Traffic accidents are not just individual tragedies, but they also hinder economic growth, especially in developing countries. Traffic accidents continue to increase every year. One of the reasons is that there are still many roads that haven’t applied the principle of safe roads to their design. The increase in traffic accidents shouldn’t be underestimated because traffic accidents are predictable and prevented. To reduce the risk of accidents, it is necessary to carry out a strategy to improve road safety using existing methods. One of the methods is International Road Assessment programme (IRAP) which was used in this study on Dr. Saharjo Road to achieving star ratings 3. From the observation, it was found the existing road conditions were very good for the vehicle occupant it had reached 4 stars, and it was functional for motorcycles and bicycles it had reached 3 stars, but for pedestrians on the road is still lacking in facilities because it only reaches 2 stars. So, it is necessary to do countermeasures through the existing treatment options to increase the star rating to 3 stars in all road users. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is an emerging geotechnical improvement technology that has received wide attention from researchers around the world. The applications of MICP in geotechnical field including soil improvement, surface resistance from erosion, coastal protection, and slope stabilization have been investigated by previous researchers. This paper presents a review on application of MICP for slope stabilization. Three subtopics were selected to be discussed: application of native bacteria, modified MICP methods, and field-scale studies. This review reveals that (1) MICP has the potential for slope stabilization;(2) native bacteria are ideal for use in MICP for application in slopes located in regions with variable cold climatic conditions;(3) to improve the effectiveness of MICP for slope stability, traditional MICP needs be modified;(4) MICP appears to have the potential to be one of the future landslide mitigation strategies since it works effectively in the field-scale test. Additionally, the recommended further researches in MICP for slope stabilization are: (1) study on the other types of native bacteria for diverse environmental condition is required;(2) to discover the best slope stabilization method, the combination of MICP and other traditional slope stabilization techniques should be investigated;(3) it is critical to investigate the effectiveness of the MICP technology for slope stabilization under various conditions in the field. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Biosorption of chromium by live and dead cells of Bacillus nitratireducens isolated from textile effluent

Bacillus nitratireducens was isolated from textile effluent and showed high tolerance to chromium (Cr), reaching up to a 1000 mg/L MIC value. This research was aimed at utilizing biosorbents from live and dead cells of B. nitratireducens to remove Cr from an aqueous solution. A batch biosorption test was performed, and mechanisms analysis was approached by an adsorption-desorption test, SEM-EDS, and FTIR analysis. Cr removal by dead cells in 25, 50, and 100 mg/L of Cr were 58.99 ± 0.7%, 69.8 ± 0.2%, and 82.87 ± 0.11%, respectively, while that by live cells was 73.08 ± 1.9%, 80.27 ± 6.33%, and 86.17 ± 1.93%, respectively. Live cells showed significantly higher Cr removal and adsorption capacities as compared to dead cells. In all concentrations, absorption contributed more than adsorption to the Cr removal by both live and dead cells. Absorption of Cr was subjected to occur due to passive mechanisms in dead cells while involving some active mechanisms in live cells. SEM-EDS confirmed the detection of Cr on the cell surface, while FTIR revealed the shifting of some peaks after the biosorption test, suggesting interactions between Cr and functional groups. Further TEM analysis is suggested to be conducted as a future approach to reveal the inner structure of cells and confirm the involvement of absorption mechanisms. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

This study proposes a new approach, a communal-based domestic rainwater harvesting (CDRWH) system, which is a new model that combines domestic and communal rainwater harvesting systems. This model is an alternative solution to improve system performance and utilize rainwater overflow from the system. Rainwater runoff from several domestic tanks is channeled to a communal tank to be collected, processed, and redistributed to needy domestic tanks. Overflow from the communal tank is used for groundwater recharge. The CDRWH system model aims to increase water supply, reduce runoff, and conserve groundwater. The model simulation uses daily water balance analysis and yield before spillage algorithm. The simulation scenario uses variations in roof area, number of house occupants, storage tank volume, and rainfall categories: 20 years, wet year, normal year, and dry year. Jagakarsa, an urban area in South Jakarta, was selected for the CDRWH system modeling. The results showed that the CDRWH model significantly improved the performance of the volumetric reliability (VR) and time reliability (TR) systems. In addition, the model could show a comparison of total groundwater recharge (GWR) and groundwater extraction (GWE), where the GWR capacity was higher. This allows centralized rainwater management in communal tanks, thereby reducing groundwater usage. The design of this model is simple. Therefore it can be easily duplicated for application in other locations. © 2025 The Authors

Heavy metal and microplastic pollutions are prevalent in freshwater ecosystems, with many freshwater bodies being contaminated by one or both of these pollutants. Recent studies reported extreme detections of Cd, Pb and Zn, high concentrations of Cr, Pb and Cu and microplastics acting as vectors of pollutants, including heavy metals. Mayflies can serve as bioindicators of heavy metal contamination in freshwater ecosystems because changes in their community structure, physiology, and behaviour can reflect and help predict the concentrations of metals in these environments. This review discusses the ecological alterations induced by tissue metal concentration in mayflies and other macroinvertebrates. As sensitive taxa to heavy metal contamination, mayflies can reflect the impacts of this pollution through their ethology and relationship to the substrate, highlighting issues such as eutrophication, alterations in community structure, inhibitory effects and sediment toxicity. Mayflies are also highly affected by microplastic exposure, which leads to ingestion, bioaccumulation, biomagnification, habitat and community alteration, behavioural changes, physiology alteration and toxicity. Mayflies bioindication metrics for assessing the impact of heavy metals and microplastics include the examination of community alteration, functional feeding behaviour, molecular structure, dietary and toxicity impacts, bioaccumulation and biomagnification and biomarkers. Current challenges for the utilization of mayflies as bioindicators include temporal variations in sensitivity, lack of universally recognised protocols and need for standardised protocols for microplastic analysis. Additionally, the applicability of mayflies as bioindicators may vary across different ecosystems, emphasising the need for selecting suitable indicators that align with the unique characteristics of the ecosystem. © 2024 The Authors

Jagakarsa is an urban area in South Jakarta, Indonesia, that uses groundwater for raw water because there are no clean water supply facilities. The significant increase in the need for clean water due to increasing urbanization threatens groundwater availability to maintain the balance of the surrounding environment. Natural conditions with a deep layer of clay and a dense built environment further increase runoff capacity because water has difficulty seeping into the soil. The intense extraction of groundwater without balancing groundwater recharge results in land subsidence. Until now, there has been no research on this issue. Thus, our research is necessary. This research aims to assess the potential of groundwater infiltration areas in Jagakarsa. Due to limited data, as a first step, we used a qualitative model with MCDM analysis (AHP and MIF methods) integrated with GIS to map potential groundwater recharge areas. The AHP method is explained in detail with a matrix system formula, readers can understand the calculation steps more easily. This study uses five influencing factors: geological formation, land use, slope, rainfall, and soil type. The results show that most study locations have low potential (AHP 74.49 % and MIF 75.25 %) for groundwater recharge. This groundwater recharge potential map was validated using groundwater level measurements. The accuracy of the AHP is 74.51 %, and the MIF method reaches 75.26 %. Therefore, further research is needed to obtain appropriate and effective technology for maintaining groundwater availability. © 2024 The Authors

Concrete is the most popular material construction which can be applied in broad construction projects. In addition, concrete is also featured with robust strength, durability, reflectivity, and versatility. However, concrete is prone to rupture that results in decreasing life span and its quality, so it requires additional cost for repair toward its damage. Self-healing concrete is one of the innovations developed by researchers to solve the cracks in concrete allowing the concrete to recover the cracks through the healing process. A self-healing concrete has more superior mechanical properties compared with normal concrete. Self-healing mechanisms can be divided into two types: autogenic and autonomic self-healing. Autogenic self-healing takes advantage of the formation of calcium carbonate crystals from unhydrated cement or mineral particles. Meanwhile, autonomic self-healing uses a healing agent capsulized into microvascular, microencapsulation, and pallets. Researchers applied self-healing concrete on a macro-scale, such as in panel walls, roof slabs, and river floodgates. This paper uses the literature review method to collect the data about self-healing concrete. This study aims to discuss self-healing concrete, its mechanical properties, durability, and analysis of the use of self-healing concrete from multi-perspective disciplines including economy, health and environment, construction, and public policy in Asia’s countries.

Analysis of hollow concrete column with CFRP rebar using finite element method

The use of concrete in construction is very common even though there are several problems such as structure massive self-weight and it causes the increment of the seismic load carried by structure. Therefore, engineers usually prefer the use of hollow cross-section in reinforced concrete since it gives higher structural efficiency. This research was done to analyze Hollow Concrete Column (HCC) using finite element method with the help of MIDAS FEA application to obtain an efficient and effective model ratio between the hollow-core variation which use CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) as rebar. The analysis result shows that for the solid cross-section sample, the use of CFRP correlates to the needs of force resistance because the effectivity curve shows that the line intersects with one another at some variety moment capacity. It also shows even though the effectivity increases with the increment of the hollow ratio, there is a capacity reduction of +5.5% for each 5% increment. From the analysis, it shows that the hollow sample with CFRP rebar will give the best effectivity rate at a 30 % hollow-core ratio.

The traffic collision is an unforeseen occurrence resulting in casualties, property damage as well as financial costs to both society and the individuals involved. In Indonesia, the accident count is still rising every year. The number of accidents is in line with the number of vehicles produced and sold Various attempts have been made to improve road safety, especially by adopting the IRAP model. IRAP is a persuasive handling activity before the occurrence of an accident. Traffic condition will be the determining factor for SRS calculation. Hereby the base score of 4 varieties according to SRS calculation on long Jenderal Sudirman Street, 4.1 (Vehicle Occupant), 4.2 (Motorcyclist), 3 (Bicyclist), and 2.8 (Pedestrian). Star rating growth can be achieved by improving some substantial attributes such as a pedestrian fence, cycling sign, 40 Kmph speed limit sign, and intersection sign. The result of the BCR calculation shows a value of >1 which signifies that it is worth doing by improving the 4 attributes. Final star rating after being handled yield a significant score of 4.6 (Vehicle Occupant), 4.2 (Motorcyclist), 3 (Bicyclist) dan 5 (Pedestrian).

Construction project is one of the activities consisting of risks. The stakeholders involved as the implementing partners must recognize the various risks occurring during the construction processes. The conditions needs to be early identified to prevent and minimize the risks. One of the risks is construction addition budget or financial risk. This study aimed to analyze the correlation of financial risk variables on project construction budget of building infrastructure. The data collected in this study were primary data, namely questionnaires, and secondary data. The data was processed by using Spearman rank correlation method. The output of this study explained that there are 4 (four) correlations between financial risk variable and project construction budget. The material factor (X2) had strong correlation to the project construction budget.
