The effect of reinforcement ratio of hibiscus skin with a resin coating on lightweight concrete beam under bending

The use of natural fibers as an alternative of reinforcement for the structure of light weight concrete beam is highly encouraging. The use of natural fiber was chosen because of its easy availability; easy to process, abundant in number, renewable, inexpensive, and relatively high tensile strength. Indeed, it is an environmentally friendly material. One of natural fiber is skin of hibiscus. Hence, the objective of this study is to investigate the effect of reinforcement ratio of hibiscus skin with a resin coating towards the flexural strength of light concrete beam. This study was conducted at Laboratory Structures and Materials, Mataram University. The dimensions of concrete beams were 15× 20× 150 cm and the variation of tensile reinforcement from hibiscus skin were 3, 6, and 8 with a diameter of 12 mm. In addition, the ratio of reinforcement was 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046. The yield strength of hibiscus skin with a resin coating in tension was 43,67 MPa. Furthermore, the largest ultimate load (Pu) for the ratio reinforcement of 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046 were 7,564 kN, 12,811 kN, and 14,19 kN respectively. Meanwhile, the ultimate moments (Mu) were 2,125 kNm, 3,125 kNm and 3,625 kNm for for the ratio reinforcement of 0,014; 0,031; and 0,046 respectively. Therefore, the greater the ratio of the reinforcement results the higher of the load resistance. Thus, the hibiscus reinforcement has the ability to increase the beam resistance against the flexural load.

The study of performance assessment based on problem based learning not only done in the field of technical vocational education but also in the health education, economic education, environmental education. The development of performance assessment based on problem based learning is still rare in vocational schools. Using 2013 curriculum which is required to use 21st century learning strategies, one of which is Problem Based Learning (PBL). Performance assessment is said by its advocators to be more in line with instruction than multiple-choice tests. Performance assessment is seen as having a better possibility of measuring more complex skills and communication. This article aims to design based performance assessment based on problem based learning using design based research method. The validation used in this article is expert judgement. The result of the study revealed that the cronbach alpha valu for the entire measurment scale was 0.97. The cronbach alpha value is between 0.8 to 1.00. Therefore , design performance assessment based on problem based learning has a good reability. This article aims to find out how to design performance assessment based on problem based learning for students geomatics engineering. This article provide an overview of the development of design performance assessment based on problem based learning for vocational students.

Background Chlortetracycline (CTC) belongs to the class of tetracycline’s compounds, which is known for its antibacterial activity. CTC was largely consumed by farm animals than humans, which leads to the growth antibiotic – resistant bacteria and environmental contamination. So far no one reported the electrochemical detection and determination of CTC by using AuNPs@BiVO4 composite. Some reports have been reported using conventional chromatography which is most expensive, time-consuming and highly equipped method. Results Here, we report a simple method for preparing gold nanoparticle decorated bismuth vanadate (AuNPs@BiVO4), which was dropped cast on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). The AuNPs@BiVO4 and AuNPs@BiVO4/SPCE materials were characterized using TEM, SEM-EDX, XPS, DLS, ELS, EIS, and CV. The as-prepared AuNPs@BiVO4/SPCE was used to detect and determine chlortetracycline (CTC) by different pulse potentials in phosphate buffer pH 7.0. The electrode possessed a wide linear range of 0.99 – 19.06 µM, with obtained LOD = 0.15 µM, LOQ = 0.49 µM, and sensitivity = 0.059 μA μM-1 cm-2. It also exhibited good selectivity, stability, and repeatability, recovering 87.14% - 100% for detecting CTC in Mili Q and tap water. Significance Facile and rapid synthesis of AuNPs@BiVO4 nanocomposite film modified electrode at physiological pH conditions has been prepared and A highly electrochemical detection and determination of CTC using AuNPs@BiVO4 nanocomposite film has been developed for the first time. Thus, the proposed electrode could be applied for the detection and determination of CTC in water sources and has the potential to be used for real sample analysis. © 2024, The Authors. Visual assessment deterioration analysis of runways at Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport Balikpapan

Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan (SAMS) Airport has an important role as the gateway of economic activity in Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Elements of the airport consist of runways, taxiway, apron and the terminal building of departure and arrival. The runway has an important role as a key element in airport infrastructure, this is related to aircraft and passenger safety in air traffic at SAMS Airport, which is currently one of the best airports in Indonesia that meets the International Standard qualification. The purpose of this study is to perform visual assessment of runway deterioration at SAMS Airport using PCI (Pavement Condition Index) method, to know the factors affecting runway deterioration and the effective distress treatment to overcome deterioration at a runway. The visual assessment data are collected from PT. Angkasa Pura I (Persero) Sepinggan, by measuring the types and area of deterioration occurring on the runway during 1-month period (in September 2018), then PCI is analyzed by using ASTM D 5340 – 98. The results show that the PCI value is 80.4 which means the rating is excellent. The most common typical distress occurred at Threshold Runway 25 section 1 with the type of distress is block cracking which mainly caused by asphalt concrete shrinkage and daily temperature condition resulting in stress or strain series, another type is depression initially caused by the settlement from the soil foundation or construction process. Since PCI shows excellent state, the distress repair treatment to be performed is surface repair or routine maintenance with partial mill and overlay method.

Developing countries are currently experiencing rapid urbanization due to economic growth which resulted in large scale of residential constructions including condominium. Despite its contribution to the society welfare, condominium projects also create significant negative impacts on the environment through the consumption of non- renewable resources. Various methods, technologies as well as regulations have been employed to overcome the problem. However, the efforts to reduce the impacts, improve resource efficiency and promote sustainable construction were challenged by the fact that adopting sustainability will increase costs during investment phase, which is the main concern of most investors. In that respect, this paper was aimed to develop a dynamic hypothesis of sustainable construction which might be applicable for condominium project in developing countries, using a case study in Surabaya, Indonesia. System dynamic modelling was utilized to analyze the interrelationship among the controlling variables that influence system behavior of sustainable construction and project cost over a certain period. Variables were selected from previous literatures relevant to sustainable construction aspects. A questionnaire was then designed to collect experts’ perception on the influencing factors to sustainability in condominium projects. It included material and energy consumption, construction waste, lean construction method, use of green materials, indicators of sustainable construction and life cycle cost. The model obtained in this study was expected to be considered as a tool for improving sustainable construction while maintaining business objective in condominium project and formulating better policy to achieve economic, social and environmental sustainability target in the future.

Effect of fly ash on compressive strength of concrete containing recycled coarse aggregate

The recycling technology must be adopted in concrete construction work in Indonesia. The using of recycling coarse aggregate in construction work included an effort in recycling technology. It would reduce the usage of natural coarse aggregate and would reduce the material cost. In this research the natural coarse aggregate is replaced with recycled coarse aggregate. Fly ash needed as material addition to improve concrete quality. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of the using percentage of recycling coarse aggregate, the percentage of fly ash and water-cement ratio to the compressive strength of concrete. The method used was an experimental laboratory. Concrete specimens are cylinder 15 cm in diameter and 30 cm in height. Water-cement ratios of concrete mixtures 0.4, 0.45 and 0.5. The specimens are cast using natural coarse aggregate and replacing coarse aggregate with 20%, 40%, and 60% recycled coarse aggregate. Concrete specimens are tested after curing at 28 days. Compressive strength results are then used for multiple linear regression by using SPSS version 22 software to get an empirical formula between the compressive strength and percentage of recycled coarse aggregate, the percentage of fly ash and water-cement ratios. Results analysis shows that recycled coarse aggregate can be used until 30 % with fly ash addition 10 %. Reducing in the usage of natural aggregate and cement is suitable with the effort of the environmental conservation.

The increasing of urban development and the decreasing of public awareness to environment promote flood every year for urban cities. Several lakes or ponds are sacrificed due to both urban development and landfilling. Bad habit of society to throw garbage to the lakes affects the society to think that the economic value of lakes could be increased by filling them with the land. These lead to make the lakes become vulnerable to sedimentation from urban activities. Universitas Indonesia as educational institution starts to develop how to manage sedimentation by hydrodynamics and sediment transport modelling. The research uses Resources Modelling Associates (RMA) program to run the model and Agathis Lake as the study area to perform the simulation. It is expected that the program output data could represent the field data, so the validation method should be conducted. The issue to validate the data would be problematic if simulation factors data could not accommodate real-world observed data. This study aims to employ Galerkin method to understand finite element method in Resources Modelling Associates program (RMA) in order to avoid black box when using it and to conduct a field study to perform calibration method of sediment transport modelling in the study area, Agathis Lake that is located in Universitas Indonesia.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered unparalleled political, economic, and social ramifications, exacerbating global food insecurity (FI). To understand the overall impact of the pandemic and how different socio-economic groups were affected, we assessed prevalence and severity of FI in a sample of 18,997 households across seven countries in South America. We employed the Food Insecurity Experience Scale developed by the FAO. Our results showed that pre-pandemic, 4.5% of the sampled population across the entire continent faced Moderate FI, while 0.6% experienced severe FI. During the pandemic, Moderate FI increased to 16.9% (+ 12.4%), and Severe FI to 2.7% (+ 2.1%). By country, pre-pandemic households in Venezuela had the highest prevalence of Moderate FI (9.7%), with Peru experiencing the highest Severe FI frequency (1.1%). Peru had the greatest rise in Moderate (+ 23.9%) and Severe FI (+ 4.6%) during the pandemic. Low-income households, defined as those earning < 2 minimum wages per month, were most susceptible to FI. Uruguayan low-income families exhibited the most significant rise (+ 40.4%) in Moderate FI, while those in Peru experienced an increase of + 9.1% in Severe FI. This study measures the profound and far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on FI in South America. Our findings also emphasise the critical importance of implementing effective public policy interventions to improve resilience against future shocks. This would enable policymakers to develop targeted strategies that address the immediate challenges posed by pandemics as well as laying the groundwork for a more resilient and sustainable food security landscape in the region. © The Author(s) 2025.

Informal worker phenomenon in housing construction project

The informal workers phenomenon on housing construction projects in Indonesia is different from workers in other sectors who would always request as permanent employees. Substantively, the informal workers are disinclined to be bound as permanent employees which different from the general labor paradigm. Hence, the objective of this study is to find out how the labour selection process, the factors that affected their performance, and the suitable wage system to achieve the target completion of housing construction project. The qualitative method is used to uncover and understand the meaning behind the phenomena (numina) of informal workers action and their influence on housing construction project which called phenomenological approach. Five informal workers and two project managers were selected as informants based on predetermined criteria with in-depth interviews. The results showed that the informal worker were more satisfied with the wage based on unit price while working in the housing construction project for the flexibility in working hours. In addition, the developer was also relieved because they only control the quality and the achievement of the project completion time which supported by informal worker leader. Therefore, these findings are beneficial for both of developer and government as policy maker to succeed the housing program in Indonesia.
