This paper investigates the performance of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) assisted semi-grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access network with randomly distributed users. By deploying STARS, the transmit signals of grant-based user (GBU) and grant-free users (GFUs) can be exquisitely adjusted to reduce interference. We propose a maximum channel scheduling (MCS) protocol that allows a GFU to access GBU’s channel with the assistance of STARS. In particular, the impacts of perfect/imperfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC/ipSIC) on MCS protocol are taken into account. To characterize the performance of STARS aided MCS (STARS-MCS) network, we derive the expressions of outage probability for GBU and GFU with pSIC/ipSIC. By applying convolution theorem and Laplace transform, the asymptotic expressions of outage probability and diversity orders for GBU and GFU are attained. We further design a STARS-based power control (SPC) strategy to eliminate the outage probability error floor and improve the outage performance. Numerical results show that: 1) The performance of STARS-MCS outperforms the existing benchmarks in terms of outage probability and system throughput;2) The SPC strategy can effectively improve the performance of the STARS-MCS network and eliminate the outage probability error floor at high signal-to-noise ratios;and 3) By adjusting reflection and transmission coefficients of STARS, the outage performance of GBU and GFU can be greatly enhanced. © 2025 IEEE. The development of smart cities enhances the quality of life for many people by promoting digital interconnection, which encourages dependability and accessibility in cities. Cities have multiple security issues to deal with, as well as kidnapping, rape, child abuse, and violence, completely of which stand on the rise globally. This kind of crime constantly disturbs the victim not only physically and mentally but also forces them to attempt suicide, which can ruin the happiness of many families in a city. Conventional methods are insufficient to safeguard a city from crime and provide a secure way of life for everyone, which is depraved for society and their day-to-day activities. However, this paper, first analyzes the different types of criminal activities in Bangladesh, such as kidnapping, rape, murder, and child abuse, and here offer various technological solutions, to protect cities against the worst crimes, using technologies like cybersecurity and the Internet of Things (IoT) based technologies. With the help of various technological solutions, a city becomes safer while also achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDG's) number 11, which promotes sustainable cities and communities. This paper clarifies how to reduce criminal activities by making use of a range of technologies, which benefit the country and improve people's quality of life. © 2024 IEEE.

People usually forget the details of life experiences and encounter situations where they require to recall their past experiences. Therefore, lifelog retrieval turns out to be an emerging task in the AI community. Nowadays, people can record their life experiences by capturing images through wearable devices, writing blog posts, and so on. These personal big data stored in digital format can be considered lifelogs for retrieval. In this work, we focus on constructing a visual lifelog retrieval system that is able to efficiently find related images given the input textual queries. The core challenge of visual lifelog retrieval with textual queries comes from the semantic gap between visual and textual data. In this work, we propose LifeConcept, an interactive lifelog search system that is aimed at not only accelerating the retrieval process but also fetching more precise results. To reduce the semantic gap, we incorporate visual and textual concepts from images into our system utilizing pre-trained textual embeddings. Moreover, we propose a concept recommendation method enabling users to set up the related conditions for their requirements efficiently and search the desired images with appropriate query terms based on the suggestion. Experimental results show that textual concepts from images detected by CV models improve the retrieval results. We further employ annotators to label captions of images for investigating the difference between model-generated captions and human-labeled captions. The human-annotated dataset is released to facilitate future study of visual lifelog retrieval. Four research questions are discussed to explore the characteristic of models and humans interpreting the first-person images captured by wearable cameras. Broadcasting is an information dissemination problem in an interconnection network where one node, called the originator, must distribute a message to all other nodes by placing a series of calls along the links of the network. Every time the informed nodes aid the originator in distributing the message. Finding the broadcast time of any node in an arbitrary network is NP-complete. Polynomial time solutions are known only for a few classes of networks. In this paper, we consider chains of rings. We present a linear algorithm to find the broadcast time of arbitrary chains of rings and closed chains of rings. © 2023 IEEE.

Broadcasting is an information dissemination primitive where a message is passed from one node (called originator) to all other nodes in the network. With the increasing interest in interconnection networks, an extensive amount of research was dedicated to broadcasting. Two main research goals of this area are finding inexpensive network structures that maintain efficient broadcasting and finding the broadcast time for well-known and widely used network topologies. In the scope of this paper, we will mainly focus on determining the broadcast time and the optimal broadcasting scheme for graphs. Determination of the broadcast time of a node x in an arbitrary network G is known to be NP-hard. Polynomial time solutions are known only for a few classes of networks. There also exist various heuristic and approximation algorithms for different network topologies. In this paper, we will consider networks that can be represented as split graphs. We will present a polynomial time 2-approximation algorithm for the broadcast time problem and will introduce an algorithm for generating optimal or near-optimal broadcast schemes in split graphs. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

When analyzing the spread of viruses, epidemiologists often need to identify the location of infected hosts. This information can be found in public databases, such as GenBank [3], however, information provided in these databases are usually limited to the country or state level. More fine-grained localization information requires phylogeographers to manually read relevant scientific articles. In this work we propose an approach to automate the process of place name identification from medical (epidemiology) articles. The focus of this paper is to propose a deep learning based model for toponym detection and experiment with the use of external linguistic features and domain specific information. The model was evaluated using a collection of 105 epidemiology articles from PubMed Central [33] provided by the recent SemEval task 12 [28]. Our best detection model achieves an F1 score of 80.13 %, a significant improvement compared to the state of the art of 69.84 %. These results underline the importance of domain specific embedding as well as specific linguistic features in toponym detection in medical journals. © 2023, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper introduces a real-time collaborative sensing scheme for wireless sensor networks in time-varying environments. The objective is to maximize the sensors' performance by effectively allocating communication resources for data sharing. Specifically, we utilize digital twins (DTs) to characterize dynamic collaborative sensing demands for each sensor through data-driven methods. Building on the DT design, we propose a resource allocation scheme to optimize the communication resources allocated at each stage of collaborative sensing and determine the most effective collaborative sensing policy. By profiling sensors using DTs, the network controller can effectively coordinate the sensors without exhaustively exploring all collaborative sensing policies. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme in optimizing the sensing performance for all sensors. © 2024 IEEE.

With the advances of quantum computing the security of existing cryptographic frameworks is increasingly at risk. Accordingly, in the present study, we investigate the integration of post-quantum cryptographic algorithms into Hyperledger Fabric, a blockchain framework, to safeguard it against emerging quantum threats. To this end, a modified Cryptogen tool was developed to generate X.509 certificates with both classical and post-quantum cryptographic keys. Furthermore, using tools like Hyperledger Caliper and Prometheus for empirical analysis, we demonstrate that this hybrid approach effectively strengthens security without affecting system performance. These results not only improve the security of Hyperledger Fabric, but also offer a practical guide for adding post-quantum cryptography to blockchain technologies. © 2019 IEEE.

Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) play a crucial role within the broader Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) ecosystem, supporting seamless connectivity and information exchange between medical devices and systems to improve healthcare monitoring and management. WBANs are increasingly favored as a cost-effective and efficient solution for remote health data monitoring in smart E-healthcare systems. WBAN facilitates the collection and transmission of critical and confidential patient health information. However, mobility and open communication channels in WBAN present security vulnerabilities, such as unauthorized access and data leakage. Furthermore, due to the limited resources of wearable devices, it is crucial to develop a lightweight protocol to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of transmitted data. In this paper, we propose a secure and efficient mutual authentication and key agreement scheme that employs a lightweight cryptographic hash function and straightforward XOR operations for wearable devices in WBAN based on fog computing. We conducted a comparative analysis of the existing methods, considering the performance costs and security requirements. The proposed scheme is shown both efficient and robust, making it suitable for practical applications. © 2023 IEEE.
