Learning from the settlement in Mount Merapi’s slopes: Orientation and shape of traditional house

Settlement in Mount Merapi’s slopes possesses a strong local wisdom. The purpose of this study was to look for Local Wisdom reflected on the orientation, and shape of the house in Pelemsari Village that location in the highest settlement in Mount Merapi’s slopes. This research was investigated using qualitative-naturalistic approach. The results of the study showed that the house has madhep ngarep orientation which is meant facing the palace. Additionally, it also affirms to the public perception that the orientation of the house is do not dare facing the mountain. The closet is oriented to avoid facing the Qiblah. The orientation of omah bajang is facing south, so when giving offerings, the giver of offerings will be facing mountain. There are two shapes of a house namely omah sinom (wedok roof house) and omah kampung (lanang roof house). In the placement, the omah kampung is placed behind omah sinom, which has a meaning men allow women to sit on their laps so that the wives have a longer lifespan.

Housing ownership and affordability among low-income society in the poorest sub-district of Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia

The Government has intervened to deal with various affordable public housing programs, as well as financing programs for Low Income society in Indonesia. The characteristics of this society in each region are so diverse, that made the housing programs for this social segment uneasy in reaching the right target. Regulation of Housing and Settlement No. 2/2001 has mandated that the State are obliged to implement a habitable public housing for people, especially for the low income society. The purpose of this study is exploring the low-income residents’ preferences and affordability of home ownership for their families in the poorest sub-district of Semarang. Aspects of studies include family conditions, financing, location, housing type and price. The research used a descriptive method to analyze a set of questionnaire data, distributed to low income residents in Sub district Tanjungmas, which isthe poorest sub district in Semarang. The results showed that the respondents developed a vision of home ownership by saving their money for the allocated housing budget and taking a bank installment. They tended to plan to get a house in their current neighborhood or nearby or anywhere else with the same price range. They really understood that, in order to get a better home and neighborhood they have to pay for higher prices. Therefore, their housing criteria or standards were set based on the quality of life in their current residential area, and should be located in a township (kampung).

Green connector design for conservation campus

Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) as a green campus of conservation must be comfortable, safe and fit for the users. As the growth of several new campus buildings, the need for integration means building green connectors adjacent buildings. The design is in line with their internal transportation policies that encourage the academic community to walk in the campus area. This effort is also to make the walk as a cultural activity, not merely implement policies campus only. So that the future is expected to create a built environment conservation campus humane, environmentally friendly and an inspiration for the region around the campus environment in an effort to better environmental management. The connector provided is considered still can not fully meet the eligibility aspect and comfort. Based on the extent of the problem can be formulated green connector design of the building to meet the comfort of pedestrians on campus. This study has the objective to: (1) assess the development potential point green connectors; (2) develop alternative design green connectors. Alternative green connector design that is more convenient to replace the connector campus that are currently lacking to provide comfort for pedestrians.
