Shock Hugoniot compression curve for water has been measured up to less than 1 GPa. Plane and steady shock wave is produced in water by the flat plate impact of a projectile accelerated up to 500m/s by a compressed gas gun. To measure shock Hugoniot in this pressure range in higher precision, a new experimental procedure was proposed, which is based on the very large pressure dependence of the refractive index of water upon compression. By using this method, shock compression curve was determined. It was confirmed that within the pressure range covered in this experiment, shock-particle velocity Hugoniot can be described by a linear relation with a large slope. Shock temperature was calculated by using the obtained Hugoniot data combined with the values of thermodynamical variables.

There is a limit of recognition performance for dialogue speech using acoustic models built only with read speech, because various acoustic and linguistic phenomena, which reflect, the characteristics of spontaneous speech, are observed in the dialogue speech. In this paper, we investigated the differences of acoustic properties which cause the limit among isolated words, read speech and spontaneous speech. Firstly, the dialogue speech was compared with the read speech through acoustic analyses. Next, the acoustic models were separately built with each of the speech databases. The recognition performance was experimentally evaluated using the acoustic models and the relations of the differences of the performance to those of the acoustic features observed in the analyses were investigated quantitatively. The effectiveness of speaker adaptation was also investigated in the same manner.

This paper presents a presentation semantic model that is based on the augmented transition network (ATN) for asynchronous distance learning system called Java-based Integrated Asynchronous Distance Learning (JIADL) system. The JIADL system can support diverse asynchronous distance learning services. Unlike most related work in the literature, we integrate RealPlayer and Java technology so that the superiority of both models can be complemented. A course sample is illustrated to validate the effectiveness of the paradigm proposed. How to use the proposed multimedia ATN model to model the diverse requirements of a distance learning multimedia presentation is also discussed. The multimedia ATN model is powerful in modeling the asynchronization for distance learning multimedia presentations. Furthermore, in addition to supporting asynchronous distance learning, our system can be applied to a wide range of potential value-added applications.

The Tibet air-shower array operating at Yangbajing (4300 m above sea level) is sensitive to gamma-ray air showers at energies as low as 3 TeV. The observation of the Moon’s shadow has provided a direct check of the angular resolution, the energy estimation and the systematic pointing error of this air-shower array. Using these data, we have searched for multi-TeV gamma-ray emission from 27 SNRs located within 10 kpc distance in the declination band of −10° to +70°. The signal from the Crab Nebula was detected at 5.5 σ level. The intensity observed is (4.61±0.90)×10−12 cm−2 s−1 TeV−1 at 3 TeV. No significant DC excess was found from any of these SNRs except from the Crab Nebula.
