Mounting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) holds promise for improving traditional terrestrial network performance. Unlike conventional methods deploying passive RIS on UAVs, this study delves into the efficacy of an aerial active RIS (AARIS). Specifically, the downlink transmission of an AARIS network is investigated, where the base station (BS) leverages rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) for effective interference management and benefits from the support of an AARIS for jointly amplifying and reflecting the BS’s transmit signals. Considering both the nontrivial energy consumption of the active RIS and the limited energy storage of the UAV, we propose an innovative element selection strategy for optimizing the on/off status of RIS elements, which adaptively and remarkably manages the system’s power consumption. To this end, a resource management problem is formulated, aiming to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS, the element activation, the phase shift and the amplification factor at the RIS, the RSMA common data rate at users, as well as the UAV’s trajectory. Due to the dynamicity nature of UAV and user mobility, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm is designed for resource allocation, utilizing meta-learning to adaptively handle fast time-varying system dynamics. Simulations indicate that incorporating an active RIS at the UAV leads to substantial EE gain, compared to passive RIS-aided UAV. We observe the superiority of the RSMA-based AARIS system in terms of EE, compared to existing approaches adopting non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). © 2024, CC BY.

The Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G wireless networks have made it possible to connect intelligent devices with each other and to the Internet. Different kind of networks and applications are appearing and they support us in everyday life. The Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have emerged as a good approach for edge computing and last miles networks. They can be applied in different scenarios and areas with difficult terrains. In order to deploy reliable and highly connected WMNs at low cost, we optimize the connectivity of mesh routers and the coverage mesh clients. In our previous work, we designed and implemented a hybrid intelligent system called WMN-PSODGA, which integrates two intelligent algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Distributed Genetic Algorithm (DGA). In this work, we implement in our system Two Islands and Subway distributions of mesh clients and evaluate the performance of different router replacement methods considering two selection methods: roulette wheel and random. We compare the simulation results for each selection and router replacement method and find the best scenarios in terms of coverage, connectivity, and load balancing. For each combination, the achieved network connectivity and client coverage are 100%, but the best scenarios in terms of load balancing are when we combine the random selection method and Constriction Method (CM) for the Two Islands distribution, and the random selection method and Random Inertia Weight Method (RIWM) for the Subway distribution. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Tile-based streaming and super resolution (SR) are two representative technologies adopted to improve bandwidth efficiency of 360° video streaming. The former allows selective downloading of contents in the user viewport by splitting the video into multiple independently decodable tiles. The latter leverages client-side computation to enhance the received video to higher quality using advanced neural network models. In this work, we propose a Collaborated Streaming and Enhancement (CSE) adaptation framework for mobile 360° videos, which integrates super resolution with tile-based streaming to optimize the user experience with dynamic bandwidth and limited computing capability. To effectively enhance the tile-based video streaming through SR, we propose to adaptively group the tiles for quality enhancement adapting to the content similarity. We also identify and address several key design issues to integrate SR into tile-based video streaming including unified video quality assessment, computational complexity model for super resolution, and buffer analysis considering the interplay between transmission and enhancement. We further formulate the quality-of-experience (QoE) maximization problem for mobile 360° video streaming and propose a rate adaptation algorithm to make the best decisions for download and for enhancement based on the Lyapunov optimization theory. Extensive evaluation results validate the superiority of our proposed approach, which demonstrates stable performance with considerable QoE improvement, while enabling a trade-off between playback smoothness and video quality. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Cloud technology is advancing rapidly because of it's capability to replace the traditional computing techniques. Cloud offers various kinds of services for the user that are being used. In this research paper, storage as a service provided by cloud is examined as the data of the owner is being shared to the cloud so we have to ensure that data integrity is being maintained. In order to have a robust mechanism that offers a secure pathway for sharing data different encryption algorithms have been utilized. We investigate all the suitable algorithms with various combinations because any single algorithm is prone to some kind of attack. Testing of these algorithms is done by analyzing the parameters such as time required for execution, use of computational resources, key management, etc. Finally the best one that stands and fulfill all the criteria in a reasonable manner is selected for the purpose of storage. © 2021 IEEE.

To guarantee the low-congestion performance and quality of service (QoS) requirements of multi-services in Mega Low Earth Orbit Constellation Networks (MLEOCN), this paper focuses on the comprehensive communication link model in MLEOCN, commencing from users to access satellites, relayed by relay satellites, and finally delivered to the gateway by feeder satellites. Aiming at the problems of high congestion and low throughput in traditional path planning algorithms, we innovatively propose a multi-objective optimization service-correlated path optimization algorithm based on stochastic hill climbing strategy (MSCPO-SHCS). The algorithm initially achieves the joint optimization of three metrics through regular mapping and judicious weighting. Subsequently, it assesses the interplane hop via geometric parameter theory analysis (GPTA), then decouples the large-scale mixed integer optimization problem into the integer optimization problem superimposed linear programming problem, and ultimately employs the stochastic hill climbing strategy (SHCS) for path intelligent optimization. Based on the path Gaussianity assumption, we theoretically prove and numerically verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm. The simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm boosts the throughput and load balancing coefficient compared with the greedy strategy, service-uncorrelated, minimum hop count, and resource allocation optimization. Additionally, it decreases the hop count compared with the maximum throughput and maximum balancing coefficient and maintains the optimal overall performance. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

A previous study [Entropy 25.4 (2023): 590] proposed a quantum secure multi-party summation protocol wherein n participants could obtain the modulo-2 summation result using single photons and single-particle operations. Owing to the absence of an entanglement state, this protocol was more practical than other quantum summation protocols that used entanglement properties. Thus, this study investigated the claim that this proposed protocol prevented the participants’ secret inputs from being disclosed. It was found that the previously proposed protocol was vulnerable to a quantum Trojan horse attack owing to the circular qubit transmission mode. Using a security loophole, this study proposed an attack strategy that allowed an outside attacker to steal any participant’s secret input without being detected by a third party and participants. In addition, a simulation experiment was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed attack and evaluate the number of quantum Trojan horse probes that the attacker must inject into regular qubit sequences. Finally, a solution was proposed by modifying the protocol to securely prevent quantum Trojan horse attacks. © 2024 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted mobile edge computing (MEC) is emerging as a promising paradigm to provide aerial-terrestrial computing services in close proximity to mobile devices (MDs). However, meeting the demands of computation-intensive and delay-sensitive tasks for MDs poses several challenges, including the demand-supply contradiction between MDs and MEC servers, the demand-supply heterogeneity between MDs and MEC servers, the trajectory control requirements on energy efficiency and timeliness, and the different time-scale dynamics of the network. To address these issues, we first present a hierarchical architecture by incorporating terrestrial-aerial computing capabilities and leveraging UAV flexibility. Furthermore, we formulate a joint computing resource allocation, computation offloading, and trajectory control problem to maximize the system utility. Since the problem is a non-convex and NP-hard mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), we propose a two-timescale joint computing resource allocation, computation offloading, and trajectory control (TJCCT) approach for solving the problem. In the short timescale, we propose a price-incentive model for on-demand computing resource allocation and a matching mechanism-based method for computation offloading. In the long timescale, we propose a convex optimization-based method for UAV trajectory control. Besides, we theoretically prove the stability, optimality, and polynomial complexity of TJCCT. Extended simulation results demonstrate that the proposed TJCCT outperforms the comparative algorithms in terms of the system utility, average processing rate, average completion delay, and average completion ratio. Background: Knowledge graphs and ontologies are becoming increasingly important as technical solutions for Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable data and metadata (FAIR Guiding Principles). We discuss four challenges that impede the use of FAIR knowledge graphs. Results: Semantic units have the potential to solve the challenges by structuring a knowledge graph into identifiable and semantically meaningful subgraphs. Each semantic unit is represented by its own resource, instantiates a corresponding semantic unit class, and can be implemented as a FAIR Digital Object and a nanopublication in RDF/OWL and property graphs. We distinguish statement and compound units as basic categories of semantic units. Statement units represent smallest, independent propositions that are semantically meaningful for a human reader. They consist of one or more triples and mathematically partition a knowledge graph. We distinguish assertional, contingent (prototypical), and universal statement units as basic types of statement units and propose representational schemes and formal semantics for them (including for absence statements, negations, and cardinality restrictions) that do not involve blank nodes and that translate back to OWL. Compound units, on the other hand, represent semantically meaningful collections of semantic units and we distinguish various types of compound units, representing different levels of representational granularity, different types of granularity trees, and different frames of reference. Conclusions: Semantic units support making statements about statements, can be used for graph-alignment, subgraph-matching, knowledge graph profiling, and for managing access restrictions to sensitive data. Organizing the graph into semantic units supports the separation of ontological, diagnostic (i.e., referential), and discursive information, and it also supports the differentiation of multiple frames of reference. © 2023, CC BY.

In this paper, we study a remote source coding scenario in which binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation sources are corrupted by additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). An intermediate node, such as a relay, receives these observations and performs additional compression to balance complexity and relevance. This problem can be further formulated as an information bottleneck (IB) problem with Bernoulli sources and Gaussian mixture observations. However, no closed-form solution exists for this IB problem. To address this challenge, we propose a unified achievable scheme that employs three different compression/quantization strategies for intermediate node processing by using two-level quantization, multi-level deterministic quantization, and soft quantization with the hyperbolic tangent (tanh) function, respectively. In addition, we extend our analysis to the vector mixture Gaussian observation problem and explore its application in machine learning for binary classification with information leakage. Numerical evaluations show that the proposed scheme has a near-optimal performance over various signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs), compared to the Blahut-Arimoto (BA) algorithm, and has better performance than some existing numerical methods such as the information dropout approach. Furthermore, experiments conducted on the realistic MNIST dataset also validate the superior classification accuracy of our method compared to the information dropout approach. © 2023, CC BY.
