number of occupants and the space required. The data for this research is categorized as primary data which was collected through a series of site observations and focus group discussions. The data will be analysed, compared, and classified to find out the typology of the alternative solutions of space requirements. This research uses mixed-method analysis to define how Kali Pepe’s slum residents alternatively use the spaces within their kampongs. Based on the typologies found through multiple analyses, this research concludes that the use of space in substandard housing cannot be bound by limited spaces. Furthermore, the main strategy to solve the problem of limited space is by using alternative spaces.

Sound preservation at the Grand Mosque of Yogyakarta in Indonesia: The acoustic performance of the traditional architecture

The Grand Mosque of Yogyakarta keeps the originality since it was built in 1773, both in the structure and construction of traditional Javanese architectural style. The study needs to be done to determine the quality of the acoustics in the main room of the mosque. A study on the mosque acoustic parameters was conducted by measurements of impulse response and soundscape. The mosque interior setting and surrounding based on Javanese traditional architecture form a good quality acoustics and audial comfort in sufficient loudness, the clarity of speech, evenly distributed clarity of sound and optimum reverberation time that affects the clarity of the conversation. Background noise can be overcome with the gurgling sound of water in the pond in front of the mosque, that it can bring hearts at ease, so that noises from children screaming and motorcycle passing can be minimized. This particular quality provides a very strong reason to preserve it. The acoustic characteristics are intangible cultural heritage as well as local wisdom. With its quietness and audial comfort, the mosque is highly expected to be a coaching center for a better generation and the mosque can be used as reference for planning the other mosque.

Multifunctional spaces in slum settlements and their relation to activity pattern case study of Kampung Sangkrah, Surakarta

Surakarta is a rapidly urbanized city and it causes the limitation of the availability of land within its urban area. This entangled problem is resulting in the development of slum settlements that spread across the city. One of the slum concentration areas is located on Pepe riverbanks downstream area that belongs to Kampung Sangkrah administrative boundaries. Slum settlements are characterized as a densely-populated area lacking of, or absence of, open space. This condition forces slum inhabitants to effectively use their available spaces, even multi-functionally. This research aims to observe how slum inhabitants multi-functionally use the spaces around their houses and determine the typology of multifunctional space and also the factors that influence it. To understand this phenomenon, this research used activity pattern perspectives. The scope of observation covers in-house (internal) space utilizations and neighborhood-level (external) space utilization. The data used for this research were collected primarily through site observations and interviews, using sampling to conduct data collection for in-house activities and space utilization. The analysis was conducted using descriptive method qualitatively. The research concluded that there are three types of multifunctional space utilization within slum settlements, and the utilization of spaces, whether internal or external utilization also varies depending on the inhabitants’ economic-related activities.

Structural, acoustic, and aesthetic performances of double layer wall made of oyster shell and polymer as green material in green construction

The aim of research was to introduce green material for construction project by using waste material made of oyster shell and polymer as a substitute material to reduce the use of cement. In this research, the use of cement was replaced by oyster shell powder and mortar that was injected with polyurethane to lighten the weight on the structure. The methods used to find out the structure performance was DOE method based on the standards of ASTM 109/C 109M - 08 as well as the modulus of elasticity test. Acoustic test was also conducted with the standard test based on ASTM E 2611-09 and ASTM E 413. The aesthetic approach was conducted by an establishment of a model that represented the concept of double layer in the wall of the building. The results of this study proved that poly-urethane injection on mortar could decrease the weight of mortar by 20%. The absorption coefficient of polymer concrete was 0.9 – 1.00 at the frequency of 1500 – 2500 Hz and the Sound Transmission Loss (STL) of material was above 51 dB. Innovation of double layer building materials can be enriched by additional materials, such as natural fiber composite and fiber reinforced polymer. Aesthetically, the double layer wall material made of shells and polymer have a positive prospect to be used as construction material and can be applied in the architectural sphere as an aesthetic component of building, such as wall panel, wall ornament, double skin facade, and acoustical wall treatment.

The function of green belt Jatibarang as quality control for the environment of Semarang city

The quality of the healthy environment in a neighborhood city is decreasing in number. According to the government regulation, Act No. 26 of 2007, a city should have 20% of green areas from the total area of the city. Now, Semarang only has 7.5% of green areas from the total city area. One of the efforts made by the Government of Semarang is the establishment of a greenbelt in Jatibarang area. It consists of several parts, namely, the reservoirs in the green belt area and also the plant zone in other sectors. The reservoir has a function as the controller of water resources sustainability where the crops serve as the balance for the combination. Thus, it is interesting to study how the interplay of these two functions in a green belt area. The primary data used in this study was obtained from the locus of research by direct observation, interview, and physical data collection. Based on the data collection, data was then processed and analyzed in accordance with the indicators that had been compiled based on theories of reservoirs, green belts, and the quality of the urban environment. Government regulations regarding with the greenbelt and tanks were also used as references in the discussion. The research found out that the presence of the reservoir and the plants in the green belt of Jatibarang can improve the function of the green belt optimally which is a real influence for the improvement of the environment quality, especially water. The Greenbelt was divided into four zones, namely the Arboretum, Argo - Forestry, Ecotourism, Buffer - Zone also made the region became a beautiful greenbelt that brought a positive influence to environmental quality.
