HotReRAM: A Performance-Power-Thermal Simulation Framework for ReRAM Based Caches

This paper proposes a comprehensive thermal modeling and simulation framework, HotReRAM, for resistive RAM (ReRAM)-based caches that is verified against a memristor circuit-level model. The simulation is driven by power traces based on cache accesses for detailed temperature modeling over time. HotReRAM models power at a fine-grain level and generates temperature traces for different cache regions together with detailed analyses of thermal stability, retention time and write latency. Combining HotReRAM with gem5, a full-system simulator, and NVSim, a power simulator, for ReRAM enables temporal and spatial modeling of crucial ReRAM characteristics. This integration allows designers and architects to analyze various cache characteristics within a single cache bank and address thermal-induced issues when designing ReRAM caches. Our simulation results for an 8MiB ReRAM cache show that the spatial thermal variance can be as high as 7K for a single cache bank, whereas the temporal thermal variance is more than 40K. Such temperature variances impact retention time with a standard deviation of 3.9 to 10.2 for a set of benchmark applications, where the write latency can increase by up to 14.5%. © 2025 IEEE. In this paper, we propose the Class Attention in Video Transformer (CavT), an end-to-end method designed to process both long and short variant-length videos for student engagement prediction. CavT introduces a single vector for class embedding and incorporates the Binary-Order Representatives Sampling (BorS) technique to augment the dataset by adding multiple video sequences. Our method outperforms the state-of-the-art with MSE values of 0.0495 on the EmotiW-EP and 0.0377 on the DAiSEE datasets, providing a robust and scalable solution for engagement prediction. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Wireless federated learning (FL) is a collaborative machine learning (ML) framework in which wireless client-devices independently train their ML models and send the locally trained models to the FL server for aggregation. In this paper, we consider the coexistence of privacy-sensitive client-devices and privacy-insensitive yet computing-resource constrained client-devices, and propose an FL framework with a hybrid centralized training and local training. Specifically, the privacy-sensitive client-devices perform local ML model training and send their local models to the FL server. Each privacy-insensitive client-device can have two options, i.e., (i) conducting a local training and then sending its local model to the FL server, and (ii) directly sending its local data to the FL server for the centralized training. The FL server, after collecting the data from the privacy-insensitive client-devices (which choose to upload the local data), conducts a centralized training with the received datasets. The global model is then generated by aggregating (i) the local models uploaded by the client-devices and (ii) the model trained by the FL server centrally. Focusing on this hybrid FL framework, we firstly analyze its convergence feature with respect to the client-devices' selections of local training or centralized training. We then formulate a joint optimization of client-devices' selections of the local training or centralized training, the FL training configuration (i.e., the number of the local iterations and the number of the global iterations), and the bandwidth allocations to the client-devices, with the objective of minimizing the overall latency for reaching the FL convergence. Despite the non-convexity of the joint optimization problem, we identify its layered structure and propose an efficient algorithm to solve it. In this paper, we address the critical aspect of hardware ageing effects in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), whereby the problem of extending the RIS's life cycle under the impact of non-residual stochastic hardware impairment is considered. Through the replication of the RIS hardware and diverse wireless environments within a statistical simulation environment, we formulate an electronic maintenance framework (EMF) for RIS, where we incorporate non-residual impairments through stochastic modeling and determine the electronic reliability of the system. Accordingly, we derive optimal analytical solutions within the EMF to determine whether systematic maintenance of the RIS hardware should be done immediately or postponed in order to extend the expected life cycle of the RIS system. Furthermore, for the scenario with imperfect maintenance of the RIS-aided system, a reliable communication framework (RCF) is also introduced with residual impairments to assess the error probability of the RIS-aided communication. The RCF is established by deriving the distribution of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio in the presence of residual hardware impairment arising due to imperfect maintenance of the RIS system. Extensive numerical examples are provided to elucidate the derived solutions and illustrate the reliability performance of the proposed framework under hardware impairments. © 2020 IEEE.

With the rapid advancement of physical-layer security technology, the covert and secure communication has become crucial in safeguarding wireless communication systems. In this article, we propose a joint covert and secure transmission scheme for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) assisted cooperative nonorthogonal multiple access (CNOMA) systems. In the CNOMA system, a greedy relay transmits the confidential information to the far user (Carol), with the assistance of the near user (Bob). Meanwhile, as a SWIPT node, Bob is self-sustained by harvesting energy from relay. What is more, a warden (Alice) and noncolluding eavesdroppers (Eves) always attempt to detect and capture the confidential information, respectively. To counteract the attacks from Alice and Eves, a jamming-assisted scheme is employed. For the proposed system model, we derive closed-form expressions for the detection error probability (DEP) and the average minimum detection error probability (AMDEP) of Alice. Additionally, closed-form expressions for the outage probability (OP) of users and the intercept probability (IP) of Eves are obtained. Furthermore, to maximize the effective covert rate (ECR) of Carol, an optimization problem is formulated, subject to covertness and security constraints. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the impact of the system parameters on covert and secure performance, with the results showing perfect agreement with the theoretical analysis. © 2014 IEEE.

The fourth industrial revolution has led to the development and application of health monitoring sensors that are characterized by digitalization and intelligence. These sensors have extensive applications in medical care, personal health management, elderly care, sports, and other fields, providing people with more convenient and real-time health services. However, these sensors face limitations such as noise and drift, difficulty in extracting useful information from large amounts of data, and lack of feedback or control signals. The development of artificial intelligence has provided powerful tools and algorithms for data processing and analysis, enabling intelligent health monitoring, and achieving high-precision predictions and decisions. By integrating the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, and health monitoring sensors, it becomes possible to realize a closed-loop system with the functions of real-time monitoring, data collection, online analysis, diagnosis, and treatment recommendations. This review focuses on the development of healthcare artificial sensors enhanced by intelligent technologies from the aspects of materials, device structure, system integration, and application scenarios. Specifically, this review first introduces the great advances in wearable sensors for monitoring respiration rate, heart rate, pulse, sweat, and tears;implantable sensors for cardiovascular care, nerve signal acquisition, and neurotransmitter monitoring;soft wearable electronics for precise therapy. Then, the recent advances in volatile organic compound detection are highlighted. Next, the current developments of human-machine interfaces, AI-enhanced multimode sensors, and AI-enhanced self-sustainable systems are reviewed. Last, a perspective on future directions for further research development is also provided. From prior studies on eXtreme Apprenticeship (XA), it can be seen that XA has emerged as an innovative and effective educational approach. The technology in computer science evolves rapidly and XA tackles the gap between University education and industry development. Additionally, distance learning by multimedia is more and more important, sometimes even becoming necessary. As a result, this paper intends to study how to integrate XA and multimedia to improve the learning performance in computer science, with particular reference to the programming courses. Since computer science is mostly driven by the new applications, XA and multimedia are considered to be effective and efficient to reduce the cognitive efforts by practical demonstration. The experimental results, based on the case study of the operating systems course at the Bachelor’s level, show that exploiting multimedia in XA can significantly improve the learning performance in terms of grade distributions, reliability, knowledge transfer and student satisfaction with respect to more traditional approaches based on frontal lectures. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The present research introduces a deep learning method for automatically recognizing and evaluating tissue areas that correspond to invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) in whole slide images (WSI) of breast cancer (BCa). Learn-from-data techniques which utilize computational simulations of the learning process are called deep learning approaches. It has been demonstrated that these methodologies outperform conventional methods in resolving the challenging issues in a number of domains, particularly object and speech recognition. The main reason why making an invasive breast cancer evaluation is an exhausting and laborious process is that, it necessitates a pathologist to scan a huge number of benign regions with the aim to determine the spots that are malignant. Effectively characterizing IDC in WSI is a prerequisite for evaluating the severity of tumors and predicting patient prognosis. In order to support diagnosis, the DL approach in this study draws out many convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for perceptible semantic examination of tumor locations. A WSI database of 162 patients with IDC diagnoses is exploited to assess the technique, and 170 slides were chosen for training. The objective of the experimental analysis was to assess the accuracy of the classifier in identifying IDC tissue areas in WSI. A fusion of optimization techniques namely Best First and Evolutionary Search has been employed for feature reduction and improvement. When using DenseNet169, our approach produced the highest quantitative outcomes for the computerized identification of IDC sections in WSI with regard to accuracy 87.46% in comparison with an approach using EfficientNetB0 and ML classifiers for invasive tumor categorization employing Random Forest, BayesNet, SVM, Naïve Bayes and Decision Tree with accuracy of 80.65%. © 2024 IEEE.
