With the continuous development of Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRSs) and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), their combination has become foundational technologies to complement the terrestrial network by providing communication enhancement services for large-scale users. This article provides a comprehensive overview of IRS-assisted UAV communications for 6th-Generation (6G) networks. First, the applications supported by IRS-assisted UAV communications for 6G networks are introduced, and key issues originated from applications supported by IRSs and UAVs for 6G networks are summarized and analyzed. Then, prototypes and main technologies related to the integration of IRSs and UAVs are introduced. Driven by applications and technologies of IRS-assisted UAV communications, existing solutions in the realms of energy-constrained communications, secure communications, and enhanced communications are summarized, and corresponding empirical lessons are provided. Finally, we discuss some research challenges and open issues in IRS-assisted UAV communications, offering directions for the future development. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) has emerged as a pivotal enabling technology for next-generation wireless networks. Despite the distinct signal design requirements of sensing and communication (S&C) systems, shifting the symbol-wise pulse shaping (SWiPS) framework from communication-only systems to ISAC poses significant challenges in signal design and processing This paper addresses these challenges by examining the ambiguity function (AF) of the SWiPS ISAC signal and introducing a novel pulse shaping design for single-carrier ISAC transmission. We formulate optimization problems to minimize the average integrated sidelobe level (ISL) of the AF, as well as the weighted ISL (WISL) while satisfying inter-symbol interference (ISI), out-of-band emission (OOBE), and power constraints. Our contributions include establishing the relationship between the AFs of both the random data symbols and signaling pulses, analyzing the statistical characteristics of the AF, and developing algorithmic frameworks for pulse shaping optimization using successive convex approximation (SCA) and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) approaches. Numerical results are provided to validate our theoretical analysis, which demonstrate significant performance improvements in the proposed SWiPS design compared to the root-raised cosine (RRC) pulse shaping for conventional communication systems. Generative AI (GAI) has emerged as a significant advancement in artificial intelligence, renowned for its language and image generation capabilities. This paper presents "AIGenerated Everything" (AIGX), a concept that extends GAI beyond mere content creation to real-time adaptation and control across diverse technological domains. In networking, AIGX collaborates closely with physical, data link, network, and application layers to enhance real-time network management that responds to various system and service settings as well as application and user requirements. Networks, in return, serve as crucial components in further AIGX capability optimization through the AIGX lifecycle, i.e., data collection, distributed pre-training, and rapid decision-making, thereby establishing a mutually enhancing interplay. Moreover, we offer an in-depth case study focused on power allocation to illustrate the interdependence between AIGX and networking systems. Through this exploration, the article analyzes the significant role of GAI for networking, clarifies the ways networks augment AIGX functionalities, and underscores the virtuous interactive cycle they form. This article paves the way for subsequent future research aimed at fully unlocking the potential of GAI and networks. © 2023, CC BY.

In mobile edge computing (MEC), task offloading can significantly reduce task execution latency and energy consumption of end user (EU). However, edge server (ES) resources are limited, necessitating efficient allocation to ensure the sustainable and healthy development for MEC systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic pricing mechanism based near-optimal resource allocation for elastic edge offloading. First, we construct a resource pricing model and accordingly develop the utility functions for both EU and ES, the optimal pricing model parameters are derived by optimizing the utility functions. In the meantime, our theoretical analysis reveals that the EU’s utility function reaches a local maximum within the search range, but exhibits barely growth with increased resource allocation beyond this point. To this end, we further propose the Dynamic Inertia and Speed-Constrained particle swarm optimization (DISC-PSO) algorithm, which efficiently identifies the near-optimal resource allocation. Comprehensive simulation results validate the effectiveness of DISC-PSO, demonstrating that it significantly outperforms existing schemes by reducing the average number of iterations to reach a near-optimal solution by 92.11%, increasing the final user utility function value by 0.24%, and decreasing the variance of results by 95.45%. Analysis of the spectral properties of glacier surface facies representing glaciological zones is an established method for characterizing facies. This necessitates a reliable estimation of spectral reflectance from image pixels using appropriate atmospheric correction methods. Improving spatial resolution by pansharpening may improve visual detection of facies, but the translation of visual perception to algorithmic classification is unclear. In this study, we analyzed the changes in spectral reflectance by comparing one model-based and two image-based methods of atmospheric corrections using very high-resolution (VHR) WorldView-2/3 satellite data for selected glaciers in Svalbard and the Himalayas. Two pansharpening methods were then applied followed by 12 machine learning and three object-based image analysis (OBIA) rule sets. A combination of wavelength ranges representing traditional and recent spectrums were tested using four different spectral band combinations. In total, we compared 8100 surface facies maps to understand the impact of every image processing routine and mapping method on the final thematic categorization of facies. Broad conclusions suggest that VHR data does not require shortwave infrared ranges;OBIA is more accurate and less sensitive to image processing variations;machine learning is more efficient but readily influenced by image processing. A spatial-spectral information OBIA ruleset yielded the highest overall accuracy (0.86). Segmentation parameters were found to be consistent across study regions and may be transferable outside the current study. This study demonstrates the need for testing image processing induced variations for cryospheric applications and may be assessed on open satellite data for long-Term standardized mapping of glacier surface facies. © 2023 SPIE. Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is easy to be attacked than wired networks due to its characteristics of open network topology, high mobility, lack of physical security and independent management. This paper analyzes the impact of routing attacks on the performance of the AODV and AOMDV routing protocol under several collaborative routing attack scenarios (blackhole and wormhole). We conclude that AOMDV is better than AODV in case of collaborative attacks and we show that collaborative Blackhole and Wormhole attacks can affect much performance of the network, especially in the case when we do not recognize the location area of malicious nodes. © 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper investigates an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted multi-input multi-output (MIMO) simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system with multiple power splitting receivers (PSRs). We aim at maximizing the weighted sum-rate (WSR) of the system through jointly designing the PS ratio of each PSR, the active transmit beamforming (ATB) of the access point (AP) and the passive reflective beamforming (PRB) of the IRS, while the constraints on the AP, PSRs and IRS are satisfied. However, since the variables are intricately coupled and the constraints are conflicting, the formulated problem is non-convex. We propose a framework to jointly design the AP, the PSRs and the IRS. Particularly, first we transform this problem into an equivalently form based on fractional programming methods. Then, we decompose the transformed problem into several subproblems, and more important, we exploit the successive convex approximation method to recast the non-convex constraints, so as to transform the subproblems as convex form and then solve them alternately. Simulation results indicate that the proposed algorithm achieves a substantial improvement performance gain over baseline schemes. © 2021 IEEE.

Brain networks typically exhibit characteristic synchronization patterns where several synchronized clusters coexist. On the other hand, neurological disorders are considered to be related to pathological synchronization such as excessive synchronization of large populations of neurons. Motivated by these phenomena, this paper presents two approaches to control the cluster synchronization of Kuramoto oscillators. One is based on the use of pacemakers to the clusters, and the other is based on feeding back the mean phases to the clusters. We first show conditions on the pacemaker weights and the feedback gains for the network to achieve cluster synchronization. Then, we propose a method to find optimal feedback gains through convex optimization. A numerical example demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

The recent development of metasurfaces, which may enable several use cases by modifying the propagation environment, is anticipated to have a substantial effect on the performance of 6G wireless communications. Metasurface elements can produce essentially passive sub-wavelength scattering to enable a smart radio environment. STAR-RIS, which refers to reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) that can transmit and reflect concurrently (STAR), is gaining popularity. In contrast to the widely studied RIS, which can only reflect the wireless signal and serve users on the same side as the transmitter, the STAR-RIS can both reflect and refract (transmit), enabling 360-degree wireless coverage, thus serving users on both sides of the transmitter. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the STAR-RIS, with a focus on the most recent schemes for diverse use cases in 6G networks, resource allocation, and performance evaluation. We begin by laying the foundation for RIS (passive, active, STAR-RIS), and then discuss the STAR-RIS protocols, advantages, and applications. In addition, we categorize the approaches within the domain of use scenarios, which includes increasing coverage, enhancing physical layer security (PLS), maximizing sum rate, improving energy efficiency (EE), and reducing interference. Next, we will discuss the various strategies for resource allocation and measures for performance evaluation. We aimed to elaborate, compare, and evaluate the literature in terms of setup, channel characteristics, methodology, and objectives. In this work, we introduce a novel hybrid joint optimization framework specifically designed for enhancing the performance of consumer electronics in vehicular networks using a transmissive reconfigurable intelligent surface (T-RIS)-mounted unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system. The UAV employs the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) protocol to broadcast data to multiple ground devices, ensuring efficient communication. Our primary objective is to maximize the overall system sum rate while adhering to key constraints such as the rate requirements of ground devices, UAV battery capacity, and UAV coordinate boundaries. The optimization challenge of maximizing the system's sum rate is inherently non-convex and complex. To address this, we decompose the problem into manageable subproblems. The beamforming optimization problem is tackled using successive convex approximation and semi-definite programming techniques, allowing for effective handling of non-convexity. For power allocation, we employ the Lagrangian dual method along with the sub-gradient technique, ensuring optimal power distribution among devices. To optimize the UAV's location, we propose a dueling-based double deep reinforcement learning (D3RL) framework. This approach effectively combines all computed solutions, resulting in a comprehensive joint optimization strategy. Simulation results highlight the exceptional performance of the proposed framework. Specifically, optimizing the UAV's location leads to a substantial performance gain of up to 65.9% compared to a system where only beamforming and power allocation are optimized with the UAV positioned at the center of the service area. These findings underscore the potential of our framework in advancing consumer electronics connectivity in vehicular networks. © 2025 IEEE.
